The most iconic part of that recording was James Cleveland played that piano, her fathers good friend. James Cleveland went on to be named the father of Gospel. He, Rev Franklin and Mattie Moss all ran in circles. The real church era. Im very young but I love that era of church and recordings and choir teachings as well. Remember when Mattie Moss died and Aretha sang at the funeral.

I watch this recording religiously. It's really the handbook for singers on how to master the art of both technique and rawness. As a huge fan of Sam Cooke (literally the greatest voice to ever exist), I can hear his influence all over her in much of her catalogue, but especially in this recording from the phrasing to the way she lifts off of the end of her notes. And to see Mick Jagger in the back clapping his hands, getting his entire life just makes me feel so proud. It's proof that black music is indeed the blueprint. All of that yelling rockstars like Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, and Joe Cocker did was their attempts to belt and squall like black people. And that's no shade because I'm a fan of all of these artists. But it's just the truth. I'm in such awe of our black legends. Whether they receive all of their flowers or not, what they gave the world can never be duplicated and it'll forever live on. Thanks for reacting to this. Made my soul happy. ❤

You hit the mark about Aretha's singing being powerful but not really heavy. Jennifer Hudson spoke on how a coach told her as she prepared to record Aretha's songs for the movie that one of the primary differences between them were the approach. "Aretha sings from the head, you sing from your feet" she had to learn to approach it differently to be embody Aretha's songs & I think she did that well.

@@kreole7376I don’t think Jennifers voice is balanced. She needs more head, nasal resonance. It would brighten her tone and make her sound prettier. She sounded her best when imitating Aretha because she dropped some weight in the sound and had more resonance in the head to me. Aretha was sooooo flexible and elastic in her voice. Jennifer is like a bodybuilder while Aretha was like a gymnast.

Jaron your analysis of Aretha’s vocal style as”narrative”is what I’ve also concluded many years ago.The influence of her preacher father is evident in her approach, phrasing and ad libs within a song. You also pointed out in this video Aretha rarely belts every note in a song. Even tho the power is there it’s in reserve mode. Most singers in their attempt at an Aretha song will over sing it and miss the soulful subtleties of the recordings. Great channel!

He came there to show love and support for the queen of soul, Love it British artists like Jagger, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and others showed respect and would always tell people they where inspired by Black music artists in America. While Whites in America didn't and stole from Black singers and musicians.

I am not a vocalist by any stretch but I just realized that the commonality among the most revered singers is that they are powerful without being heavy. Aretha, Whitney, Luther. Powerful singers but also very vocally nimble and light on their feet, so to speak. Not sure if that makes any sense as, like I said earlier, I'm just piecing this together. You're comparison between heavy, light and powerful, a good example is Jennifer Holiday vs Aretha Franklin. In my humble opinion. Much love from Trinidad ❤️💕

I remember seeing her in concert and she stop the show because they put the Air conditioner to cold! It was awesome, i guess the cold messes with her voice.
