She earned 12 Grammy Awards during her career. She encompassed a wide range of musical genres, including rock, jazz, country, Spanish classics and won a Tony Award for her singing in the operetta "Pirates of Penzance" in 1980. Arguably one of the most gifted and talented female singers of all time!

Despite her incredible success as a rock 'n' roll performer, she was not afraid to move on. She seemed more afraid to NOT move on. I'm so glad that Linda is still being appreciated for the wonderful artist that she was. Her range of vocal styles throughout her career was so impressive. As a teen in the 1970s I followed her career and eagerly anticipated the release of each next album. Her Stone Pony years, her Nelson Riddle years, her Spanish roots album and her collaborations with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. She truly is an artist to study and soak in for years to come. And that is completely ignoring the fact that she is a stunningly beautiful woman with a commanding stage presence. Do yourself a favor and search out anything you can find on Linda Ronstadt.

@@renetaylor9109 100% agree. I grew up in Tucson in the 50s-60s. I knew her brothers through one of the local bands they were in. She had already left for LA before that and I didn't get to see her perform until she came back one Christmas in the late 60s and she sang at our favorite folk rock club The Minus One. There were SO many great female vocalists from that era and beyond, but I still think Linda, for her range, talent and willingness to do new and sometimes novel things, was the best of all time. That is not to in any way denigrate others like Streisand, Carole King, Roberta Flack, etc., but Linda still, at least for me, stands out as the all-time greatest.

Linda's attitude about doing something totally different was incredible. When record companies told her she can't do this, it will destroy your career she would say I can't NOT do this. @@garyvandecar2580 Right, her second album Silk Purse was what really got her going, on the strength of that song you mention which hit number 25 in October 1970. For the concurrent tour, she hired Don Henley and Glenn Frey in her band; those two, along with Bernie Leadon (The Flying Burrito Brothers) and Randy Meisner (Poco), would form the first Eagles lineup. The fully-formed Eagles only toured with Ronstadt once prior to recording their debut album, on July 15, 1971 at Disneyland Park; after establishing themselves as a fully-fledged outfit with their first three albums, they guested behind her again in 1974 during her Don't Cry Now tour, and Henley and Frey (along with future Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit) would also appear on her final Capitol release, Heart Like a Wheel, on the James Taylor-penned closing track "You Can Close Your Eyes."

I agree. you don't need to swing up and down, left and right in one sentence. I don't care that you can throw your voice like a roller coaster, except maybe if you're Minnie Riperton, but she's her own person doing what she does so well. Most do it to make the scene because it seems we need women to sing from alto to soprano while shouting. If you can't see the tonsils, you're not going to make it. Linda Ronstadt always made it seem so effortless. She never ever sounded as if she was straining for a note, even when she was belting it out. One of the most endearing qualities of Linda's voice is that she uses it as in instrument, not a bazooka. Compare her recording of I Will Always Love You to Whitney Houston’s. Houston’s approach is all over the top bravura screaming. Ronstadt’s has emotional range. It’s not all sung at the top of her lungs. She has the power when she needs it, but she doesn’t hammer you with it all the time the way Houston does. She uses her voice in service to the song rather than using the song to show off her voice. That’s artistry.

I’ve read her musical autobiography and seen her documentary and have a whole new appreciation for what went into Linda Ronstadt’s instrument and what went into nurturing it in order to create the end heavenly result. 😇

For me, the greatest thing about the Divine Ms. Ronstadt is her intelligence. It shines through in all of her performances. And she always sang in service of the song--not to show off her great vocal chops, but to convey the mood and meaning of the song.

I adore Linda Ronstadt , I think she is in my humble opinion the greatest female vocalist of them all,a master of the art ,the phrasing , the power . I love the enthusiasm of this lady breaking down all the nuances and the skill of Linda's performances of the different songs. Desperado live by Linda, what I would give to have been in the audience at that time, just to hear her hit that high note at the end of " you better let somebody love you , and hear the gasps from the audience ! But can I say , the songs and performances when she appeared on the Muppet show are some of the best of her career . Blue Bayou is wonderful , Roy Orbison said once Linda recorded it ,it was no longer his song, it belonged to Linda . As good as that was , my favourite performance of Linda on the Muppet show was " When iGrow too old to Dream" , the duet with Kermit ,plus the Muppets " Ensemble" backing them and joining in is , I think , the nicest piece of music on KZbin. Linda said about this song " I have sang that song thousands of times over the years , but I have never sang it better than on that show ". I would love this lovely lady ,the vocal coach, to play that clip and interpret the performance ( I'm sorry, I didn't notice your name ,please accept my apologies )

Thank you so much for this. Linda had such a unique voice early in her career, and it just got better as she matured. I lost track of her after the 70s, and it wasn't until the late 90s that I rediscover her when she did the standards with Nelson Riddle. I just fell in love with her all over again. Just brings me to tears when I hear her. There was nothing, absolutely nothing she could not do vocally. I for one miss her like a limb.

