definitely exhales, there is a lot of power behind his vocals live. surprising to hear his lows aren’t as low as they normally are on this new album (this track at least). he also sticks his tongue out when he does highs, i think it helps him to get those higher shrill screams that sound inhuman. didn’t hear any of that on this track though.

Not a metal vocalist but still an idea to cover: Jeff Smith from Jeromes Dream? He basically just does punk yelling with megaphone distortion on their later material, but the early stuff (up to their split with Orchid, Seeing Means More Than Safety is the classic) features these really horrific high pitched wails. What the hell is going on there? Sounds like a guy dying, but still oddly melodic, so it's definitely not the same uncontrolled shriek from the lungs that I've managed.
@billyalarie929 Жыл бұрын
In the same vein (to an astonishing degree actually)-though very much more along the extreme side of things (metal is just the start of the conversation)-The Body would be maybe a slightly more appropriate one to get into, especially if she’s looking to do, like I said and like this video suggests, something more along the lines of metal.
@charmicarmicat29814 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this video. Dylan has a voice like no other; it’s very unique to my ears. In an endless sea of death and grind where all vocalists sound the same to me, I can pick his out easily

I found out early on that it is not supposed to hurt, fortunately for me i never damaged my voice but i did get smarter about trying this type of vocal. I have a pretty deep speaking voice so i found out i'm more comfortable on the lower end. highs are not for me and i never want to risk a potential bleed. dylan must have great vocal control with how heavy they tour i know I'd be fried!

This guy and the vocalist from Knoll blow my mind. I want to learn those super high pitched screams! I can scream but those are on another level I cant figure out. I also want to learn those vocals that Travis from Cattle Decapitation and dude from Knoll does that have multiple tones at once that sound really inhuman and unholy. I can't find anyone talking about it very much.

I discovered his technique trying to combine black metal highs with singing long before I ever heard his voice
@artilerypheonix5 жыл бұрын
his voice with distortion sounds a lot like max cavalera when he was younger. which is interesting because max started off with more of a false chord like scream and turned it up a notch with the roots album. also, do you think learning voice with distortion is better done by combining pitch with false chord, or fry screaming?

This was so sick to see! Dylan is at the top of the game in heavy vocals hands down. Been really interested on his techniques in the past (particularly his notorious scream in "Vessel Deserted"). I don't believe his skills are inhaled, there's too much depth and force.

I'll go back and check them out, sounds like a style I just worked out recently but I wasn't sure what to call it. Btw I definitely respect that you give so much information, I used to watch videos by another channel but nowadays they seem MUCH more protective of their methods and have some really ridiculous Ts&Cs for their Skype lessons, such a shame. Glad I saw some of their false chord exercises while I had the chance, helped me improve, buuuuut moving on lol. I always wanna get better, so yeah I'll have to watch more of your stuff ^_^

It would be interesting to have a similar analysis of some singers from back then with unique voices - what is e.g. guys like Sting (Police) and Jon Andersson (Yes) really doing to sound the way they do?
@lormill48515 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's fry with false chord layered over it. Like, at the beginning where it was lower in pitch. It's too distortion for it to be voice, I think. I mean, I dunno, but I've been learning how to isolate the false chord, and that carries the sound signature of false chord, but still with the fuzz and compressed feel of fry. But I dunno. Either way, that's one heck of a band. How do I know stuff like Burgerkill but not this? Weird.
