Freddie said in an interview that a concert is supposed to be different singing tones and if people want to here the albums, they can listen to them at home that’s what makes concerts so great. You don’t get the soundtrack, you get the live version.

Almost 100% definite. He put so much energy and passion into his live performances that he probably couldn't hit every note. His live singing was never perfect but it sure hit you right through the heart......an incredible performer.

@@stockdam I've read that early in Queen's career, he'd give every night everything he had, and blow out his voice by the end of a tour. I guess that he learned how to dial it back just enough to keep his voice going for an entire tour without too much damage, and part of that was skipping some of the really high falsettos.

Besides his vocal nodules, and his, to put it kindly, not-the-most-healthy lifestyle, Freddie also couldn't take great care of his voice in general. For a span of roughly 15 years, Queen was going nonstop from studio to touring and back to studio, giving him very little time to rest the vocal chords. Of course, he did the best that he possibly could, but often cutting back on the high notes and other vocally strenuous parts of songs were necessary in order to preserve his voice down the line. Over time, he experimented with lots of different vocal techniques in order to make up for it, which is big part of how he had such a massive range (in tone). With regards to Freddie's general avoidance (there are plenty of exceptions, don't worry) of falsetto and other softer and quieter sounds in his live performances, you also have to consider the time period. There was no in-ear pieces to help singers hear themselves, and the sound systems live weren't amazing. In order to be clearly heard through all the rest of the instruments, especially in rock, you had sing as loud and as powerfully as you could muster. Which is why in concert we sadly rarely heard Freddie's falsetto, or just his delicate angelic tone he used often on record (at least in the 70s).

I think the reason he had such an amazing performance despite being unwell was because he was singing as if there is no tomorrow. because he knew there wasn't. to me there is something so tragic and heroic and I guess the word I am looking for is beautiful. As an artist myself I can't help be see the poetry just in his complete surrender of himself to his art. many of us will reach for this, some even will achieve it. but the stakes, the passion and the power of that moment, to me, makes it some of the greatest art in history.

since 1985 more less Freddie started to be affected by throat issues in his vocals like laringitis . I think that AIDS was actually affecting him in his singing . In Magic Tour 86 , their last tour, the people who was around him said he wasn,t fine , something wrong happened with him . For me the best live Freddie was from 1980 to 1983. In Live Aid he already had problems but he was so big , so profesional that he really did his best live performance of his career . Excuse me please for my english . I remember seeing an interview with Freddie & the boys where Freddie specifically said that he likes to perform songs differently at concerts than what is recorded. He felt that if they did everything the same way as they did on the albums, people would find them boring, so he always liked to improvise & shake things up a little while on tour. Queen is & has been many things throughout the years, but boring has never been one of them!!! :) They certainly did things their way, and created a whole different sound for the rock world. All of the Queen band members worked their tails off during their "coming of age" time as Queen...all of them extremely dedicated & loyal to their art, and I am so thankful that they did this & shared with us their creativity, passion, & dedication.

I enjoyed your take on Freddie's singing so much! I would love to hear your take on the last song he ever recorded. It was, unfortunately, never performed live because he recorded it when he was quite literally near death. In fact, he left the studio before recording the last verse and was never able to return. Eventually, after his death, the final verse was recorded by Brian May. The song is "Mother Love" from the "Made in Heaven" album. It was released four years after Freddie's death. I think his vocals are amazing for a man who could only barely stand on his own. I'm not a singer or a vocal coach but would love to hear what you think. Thank you for your thoughtful video!

I was working and trying to support three children back then. I graduated from high school in 1962. I was always an Elvis fan - we share a January 8 birthday. By the time I was able to get out, I took up ballroom dancing and was more interested in the "real" music from the 40s and 50s which was better for the dancing I was doing. I guess I was always aware of Queen and Freddie and always enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody. I was listening to a talk show host comparing Freddie with Kurt Cobain; and he preferred Kurt. That got me interested, and I started watching everything Freddie and Queen on youtube. So interested in that I never got to check out the other guy.

I have re discovered Queen last December when I saw the movie, of course I knew who Queen was but never get to hear all their songs and after the movie the first thing I did was watching Queen's Live Aid performance. That night I fell in love with the band, with Freddie and I bought the Wemblay concert dvd, the Montreal show dvd and Queen live at the rainbow. My friends and family thinks I am going slightly mad, I am just in love. It is never to late to discover how magnificent this band was.

Hi, I have not yet seen the movie but planning to, and will scout around for CDs. The live shows are definitely the best, watching them perform is much more exciting than just hearing. One of my best Freddie moments is when he sings out phrases to the audience and the sing back to him. Have you seen Freddie with Monserrat Caballe, the opera singer. course I love the song Barcelona, but The Golden Boy is particularly fabulous, as is his duet on How Can I Go On. Clearly she and Freddie have a very special bond, and her joy shows all over her face. I am also fascinated with the 1976 live show where he sings You Take My Breath Away.

As a life-long fan of Freddie, to answer your question, it's mainly because bohemian rhapsody would always go on late or at the end of the shows. So, his voice was already strained by that time (normally about 2 hours into the show) and that's why he didn't do the falsetto all that often. Often times leaving the higher notes to Roger.

At the soundcheck, the sound tech used to ask how Freddie's voice was on that day. On good days, Freddie did the high notes himself (belting, most of the time, rarely falsetto). On days with more voice problems, they turned Roger's mike up for the high notes.

Thing is with Freddie, he never really payed attention to his voice when he sang, that explains why live performances are very different from the studio version, he just go with the flow and let the body sing by itself, you notice that in the live aid performance that he's too preoccupied dancing, entertaining the crowd and thinking about what to do next to actually care how he's singing, and that's really the magic and why it's so clean most of the time, he had pure trust in his voice when performing so he was able to do whatever he wanted.

Fantastic as always!! As to your Bohemian Rhapsody question, I believe it was just a stylistic choice on the live performance. They did so many various takes putting together the song and it's possible he had an issue with doing the falsetto live on that part, but I don't really think that's it though.

Being honest about Freddie’s voice is not betraying him, or dismissing his incredible talent. He was untrained, and didn’t treat his vocal chords as carefully as someone trained would have. He was amazing live...but also had many live performances where the voice wasn’t there because of growths on his vocal chords from pushing it. He himself admitted many times that he was saved in concert by Brian’s, and particularly Roger’s, vocals filling in. He could hit the high notes, absolutely. But to do so for 2+ hours over the length of a concert would have been too much. So, he dropped down and/or gave the notes to Roger, whose natural voice was higher (Roger has a harder time with lower notes).

It’s nice to see someone appreciate Rodgers voice, because he could hit them high notes and sang very well, I mean with Freddy up front it’s hard to over look Rodger and Brian as well John did excellent back up vocals also all four were just so damm good God given talent and passion.
