You pronounced Māori great. Polynesian languages are vowel dominant; each syllable is either just vowels, or a consonant followed by vowels so you don't get consonant clusters like English. As a result you get deep, open sounds more than the sharper 'brighter' sounds from the front of the mouth. Stan's cover of Ultralight Beam is amazing btw.

Stan Walker has been a New Zealand treasure that all of us kiwis have been proud of ever since he won the 2009 Australia idol competition. He will forever be one of New Zealand’s biggest artists. Not only a voice to be proud of but a story to be proud of as Stan lived a very hard life and made the best of it even while fighting life threatening illnesses

As a Māori what makes Stan Walker and the Levites so powerful in this rendition of this particular song is because it comes from an indigenous person reminding his own people that it isn’t over! And other people of influence may try to build barriers between our people and success and education and true freedom but as a people must never stop fighting for equality for our children. Like he says in the very last words it is not over. Love you Stan I have heard this version over 100 times but every time I hear it my eyes start sweating. 🥺 and ma’am thank you for your insights and your emotion and connection to his beautiful music. I love your critique of this performance. I speak Māori and English fluently, and the two key sounds in Māori that you don't hear in English are the rolled 'r' and the 'ng' sound, which sound like the end part of the word 'running'. The vowels are also different to English, but I can't quite describe it in writing. LOL. By the way, your pronunciation of the word 'Māori' is very good. Keep smiling. :)

Awesome reaction to stans voice. He's been through alot over the years. In 2009 he came over to Australia from new zealand and auditioned for Australian idol. Where he won. And over the years he's brang many songs and I think 5 or 6 albums now. In 2017 he went through cancer that's been handed down thru his genetic genes. His grandfather in the late 90s went to England to have his cancer removed and I think he died during his operation and it was all on English tv at the time. Stan had his stomach removed and was nervous that he may die like his grandfather who went through the same cancer treatment. But Stan pulled through it and also had to find his voice again. Few months after his surgery he was back singing and been singing ever since. He also got the approval from Sir Elton John to sing his song circle of life on lion king in Maori. In every other country that showed lion king in their native language, the actual song is sung by Sir Elton John himself. Stan Walker is the only one that's allowed to sing his song all around the world the lion king was shown in. His story is very touching and in order to know about his back ground you need to look at his time on Australian idol to his songs that he makes and his cancer scare to now just releasing a new album be made in New Zealand and Australia. You can find stans cancer journey on KZbin along with his Australian idol audition and songs etc. But also if you would like to hear another Polynesian sing. Her name is celestial utai. She is Samoan and from Australia. She has done a Korean song with her brother junez. It is Junez x celestial = Saldaga. Celestial utai also auditioned for the voice Australia 2022. Also there is another Samoan and her name is faith sosene And a male singer called Jordan Tavita. I think you'd love their runs and riffs. All the best and hope to see you do more Maori and Pacific islands Polynesian singers. Be happy to recommend and fill you in with any voice you'd like to hear and react to from Maoris to Polynesians. Much love from Australia.

Thx for introducing me to more great artists, Bethany! I've loved this song since I first heard it on the radio. Neil Finn of Crowded House has that great cut to his high tenor, which I'll guess is due to some forward placement and a bit of nasality. Stan Walker here takes a more ethereal approach with a softer sound that really eases one's heart. The Levites provide a perfect accompaniment. That guitar player, though! Tremendous!
