this song isn’t really a duet, it’s wheein’s song. she definitely adjusted her voice for him and to be honest, i don’t mind it. i do see and hear her hold back as well in this performance though. but since wheein barely does solo activities, i’m just excited to have this performance. i think she’s definitely adjusting more to being a solo artist but i’m glad she’s being included more in events since her signing with a new agency.

if you want a song where she doesn't use breathy vocals and sings with fuller voice i recommend the song Short Hair in Duet Music Festival from 2015. Wheein and her partner won, and this is 1 year after Mamamoo debut. another song i'll recommend is MAMAMOO WHEEIN (Half Moon) - Who's Your Mama (King Of Masked Singer). she also use fuller voice + raps a verse, She Was Pretty(also from Duet Music Festival), and her solo Butterfly. Wheein is known for her breathy and r&b vocals. no one can touch her in r&b vocals in Kpop(her solo 25 and Candy cover are her best). from all the Kpop idols, Wheein is the only kpop idol in Korea's top 5 singers. Solar(leader of Mamamoo) said about Wheein's voice: "her voice gives you the feeling of being healed". she is one of the top singers that other singers want to feat/colab with. from the members of Mamamoo she has the most feats/colabs. Park Bom from the biggest female Kpop group : 2ne1(pronounced as 21) made a song as her solo and she changed the song just to have Wheein as feat in the song. even though Solar has the power vocals with clarity and power, can growl, etc she chose Wheein instead.

And about the breathy quality here some points: 1. In korea they appreciate this kind of quality in slow and atmospheric songs like the song - with my tears- 2. Wheein in mamamoo has almost the rule of being the breathy one and the layed back voice also she does alot of the backing harmonious in their songs 3.the songs that wheein sang it with this style has more acceptance and success from the audience there That's why we don't hear alot of the "full sound singing" from her

This is an old tune that Wheein covered as a solo song for a kdrama OST last year. Surprised that Melia didn't seem to have heard Wheein's breathiness previously. That airy breathiness is her signature style of singing. I think there were two additional things that influenced Wheein's vocal choices - the arc of the song and the song as a conversation. She starts off very soft and tentative and he responds with more confidence, establishing different personalities in both the singing and the relationship. In the final chorus she is singing with more of her full voice as the song story climaxes so the change in her singing mirrors the arc of the love story they're telling. Mamamoo is one of the best pop groups I've heard at using dynamics in both individual phrases and as part of the overall song story.

This song is by Seo Ji Won. He was a ballad singer and genious composer and decided to leave this world when he was 19, in 1996. Wheein covered the song for "hospital playlist", a popular kdrama and this song topped the charts again. This was the ost for quite of a sad episode.

Ah “With My Tears” is actually a Wheein ost solo. It’s been said but you guys should check out her other ballads, (they have live versions) “Goodbye” and “Anymore.” Also her last album, she did a video for all the tracks! also it's unique compared to singers that sing with clarity, etc and it's perfect for ballads and r&b. Minseok has powerful vocals, but he will never be able to sing 25 or Candy as good as Wheein does, and in Love Shot she goes even lower than these 2 songs.

Thank you for reacting to Wheein, I really loved all your coments an opinions, I love hearing people that know what they're talking about. I wanted to say that Wheein sings this song in a more breathy way as an stylistic choice, it's a testament to the feeling she wants to convey of the public, I like to call this song a 'mourning song' because of it's history (the original singer died at the age of 19, weeks before releasing his 2nd cd which contained this song, indeed if you see the original MV of this song it shows images of his funeral) that's why this became an instant classic song, and is not only sad, like is really a SAD song, like heartbreaking, and Wheein did a wonderful job recreating that feeling on her cover OST; also she is trying to harmonize with him a lot and I think she shouldn't have, bcs he's such a good singer that her using her full voice wouldn't made a difference (but Wheein is called the queen of collaborations bcs she does exactly that, harmonize with any type of voice and singer) I felt that that truly takes a lot of that feeling she puts on the song, like she is opening up your heart at putting it back together, that made her version loved by the public, an absolute succes. I loved the duet, but while I also think Minseok is a fascinating and fantastic singer (I fell in love with his voice) I think it really gave another feel the song, that it really doesn't get trough us like the Wheein version did, so that said I obviously prefer Wheein's version, breathy tone and all. Please do a reaction to her song Anymore live! It's a version called 'Anymore color live' (it has eng subs and it's just Wheein voice + Piano 😍😍)

This is the second song of the performance. First Wheein does a solo cover of EXO's loveshot. Both in that and this she's using her lower range a lot more than we usually see. Pure speculation, I think she chose to do it because she does spend most of her time in Mamamoo on the high end. In this song I think she liked being the low to his high. I hope you will do other solo performance of the other Mamamoo members. Solar has a couple of recent OSTs on her solarsido channel. Adrenaline and Bluebird that would be good.

Not related to Wheein, but I would honestly love if you guys reacted to the “battle” rounds on the Voice and chose your personal winners for those performances based on technique/personal preferences! Love the fact that you mention that personal preference doesn’t necessarily equal better and love that you’re encouraging people to consider the way they want to sing! I feel like my core philosophy is identical to yours, but because I’m influenced by so many different styles of music, I want to explore shaping my ‘natural’ voice in different contexts that make the most sense for the style of whatever song I’m singing. That way I sound and feel like me while also achieving a specific vision I had for the song! It’s really circumstantial - feels like the best of both worlds for myself!

