About Morissette's squeaks, she actually does a whistle closing vocal folds. The registration change happens so fast that it causes this feat of "sliding" from a whistle to belting. Here, in Brazil, we have a singer who uses this resource a lot, her name is Joelma

This is my favourite version of this song that she has done. It's more raw and the fact that she was running on almost empty and was not 100% well. She's just awesome. Also, every time I hear Chase talk, I definitely hear the "s" sounds clearly which you guys talked about in previous Morisette videos. Happy new year you guys

Personally, I enjoy the live band version with the green gown because it was perfection. Not to mention, she attempted all of the high notes flawlessly. Still, I can definitely understand why you like this one. I definitely enjoy the belts where she goes "tayong multi" and the one right after because they are literally perfect.

Hi guys, I'm a little late to watch and respond to this, but thank you for your reaction and continued support of Morissette! I especially love what you said between ~13:00-14:00 about her stylistic choice to use vocal breaks in some of her performances. What you said there closely aligns with my personal philosophy regarding stylistic choices singers make. Was it intentional? Did it feel ok? Do you want to continue doing it? Ok, then let's determine the healthiest way possible for you to continue singing in your style. I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but whistle register has always come naturally to Morissette. Her old record label discovered she could already do it, as opposed to them going "ok Morissette, we want you to sound a certain way so we're going to have you learn whistle register." Because she uses the same mechanism to produce the vocal breaks ("squeaks"), I believe those also come more naturally to her than to some other singers. The other thing I wanted to comment on that you mentioned is her sitting down/crossed legs, and how spot on I think Chase's remarks were. I've watched lord knows how many Morissette performances, and one thing I noticed is that she will often choose to sit even when the option to stand is also available. She grew up playing piano/keyboard, so I think sitting feels comfortable to her and she often prefers it as an anchoring mechanism. Anyway, enough babbling and thanks again for the video. I love the work you guys do on your channel!

She always brings up and along the emotions from the words she sings, thats why she adds heaviness or weight to her voice. Because this song is a story telling about an unhealthy relationship of a man and a woman ☺️🤗
@ronaldnunez89212 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chase and Melia, for this reaction and analysis. Morissette as a singer and artist is next level, she is beyond and above the ordinary singer. She has a lot of skills and tecnhniques, like her signature squeaks and growls, and whistle notes, that other singers can only dream of, or try to emulate but simply cannot. Aside from that, she is a master of build-up and dynamics. She doesn't give it all in one go, but usually starts low and soft, and continuously builds up the momentum, until reaching that "liberating" high where she gives it all. That's why we as listeners and watchers get captivated by her every performance, we simply cannot get our eyes and ears off her until the end. An amazing artist and vocalist indeed, the Asia's Phoenix. 🥰
@eggsyexplores60082 жыл бұрын
I think the tonal shift you mention in the key change part was a deliberate move, I believe. The song basically starts as if the singer is unsure if she's ready to move on whereas towards the end, she sings with more conviction that she is moving on and letting go. With that in mind, and Morisette's storytelling prowess, I believe these small changes in the way she sang the same lines but with different "conviction" were all part of her taking us through the journey of the lyrics of the song.

Continue educating us. Other people might be offended for not comprehending that your channel is not only just to appreciate the voice but also to help people understand things to achieve the technical proficiency that every singer is hoping for. People can be rude when they only care about what other might say about an artist, besides, those people aren’t probably a singer who comes across your channel reacting to their idol. Continue doing a great job. 👏👏👏

Enjoying your reactions. Thanks for reacting to Morissette. I have heard her say that her squeaks are actually activating her whistle register for a brief moment. Also, I don't think her squeaks are compromising her vocal health. If you hear her talking and laughing when she is just having fun, she will sometimes squeak. It's just part of her natural voice, and her style is to throw it in her performance for dramatic effect. I think it's working.

I think the timing of her "letting go" and "sounding free" in the latter part of the song greatly has something to do with what the song means. The song is basically a monologue of whether she should hold on or let go (of the one she loves), whether to put the other person first or herself. And in the end she decides that she was going to love herself first and let that love go, that's probably the reason it sounds so "liberating" towards the end. She's not just a singer, but a wonderful storyteller using the lyrics, the mood, and all the elements of the song. Just wow.

