VOICE EDITING IN AUDACITY

Hi, I noticed that the volume is very low when I listen to my recording before making adjustments. I usually take out the background noise first and then use Amplify and leave it at the default settings. I have a Marantz MPM-1000 mic and an Audio Solo interface. Where in the order tgat you show, should I add amplify? Another wuestion is: What do I do when potential clients ask to submit the demo without compression? How do I make it sound nice anyway? Thanks. I am struggling with my mic. I am thinking about investing in a Rode mic.