His voice is really special. He's a duo with his friend, the piano player, who is also very gifted on the keys-he's wonderfully emotive with his playing while keeping it clean, if that makes sense. The duo is called Melomance (멜로망스)and their breakthrough song was Gift (선물) and it swept through the country when it was released here. Everyone knows that song and his voice is recognized by everyone in the country.

Wheein is famous for her breathy voice and falsetto, but she could go full voice too...she did it a lot a lot in shows and concerts. Also, the song that MeloMance became famous for is the song [Gift]. For reference, Rosé and Onew performed a number of famous songs live at the beach. It was filmed on a TV show, and you will feel lovely and happy when you watch the video. This video is about 3 months old as of now. You must search by the names of Rosé and Onew.

ha, that 'just found another amazing singer' thing is actually pretty common with wheein... every single person she's ever worked with for collabs/features, every single artist she's suggested songs from... they're all incredible in their own fields (and she suggests a lot of western music, too) as for 'with my tears"... the song itself is a cover... she's done it on her own before for an ost to a drama, and now performing it together with the melomance singer (the pianist is the other member of melomance). hearing her sing that live on her own is incredible... and there are a few lives for it out there they've got several other songs either already out or coming out in the future with this show... i think they recorded it all at once but it's being shared out over several weeks. first we had wheein singing exo's "love shot" on her own (just with piano accompaniment), then this song... the most recent release so far is the two performing mamamoo's "starry night". really curious what we'll get in the future from them

Melomance is one of my favorite groups in Korean music. The vocalist is Kim Minseok, and the other half is the pianist Donghwan. Minseok is probably one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. You should definitely check out more from Melomance, Minseok is a power vocal and he was definitely holding back to fit Wheein's song and vibe. I love the points you made around the 13-minute mark and onwards! A good number of the vocal teachers and coaches that I follow on social media (especially Instagram) are very big on how one should sing or "approach" specific segments of songs using different placements and it has made me quite insecure, thinking that if I can't approach the song the exact same way, then I'm not singing well at all. No shade or disrespect for those coaches and teachers of course (and I'm sure that some of them are advising with vocal health in mind, especially for songs that require a lot more effort and technique) but I just really appreciate your sentiments/views on it :) and you explained everything so well too. I really love your analysis and your channel has became one of my favorites. For this reaction, I like you two to talk about the breathness, closure of vocal cords, efficiency, resonance, subjective in music, and blending voices. As a physicist, I really appreciate that you pointed out that every person has different instrument to make voice and judging is based on preference/bias. Speaking of contrast to Wheein, inside Mamamoo, people first think about Solar as she uses aspiration less and does powerful belting often with more closure of vocal cords. Then, Hwasa does a lot of different things in between. It is always interesting to compare their voices and see how they switch techniques in different situactions. So, I would love to see more comparisons about their voices and detailed reactions for their solo projects. About preference, I like all of their voices but my preference of singing is when they sing more cleary, less airy, and good resonance as that is when I feel more emotionally connected. Besides my favorite Mamamoo, I also love the voice of MeloMance. I would love to see more reactions about them.

I think sometimes the language barrier makes it hard for those that don't speak Korean as to why some songs sound "breathy", "whispery" during parts or soft. It is like this to make the lyrics shine. If you understand the lyrics, it really gives you goosebumps the way they sing it.

agree i love korean ballad songs and i wish i already mastered korean language so that i can feel more when these talented vocalists sing. English translation doesn’t do justice to beautiful songs such as with my tears.

I feel Chase when he talks about trying to not be too breathy for health issues. Im working on that right now. I love singing but a lot of the time my throat ends up feeling kind of sore, which makes me sound a bit off and it puts me off singing. Currently working on it with my voice teacher and speech therapist tho!

I started voice lessons for the same reason! (But classical training). Found out the problem was not even the breath that much. I was singing (and talking) way below my range, from the throat, which was tiring my cords. Apparently it happens to lots of shy people haha Hope you get better!!

Glad to hear you say "how you speak is how you sing". That's exactly how I want to sing. Kind of like speaking the melody but holding notes where it fits. Trying to get a feeling that I'm speaking the lyrics and it just happens to be to a melody. I haven't sung much in a while, though, and I've lost a lot of my technique but very resently I've started trying to get back into it. You guys just added to my inspiration to keep at it. Thanks!

You need to see more Melomance songs, Melomance is a duo( the pianist and the singer), they have beautiful songs, I recommend the song ''Gift'', is a famous song in korea.

i cant agree more to you guys!!! theyre both wonderful! they are doing their part on this duet, and yes i agree that it was unfair to her voice but still she killed it! she still made this song best and i dont know anyone who can do it better. i love hiiiiiissss voice tooo im kinda obsessed too hahaha its so different but in an amazing way!! Wheein's voice is a dream... i hope i will have kids who can sing like her cause im definitely Solar type of singing hahhaha

It's funny how voices and tastes work, I actually didn't like Melonmance voice at all, because I'm so used to Wheein's version of the song, his voice irritated me so much 😅 I can't deny it's unique, but I actually didn't like him at all, but I kept my thoughts on that on the original video, because I didn't want to be toxic. Nothing against him, his voice just wasn't of my taste, and you guys loved him so much, on the other hand, because I think art is subjective, like you guys said. But I agree, because Wheein it's so good at blending, she definitely held herself back to not outshine Melomance. Also, please react to Wheein on Begin Again signing Love Shot! She signs alone there and I feel she shines way more there!

There is definitely Melodyne done on post-processing for the streaming cause koreans are very perfectionist. You can hear it working mostly on Minseok's (Melomance's singer) vibrato. But I agree with Chase that Minseok sings with some overtones which are great for mixing, working with that forward resonance.
