In this video, I illustrate how to optimize the sound of a recorded voice using only a standard channel EQ (Apple Logic Pro) to get a big, bold, warm, smooth, professional voice sound. This male voice was recorded with the Shure SM7B and was captured directly to a Zoom H6 Recorder. The voice was recorded In a medium-sized, partially treated room, a real-life scenario. Knowing how to properly EQ can optimize the sound of any voice, on any microphone, in any room. You can even make a budget microphone sound much more expensive.

The third band really make a difference. And the rest adjustment make the voice more open, release the beauty of his voice. I can hear it even with my phone speaker. I always excited with EQ-ing, and still need to learn it a lot. Another Great video lenny. Cheeres🙏

Great video you really know your stuff! I would appreciate your opinion since you’re a pro. I feel that the H6 is a good recording option for my self because I’m turning my closet into a sound treated area to start VoiceOver projects and I kind of feel like I can set the simple gain controls And not have to worry about it and record as close to raw audio as I can and save all of my OCD tendencies for postproduction lol I’m finding myself spinning my wheels trying to record with a USB mic into a computer because I’m always trying to mess with the volume either on the audio interface or on the computer and I never feel like I have it set correctly. I tried a rodecaster but the gain settings coupled with having to get the unity gain set with the slider It is driving me nuts. Is an h6 a good option you think?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David, Yes the H6 is a good option. I have one and have quite a few clients who use it. See this video regarding recording levels. It may help kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ2bq6CvbN6hm80. I believe that the slider on the Rodecaster is only output volume. It's completely independent of the recording level. Hope that helps.

@@HeyLennyB it does thank you. One final question…..32 bit float seems like a great option to record to if I went that route but as I learn about DAW’s wouldn’t 32 bit float create more editing in post to get the levels where I want them If that makes sense? I’m thinking just hit -12 on a zoom and roll with it.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, 32 bit floating is tremendously helpful when capturing audio. Great for sources with large dynamic range. Maybe not necessary for voice-over. I use a Sound Devices Mix Pre with 32 bit floating and it's awesome. However, there's no problem when bringing it into my DAW. Audio levels in the 32-bit float WAV file can be adjusted up or down after recording with most major DAW software with no added noise or distortion.

Hi Prishna, I’d be happy to offer my help to get you the sound you’re after. The best thing to do is to submit a sample of your voice so I can hear what you’re working with. Then, I can suggest some things that will help optimize your sound. You can submit your voice on my website. Please look for the red button at the top right of the page, follow the instructions and send your voice at www.lennyb.com. Thanks

Can this software we used in real time broadcasting?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 жыл бұрын
It's possible... but there's better/cheaper ways to get a similar outcome for a live broadcast situation. You might consider using a DBX 286s or other similar mic processor for broadcast. I've done a video on this unit here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4XKXnuwfbmmm8U

Can you explain, why one always has to remove the boxy frequencies from a song voice track recorded with SM7B, I mean 200 Hz? I know, that a pro can make any mic sound good, but I heard that there are microphones that require no EQing, and record perfectly at once. Is that the problem of SM7B?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 жыл бұрын
That's an awesome question! The "boxy" sound usually comes from the room, not the mic. That's why it is often a problem. Unless you have your room professionally treated with Acoustic absorbing panels, all frequencies, especially in the boxy 200Hz range are bouncing around the room and resonate. The room adds that box sound and is captured by your mic. So, in order to balance the signal, EQ us used. Those mics that require "no EQing," hold up if the room is treated. I hope that answers your question.
@yuh9157

so all of the distorted sounding frequency's should be taken out?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake42. No, I'd describe it as lowering the frequency spaces that are over accentuated. You want to find the frequencies that are louder than the rest of the voice and Lower them. Ultimately balancing out the spectrum. Hope that helps.

I have the Shure mic and am having big time trouble getting rid of the sibilance. I use it for singing and the esses are atrocious. So much about the mic is warm and inviting but the sibilance ruins everything. When I saw you raising the high end i got very nervous. Any suggestions? Would taking your course address this for singing?

Hi JOSHURLIVE, I see that the GOXLR mixer has "EQ, compression, de-essing and gating controls make your voice sound amazing" according to the product description on their website. I suggest you look into my EQ course (lennyb.com) and learn how to optimize your voice. Your Goxlr has the tools... you just need the know how. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Project B, Sure I can make some suggestions. Can you tell me first about what you want the preamp to do? Is it just to get more level, or do you want a preamp you can drive a little to get some thickness for your sound? There will be more options for inexpensive preamps if you just need a preamp for more level for your SM7B.

I'd recommend the Warm Audio WA73 or the Art Voice Channel. They are both in the $500 to $600 price range. It goes up from there. You might also consider the Presonus Studio Channel, but I've never used one before. I hope that helps. BTW, Sweetwater.com is where I purchase most gear. Call Aaron at Sweetwater.
