I saw Jinjer live two days ago. The harmony vocals were added in post production. They are not used live. The only effects used are the same that every singer has live and in the studio. Compression and some reverb/delay. Tatiana is extremely talented. That's all her.She doesn't need nor use any electronic help for her growls/screams or singing.

Here is a bootleg vid of the same performance reacted to by Sam.Guess what? No backing vocal tracks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYi9i6xma9p3absm57s As I said. They were added in post production. Maybe they have used backing vocal tracks in the past. Dunno. I just haven't heard them in any live vid I've seen.There certainly were not any backing vocal tracks at the Jinjer show I saw a few days ago. Peace.

@@gtrsean2429 It's a band's choice to use them or not. For some venues it would be way easier to mess the mix if there are problems with the acoustics, and it's a PITA to level the volume.

My comments were about the performance of Perennial reacted to by Sam. I proved my comments to be true buy posting the same performance filmed/recorded from a fan. It "did not" have the backing vocals. The backing vocals in that vid were added later in post production. That's all.This isn't a debate if backing tracked vocals are cool or not cool to use live. : )

This! I couldn’t figure out how to phrase this in my comment but effortless is the right word! That’s how I feel with my harsh vocals now. They come out so easy and I could do that super loud all day without fatiguing my voice whereas I feel trying to belt just as long with be exhausting. It’s definitely a lot more effortless once you’re used to doing harsh vocals.

Probably because the way the song is structured between screams and cleans, it breaks up the monotony of the extreme music. Makes hardcore music more accessible to the mainstream. Jinjers unique song structures are what really make them shine.

I think it's silly how people are so obsessed by whether vocalists are using some type of effects on their voice. Esp in metal. You wouldn't be that upset if a guitarist used distortion, or when the orchestral track wasn't produced by an actual on stage orchestra? The voice is another instrument in this mix, and sometimes it needs an extra layer or effect to give it that added power. You re still a skilled musician...
@alexstroud3615
@alexstroud3615 4 жыл бұрын
I thought it was only effects that change the pitch of voices that people hate/think is cheating. I've never heard people moaning about the standard delay/reverb that is added to virtually every singer in virtually every genre of live music.

you're very right. the false folds are twice the size of your glottal folds. women can get down really low with false fold sounds like this. and a common misnomer is that a false cord scream uses the false folds while a vocla fry doesn't...but no both resonate the false folds the fry just has more true or glottal cord involvement...this is why in fry screams you get cool overtones because two different folds are both resonating. it's how tuvan style singing works as well.
@RitualBlood
@RitualBlood 4 жыл бұрын
She's not doing false chords (the cookie monster sound) She's actually doing a fry scream, she just has a naturally deep fry. You can tell it's fry scream by the tone of some of it and also because of how long she can scream words without excessive breathing. If she was false chord screaming you have to breathe in air about every 5 words as it requres a lot more air flow.. I recommend looking up "voice hacks" channel on youtube and look for the jinjer video, they have a good way of explaining her vocals.

On an interview, that you can watch on youtube, Eugene (the bassist) mentions that there's a delay and reverb effect on Taiana's vocals, she also says "I think they mean if I do other stuff to sound like this not the effects on the general voice sound" and she then proceeds to explain that it is through technique that she actually won't recommend to try without technique and that she developed her sound through time. Once mentioned that, Tatiana doesn't do lipsync. I have seen them live three times, she has the ability that she shows and reach deep and high notes on the range without problem. She does sound less clean when live than this one (you can check videos on their tour and live sessions from fans) but you have to count that his was f*ing Wacken Open Air and that this is actually the clip from the Wacken page which has post production in ALL cases. On concert you can tell there's no backing track with her, just the regular delay and as nobody does chorus for her (no one else sings in the band) there are some phrases added but not the whole song.

I'm thinking boosted gain in the mic, delay, reverb, could even have a sustainer on it. These days you can get all those effects on a computer but also stomp boxes or rack units. pretty sure the harmonies are coming from a backing track. They've got ear pieces in and I'm sure they're playing to a metronome so when the backing tracks sync perfectly. Complex bands do that a lot. Nightwish has some videos where the sound guys show you whats happening behind the scenes like effects, backing tracks, its all mapped out on the computer through logic or pro tools.
@Module79L

It's no secret that Jinjer use backing tracks, you can hear them in their live performances of I Speak Astronomy, Words Of Wisdom or Captain Clock. Vlad has a laptop right beside him for a reason. : ) But they never use vocal backing tracks live. In this case the vocal harmonies were added in post, they're not present in the "raw" live recording of this concert.

She’s probably always warm, besides first thing in the morning. If you’re a singer/vocalist at the top of your game in one of the most complex genres of music you sing every single day, she’s probably always practicing. How else will you get better at that point in your career?

Yes, there are good octave effects available. I like your point, Sam, about not directly comparing a polished presentation of a refined composition to a raw [vocal] performance. I think that many people, each with their own immense potential, can be discouraged from singing as much as they would like to... simply by failing to consistently recognize the fact of audible differences between a professionally produced piece of music ... and a non-engineered, natural voice. I love your videos! I just watched your "laryngoscopy" video (7 days in the future! XD), and suddenly *everything* you've said makes *so much more sense!* Needless to say, I've never understood vocal anatomy as much as I've wanted to, which has been a frustration to my interest in sound. Keep up the good work.

After seeing them in concert a few days ago.I can't say I recall any of the harmonies I've heard in the video here.The sound was great but not as polished as this video. There wasn't any lipsyncing at the show. You could hear her take breaths and her voice would change a bit with certain movements etc.The switch from clean to growl/fry was seamless. I'm not saying she isn't getting any help from the sound board but just emphasizing that she's the real deal and that her voice is consistently performing at this level. As always I enjoy your videos. Thanks for doing what you do sir.

I really love that you react to different genres! And your explanations are so easy to understand even for people who don't know much about singing. After one of your videos I always want to learn how to sing properly. 😄 I know there are a lot of requests under your videos. I hope you forgive me for another one.😅 Could you please react to one of Shinedown's Live Room sessions? They are my absolute favorite band and I'm really curious what you have to say about Brent's vocals. No problem, if you don't. I'll happily watch other videos too, because you're making them so informative 😊

Sam I completely agree, I enjoy when the band uses everything at their disposal, making the show sound great (including effects). Jinjer is a super technical band, overall. Love your videos! Learning extreme vocals right now and this helps me understand a lot more about Tatiana. They said in a video that I watched before this one that they use a slight delay. So basically doubling her live. When they blew up this last few years the effects crept in more and more... I love it though. I saw her live in Edmonton, they were great!

The harmonies that sound when she sings the clean parts are pre-recorded, but she sings the "main" voice live.

I think your vocal reactions are by far the best in KZbin. While other channels just react like "oh that's cool...", you add so much useful information and nuisance for every phrase the vocalist sings. Keep it up!

I do know that what you hear from her out front is in her ear just the same.(worked the show in San Antonio, her sound engineer handles all mixes with iPad) So picture having that mix coming thru your ear. She gets pumped knowing that she is getting some awesome reinforcement for what she is doing. You nailed your observation!

I’m glad to see someone who understands how difficult it is to make some of these sounds, and how they’re made. One of the reasons Tatiana can switch back and forth between the cleans and screams so quickly and “effortlessly”, is due to the relaxation that was pointed out in the beginning. Tension tends to lead more towards a standard fry-scream, which can be harmful. But she’s using false chords/folds to get the distortion in a relaxed, easy manner. I know she has said she hurts her voice sometimes, but in general, it’s gotta be relatively healthy if she can still do it daily 10 years down the road.