Not being bias here but they actually released a video prior to her wish bush performance of that song and you'll see (hear) that she has no falsetto and stuffs. To make it simple, her voice was not in the condition to sing that song. You can literally here it at the last chorus, she was a little bit struggling, avoiding ng some high notes, moving her mouth (and even her body) away from the mic 'cause maybe she might not hit the note or might make a mistake.

The aspirated consonants with Filipinos most of our consonants are not aspirated but i have noticed that singers usually used aspiration in some of the consonants as a way of breathing when they hit high notes or when they are getting ready to hit high notes.

There is so much in this performance that most people did not really know. Though the performance is fascinating, but this is not the usual performance delivery of Morissette of this song. She was not feeling well due to flu that cause here to almost have lost her voice. She had to take steroids medication just to help a little bit with the vocal production within the day of performance. Few hours before the performance, she was explaining that she could not access here head or falsetto voice causing her to switch a more breathy or airy vocal production. In this performance, she was extremely in control of her breathing just to ensure that voice would come out and sustain until ends of each sentences. I don't think she even minded here if the microphone signal was hot or not. I think she was trying to ensure that she had all the needed breath work to fully sustain each difficult parts of the song given her vocal condition. Her apical-dental (t) 3:16, labio-plosives (p,b) 3:18, sibilants (s) 10:06 were most of the time not that well defined as she would normally do in her other same song performances, because maybe she was ensuring she had all the breath she needed to make it through each stanza she glides through. Her vocal squeks are intentional though I agree it really does make a damage possibly in the long run but I think her worsened polyp issue when she was younger paved way to how she has been able to access this technique easily after the surgery back then. I felt this performance of her made her tired due to more effort she had to do in the breath work compared to her other powerful Gusto ko Nang Bumitaw performances when she is well. You can see that in her body and how they show the tenses conspicuously compared to her effortless performances with the same song. Nevertheless, it was still a very good performance.

*ABOUT MORISSETTE'S SQUEAK* Morissette said in one of her interviews that the way she executes her squeak is in a same mechanism as her *whistle register* that's why it sounds high and the "cry" suppose always LANDS on the correct/particular pitch and NOT on a RANDOM NOTE, that's why it sounds purposeful. She said that she just SLIPS into her whistle register just ON THAT PARTICULAR PART then go back again on her normal voice (chest/head).

@@ChaseandMelia She's not doing the *"I'll just crack my voice to it"* but rather, she's *WHISTLING* very quickly. That's why it sounds high pitch on that particular part as you can notice. just transitioning onto that whistle voice *in a snap* to create that *crack/cry* effect.
@DETTERIOR2 жыл бұрын
@@ChaseandMelia Well, but doing WHISTLE REGISTER itself (depends on how safe and polished your technique is.) doesn't guarantee 100% voice health security. What I'm trying say here is that *SHE'S FULLY AWARE* of where she going to ON THAT PARTICULAR PART.. I mean.. *EVERY SECONDS OF IT HAPPENING.* And doing *reckless abandon vocal gymnastics* and being *NOT AWARE OF WHAT SHE IS ATTACKING FOR* can definitely cost her something bad, specially if it's happening at "ceiling of her voice" *AND THAT'S NOT CASE HERE.*
@DETTERIOR2 жыл бұрын
@@ChaseandMelia And *she's doing it for years already* and her gigs schedule on those times are not a joke. She had very little day offs and vocal rests but barely showing any signs of vocal damage while still doing them on like EVERY song she's singing. and I think *THAT'S A TESTAMENT* on how SOLID her technique is in terms for executing it. Doing 5 concerts/gigs a week paired with *"NOT A JOKE SETLISTS"* is indeed NOT A JOKE but a *REAL TEST* to prove if your technique *IS REALLY HEALTHY/CORRECT.*

I'm not qualified to analyze her technically but one of the thing I love about her is her way she tells me her story through her singing. It is like she is telling a deep, suppressed feeling to her best friend, a sister, a mother or her self about what she feels in an intimate matter. Then you add her beauty, her vocal talent, the fact that she is singing sitting down crossed legged and still hit those long phrases and hight notes. It is like getting an audible orgasm specially if you've experienced that particular situation so you can relate.
