This performance is one of the most badass things I’ve ever seen even including movies. Billy corgan gave us so much!! And I agree about his voice, it’s a very controversial voice but personally I love the sound of his voice and love its uniqueness

Life long SP fan here. I remember hearing in an interview when Billy was asked about his unorthodox singing. He basically said, when I'm on stage, I will MAKE you listen to me.

Haha! That sounds like something he would have said in the 90’s! Thanks for joining in Scott!

Cool pick. Billy Corgan was the reason I started playing guitar. Have you seen that live version of I am one? Insanely powerful.

The first time I saw them live was on this tour, and I was young. And it broke me in such a good way. I always felt that on the records, he had a guitar track that was only there to support his voice, but seeing it and them live, I realized he treated his voice like a guitar. Great stuff. Great commentary.

Great point about the importance of emoting through the vocals. Although it can be overdone if it gets too unrelentingly emo, and that's why Billy's sort of punk attitude, vacillating without warning between vulnerable, apathetic, grating, playful, and pure rage provides a steady stream of contrasts that makes each emotion really pop. Often, American Idol-type singers, as gifted as they may be, will have this sort of carefully curated affectation that just comes off mechanical, if not outright phony. From a singing perspective, no one ever accused Billy of not being original! Not many have a false chord like him, either, hehe. Lastly, and I know this is kind of obvious because it's true of any musician, but people often overlook it with respect to singers and drummers... The single most important intangible for any great singer is creativity/musicality (and the taste to know how to use it). And original pumpkins-era Billy Corgan was absolutely overflowing with it.

So I've been an SP fan my whole life. And a couple years ago I started an SP tribute band. I was mostly worried about trying to emulate Corgan's guitar playing, because he's a much better player than I am. What I did not anticipate was how difficult it would be to sing like Billy. As you described here in your vid, the man was a damn animal. So difficult to do what he does.
@simplysinging5115 Жыл бұрын
Very cool you started a tribute band! I believe to sing like Billy, you have to hold true and deep emotional pain. Thanks you joining the convo!

XYU was such a great choice! I saw them in San Jose in ‘96. Right before starting the song, Billy said, “Young ones cover your ears, we’re about to hurt you!” And proceeded to play the hell out of this song 🤘🏼 By the way, i think I have this whole concert on VHS somewhere 😁 Dusseldorf, Germany, right?

Hi! There is a radio interview D'arcy gave a few years ago saying that Billy is the only person she knows that can sing two tones at once. Is there any SP songs where he shows this particular ability? Thank you so much!
@simplysinging51152 жыл бұрын
That is fantastic! I am not sure if there is any performance that I can recall where he sings two tones at once, but the original recording of XYU from the album has some pretty crazy vocals tones in it! Axl Rose also has the ability to sing two tones at once!

I'm a huge Pumpkins fan. Billy has a beautifully expressive voice in all its nasal, breathy, high-pitch grandeur. It either resonates with you or it doesn't. Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston are surely better technical singers if you're only interested in soulless vocal gymnastics😊

Very well said! I will stand with emotional delivery over technical ability any day!

I remember hearing him sing on the radio when I was 6 years old and I thought to myself “he is so cool, I want to sing just like him.” As a 6 year old knowing nothing about singing, I realized it was his intensity and his attitude that made me attracted to him as a singer. That’s exactly the same thing that attracts me to singers today even more than vocal ability!
@scottshingleton76592 жыл бұрын
@@simplysinging5115 There are a lot of singers that arent good singers but their songs were great and they were great at what they did. Take Ozzy Osbourne for example, his voice isn't and wasn't that good but his songs are good and he is good at singing those songs. Same with Fred Durst, Dave Pirner, Mark Mc Grath, Axel Rose, The lead singer of Smash Mouth, and the lead singer of AC/DC.

@@scottshingleton7659 I completely agree with you! Thank you for those other awesome examples!

@@simplysinging5115 I can also say the same about my own singing, my voice is nothing special, just average but it enables me to cover the songs by Smash Mouth, Limp Bizkit, Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, and even though I've never covered any Guns n Roses songs or Sugur Ray songs, they are definitely in my vocal range. Of course I can't sound exactly like those artists but my voice still fits those songs. I can't do AC/DC though. I'd probably kill my voice trying and I'd say I can probably sing Sugur Ray better than Mc Grath as his voice is kinda bland. I haven't tried any Ozzy yet and his voice is so distinctive I don't think anyone can emulate it.
@simplysinging51152 жыл бұрын
@@scottshingleton7659 I bet you are great man! It’s interesting, I once saw mark McGrath sing a Sex Pistols song and his voice and performance on that song blew me away! It showed me that he is a far better singer than what sugar ray required of him. Although if he sang any different in sugar ray than he did on the recordings, they probably wouldn’t have made the impact they did! It’s all about the vibe and how the story is delivered within the song!
