I think it's silly how people are so obsessed by whether vocalists are using some type of effects on their voice. Esp in metal. You wouldn't be that upset if a guitarist used distortion, or when the orchestral track wasn't produced by an actual on stage orchestra? The voice is another instrument in this mix, and sometimes it needs an extra layer or effect to give it that added power. You re still a skilled musician...

There are a few bootlegs of Jinjer’s performance at Wacken, and it DOES NOT include the back tracking. Her voice is still very rich, especially for the mediocre audio quality of the bootlegs, but the secondary vocals are added in post. On an interview, that you can watch on youtube, Eugene (the bassist) mentions that there's a delay and reverb effect on Taiana's vocals, she also says "I think they mean if I do other stuff to sound like this not the effects on the general voice sound" and she then proceeds to explain that it is through technique that she actually won't recommend to try without technique and that she developed her sound through time. Once mentioned that, Tatiana doesn't do lipsync. I have seen them live three times, she has the ability that she shows and reach deep and high notes on the range without problem. She does sound less clean when live than this one (you can check videos on their tour and live sessions from fans) but you have to count that his was f*ing Wacken Open Air and that this is actually the clip from the Wacken page which has post production in ALL cases. On concert you can tell there's no backing track with her, just the regular delay and as nobody does chorus for her (no one else sings in the band) there are some phrases added but not the whole song.
@RitualBlood5 жыл бұрын
She's not doing false chords (the cookie monster sound) She's actually doing a fry scream, she just has a naturally deep fry. You can tell it's fry scream by the tone of some of it and also because of how long she can scream words without excessive breathing. If she was false chord screaming you have to breathe in air about every 5 words as it requres a lot more air flow.. I recommend looking up "voice hacks" channel on youtube and look for the jinjer video, they have a good way of explaining her vocals.

After seeing them in concert a few days ago.I can't say I recall any of the harmonies I've heard in the video here.The sound was great but not as polished as this video. There wasn't any lipsyncing at the show. You could hear her take breaths and her voice would change a bit with certain movements etc.The switch from clean to growl/fry was seamless. I'm not saying she isn't getting any help from the sound board but just emphasizing that she's the real deal and that her voice is consistently performing at this level. As always I enjoy your videos. Thanks for doing what you do sir.

The intro of the song and the harmonies are taken from the original track. Yes. But the reverb you feel in the microphone is not a "computer effect" is processed inside the actual microphone.

I'm thinking boosted gain in the mic, delay, reverb, could even have a sustainer on it. These days you can get all those effects on a computer but also stomp boxes or rack units. pretty sure the harmonies are coming from a backing track. They've got ear pieces in and I'm sure they're playing to a metronome so when the backing tracks sync perfectly. Complex bands do that a lot. Nightwish has some videos where the sound guys show you whats happening behind the scenes like effects, backing tracks, its all mapped out on the computer through logic or pro tools.
@Module79L5 жыл бұрын
It's no secret that Jinjer use backing tracks, you can hear them in their live performances of I Speak Astronomy, Words Of Wisdom or Captain Clock. According to Tatiana in an interview, they use tracks pre-recorded by her and layered under the live mic to achieve that reverb and harmony sound in their songs.

I can tell for this singer, along with Alissa White-Gluz and Angela Gossow. They don't hurt (or -didn't hurt-, since Angela doesn't sing anymore) their voices in any way by screaming. Arch Enemy goes on touring for months with 20, 30 gigs, several of them in consecutive days and the singer is just fine. Healthy screaming doesn't damage the voice at all when doing properly and it can be done in the long term like any other kind of singing.
@kenny2404 жыл бұрын
I’m glad to see someone who understands how difficult it is to make some of these sounds, and how they’re made. One of the reasons Tatiana can switch back and forth between the cleans and screams so quickly and “effortlessly”, is due to the relaxation that was pointed out in the beginning. Tension tends to lead more towards a standard fry-scream, which can be harmful. But she’s using false chords/folds to get the distortion in a relaxed, easy manner. I know she has said she hurts her voice sometimes, but in general, it’s gotta be relatively healthy if she can still do it daily 10 years down the road.

Like VarjoMedia said, LOTS of compression, delay and verb for thickness. If they were adding backing growls she'd have a hard time matching the tone and you'd be able to tell there were two distinct voices overlapping. Also, the mic cupping introduces extra gain/mid focus, while simulating a bit of low and high pass filtering for that lo fi radio tone. She does layer her screams for emphasis on the albums, but mostly in a stereo low guttural style to get that extra meanness under a part for dramatic effect/eeeveelness. Otherwise, she's the frickin goods. One of the most savage out there.

There are Vocal Harmonizer effects available, but they don't usually sound very natural. So I'm guessing they are playing with some backing tracks, but I do not think she is "correcting" her live vocals, just adding some reverb/delay, and maybe some compression and limiting to level out the volume. Her pitch is a little off here and there, but that's okay, it sounds real.

It's a post produced recording, there is a video on youtube with Bass player of Jinjer he is talking about how they are doing this, and yes they play with a backing track, thats why you hear more than one voice in some places.

Jinjer's bassist told that they have some kind of hidden track with octave difference. And Tatiana is singing along with it, but with octave difference, if i understood correctly. It's basically useless to link the interview cause it's on Russian, but if you're interested check Hellscream academy's channel for interview. Upd: Just looked in comments, and i suppose it's called harmony vocals

To your question Sam: There are live harmony generators that are very good, but AFAIK the software involved must be told the key of the song, and probably the chord as well (as far as I know, either you feed audio from a keyboard for example, and it makes it's best guess, or it'd have to be programmed say, to the tempo map/click track of the song), but I really don't think they're quite on the level of how those harmonies sounded, someday haha, but they definitely sounded like backing tracks to me. Plus all the other effects going on that you mentioned. Autotune Live is getting so good, and backing tracks so acceptable currently (especially with modern metal bands), when I see a metal/rock performance like this, I can be pretty certain that there was a lot of both going on here. It was just too perfect to me, even besides the obvious harmonies. I'm all for it, makes for a great show, which is the entire point of course.

I just got back from seeing Jinjer live in Dallas, and they for sure use some backing tracks from their studio recordings (such as the opening dialogue from Perennial), but it's definitely not lip-syncing and I doubt sincerely that there's anybody off-stage doing any of the screaming/singing as some claim.

There is 3 ways. One effect called doubled .other is harmonizer . And the 3rd is 2nd voice recorded. But jinger uses her effects by plugins connected by midi. So when the track reaches that time. The doubled and harmonized switchs on. You can do the same for guitar so I dont have to do tap dancing with the effects pedals. For the voice even the live voice 3 rack does this . Fyi

7:40 100% this, more people need to hear this also, they're just playing to a click track thats synced to the studio recording so they can insert a backing vocal track so she can harmonize over it. Bands do this all the time especially when there's more guitar parts than can be played live or vocal harmonies. But in metal, lip syncing is hugely frowned upon so it'd be incredibly rare to see someone doing it.
@johnfish82083 жыл бұрын
Yes pitch shifters doublers can do that but they do use tracks for timing and ti add in some harmonies
@FHB715 жыл бұрын
There is definitely an additional track, you can hear it in the beginning when she turns to drummer and fixes her hair, there is a prelude playing before the song actually starts.