I can't remember anyone having a voice quite like her with it being so sweet and mellow with and with a range that bring out a powerhouse. With "Different Drum" which was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees, but she made it her own. She even gave her band a break, a little group known as the Eagles. I remember my baby sister dancing with my grandfather to "Blue Bayou" with her standing on his shoes.

Saw her live in the 1970s. It was an outdoor concert, and a bug flew up her nose. She waved her band to a stop, held up one finger, walked off stage, and the band played a jam until she came back a minute or two later. "Sorry, folks, I got a bug up my nose and I had to get it out." She restarted the song and carried on as if nothing had happened. She was just so down to earth in every way. I wish I had seen her with the Stone Ponys at the Troubadour in L.A. back in the day... SO MANY great musicians from the Laurel Canyon/L.A. scene got their starts there. I was a country radio announcer in 1977-'79. We played a LOT of Linda's crossover songs. She was a true chameleon of talent. I preferred her rock/pop hits, but was amazed at her operatic pursuits. She was the consummate pro and is still an amazing lady.

Red Rocks 1977. After her second encore we thought she was done and we were exiting. The crowd went wild as she came out for a 3rd encore I Cut back into the amphitheater from the stairs. Amazingly I found myself between the crowd barrier and the stage. Just me about 15 or 20 feet in front of her . She actually looked right at me and kind of smiled. Then she sang Desperado. A moment I will never forget.. I had gotten married to the love of my life a couple of months before and she could have stolen me from my wife. I was completely and totally smitten with her. Stuff like that doesn't happen to regular guys like me. If standing alone in front of Linda singing deperado doesn't make you melt... you are not human.

Young Lady, you just made my day. Linda is my favorite vocalist of all time. A wonderful voice and a master of the vocal belt, yet able to sing low and soft as well as go into a more classical head voice when called for. She was in my opinion the most versatile singer of my generation. Oh, yeah, I'm 69 years old. I guess that's why today I'm so in love with Floor Jansen because I see so many of Linda's vocal qualities in her and she also has that devil may care attitude when it comes to trying out other genres of music and doing what to others would seem too impossible or too risky for their careers, Linda will always be my favorite and Floor is right up there with her to me. I just listened to Linda's "Faithless Love" and it's still as current in my mind as it was back in the mid 70's. Oh, and yes I have over 20 of her albums on vinyl so I really am a fan...I miss the sound of her voice...

She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). Like yourself, I could listen to Linda all day though, despite her immense talent, it seems as if she is mostly overlooked amidst the broad array of reactors out there, including most of the other vocal coaches. Perhaps this is because most reactors and KZbinrs who submit requests to those like yourself are too young and unaware of Linda’s vast and varied body of work and tremendous talent. With this in mind, I think that it would be great if some of your contemporaries would consider following your lead and, from time to time, post a video including any one of the many talented artists (especially those of the past) whose talent has impressed them. I "ALWAYS" admired Linda Ronstadt for her beautiful voice and the versatilty to accomplished so many works in music from rock, jazz, operetta, and Spanish Songs of her Fathers. It helps to know that she did this without even recognizing the possible future will cut her short of her singing. It saddens me because with Parkinson's Disease - there is no cure and now with further health issues - I am glad she was able to complete all those goals of hers to do what she does best and that is to sing to her hearts content music of all genres to look back with happiness. She gave us so much of herself and wished with all my heart that she never had Parkinson's Disease because it must be heart-breaking to realize her singing is not possible anymore. However, we are glad she gave us so much of her talented voice and provided a lot to the public audience to still be able to hear her music throughout the years due to technology in maintaining her music for us to remember her always.

Absolutely loveher voice!!! Tripped on her real talent range watching an Eagles documentary and it's wild being an huge fan of them leading me being a bigger fan of Linda's!! Growing up with Sinatra, 40s musicals, and other classics from my parent's musical tastes growing up I realize that her talent is great with pop but her wider talent is displayed in the quality of the Nelson Riddle classics repertoire to show her real range and capabilities. Thank god she recorded the classics and history will rank her as one of the all time greats!!! Wow The operetta was amazing you showed here and the Mexican heritage she recorded late in her career. Holy cow.....Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, great singers.... Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga singers of today that are supposedly great.... Id like to see them try those sustained notes with such vocal strength. Not a chance any of them could compete with Linda. They say in concert, Linda's voice would just project so strongly....what a beautiful voice and a forceful one. Gotta love her!! So sad when she had to retire...but I thank her for her devotion to signing and the videos of her live displaying her incredible talent will preserve her voice forever!!!
