I can't believe I am actually learning anything about singing by listening to people sing and then listening to Sam. smh...crazy right?
@janetsbridgeofsighs89746 жыл бұрын
Michael Terrell I just told someone that same thing today! Only real criticism he ever gave was against the judges and they deserved it for laughing and hurting those poor people who singing probably meant so much to. Only thing it reminded me of was when I worked in a law firm and one of the attorneys wanted nothing more than to be a professional baseball player, but he couldn't swing a bat, hit a ball or catch one either. He knew stats on all the players and watched all the games, but it actually pained him that he couldn't even play ball in school much less the majors. You could see it in his face sometimes when he talked about baseball and he was a lawyer for goodness sake. He would have given that up to be a ball player. But you can't be an ok player in the majors. That is why I stopped watching American Idol during season 2 because the judges didn't care about helping them be better only about stepping on their necks so they couldn't articulate sounds. I saw their pain and it reminded me of his. Now I pop on KZbin and look for golden buzzers or things like that so I don't see the pain. I don't mind a fair competition. When they have the finals or top 5 when you know it can be anyone and most will find some kind of job in their field. But not in the beginning when they are just tearing their hearts out and letting them die before their very eyes.

I think he's compressing and holding back at times due to the acoustic nature of the song. Usually in the full versions he would just let go and open up, but he seems to be holding back to fit the acoustic guitar and keep the vocals quieter/at a lower octave. The song is also slower than usual so he may be compressing a bit to compensate for that - maybe it's a way of slowing his brain/making it a more comfortable way of singing it slower?
@SamJohnsonVoice6 жыл бұрын
Totally fair! Not singing with the full instrumentation definitely changes how people sing the whole piece. I don't think he needed to change the technique as much as he did then.

Could the extra compression be a way for him to make things feel a bit more 'urgent' and thereby get a slightly different style in his vocals that might be harder for him to get if he were more relaxed? But, I have to say, this was not the original version of the song (acoustic) hence he is singing more into the emotion rather than technique (though I get what you were trying to say). Hope you can do one for their performance on The Voice with Cassadee Pope - the song was Here with Me. Great job as always!

4:27 youre definitely right about the stylistic choice. i love how you temper your expert opinion by acknowledging the artistic discretion

I think it's great that coaches like you exist. The artist knows the sound and style they want, and you all you want to do is help them to do it. You don't want to change their unique sound, you want to make it healthier, easier and more sustainable of a sound. The small nit picks might not mean anything to the end user like you said, but the artist will for sure thank you at the end of a tour when they're not hoarse and have laryngitis cause they didn't have someone to help them.

I remember the morning listening to this in the car when kroq aired it live and thought Brandon sounded great, and was really excited he sang this and jenny was a friend of mine

Sam! great video as always. I was wondering if you had a fix for someone's voice "kermiting" as they go higher and more nasal? It happens to me a lot and I'm not sure how to rid myself of it

Would you ever be willing to explain how to do a healthy whistle-tone? (What your vocal chords are doing, because they don't vibrate at that register- where your tongue should be and how much breath.)

I really liked your critique of Brandon's voice. This is a performance that is over 3 years ago. I believe is voice is stronger now after The Killers Wonderful Wonderful tour, in person he is stunning. Enjoyed this lots Sam!!
