I recently discovered Voicemeeter Banana and what it can do for your microphone. In this video I walk through how I have Voicemeeter setup with my Blue Yeti to make it sound a lot better by using the built in compression and EQ. Also, because it's all done live there's not much left to do in post-production in Audacity after it's recorded.
I forgot to mention in the video that you'll want to play around with the EQ a lot. I'm still playing around with mine, listening to my videos with different speakers and headphones. I like a lot of bass, but mine may be a bit too much.

If you increase the gate meter it changes how sensitive it is to smaller noises, so you can eliminate the background hissing.

cable a and b are virtual cables which youve downloaded and the VM vaio and aux are addition free ones, if you go into sound settings then you can split application sounds, ie/ system, spotify and chrome sound and control their sounds independantyl. so output music to music while stremaing and not recording nor your guest hearing.

How do I configure VoiceMeeter Banana to have a Cable input from the computer sounds like you have for your Hardware Input 2?
@Skullkid16945
@Skullkid16945 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but the reason he had VA-Audio Virtual Cable on Input 2 is due to installing the VA-Cable which is also made by vb-audio. Now it isn't necessary to use to hear your windows sound however. Instead, you can just use the Voicemeeter Aux Input as system default playback device, and for default recording device, check which one of the Voicemeeter Outputs is registering sound when you speak into your mic and set it to that one. For me, it was Voicemeeter Output. In Voicemeeter, you would use your mic in Hardware Input 1, leave the others empty unless needed. VA-Cable is good here if you want to send audio from program that support selecting output device. Example: Sending audio from Ableton Live to VA-Cable and then receiving it in Voicemeeter so you can pipe it through your mic output and play sound through voice chat in games. Good for playing piano, guitar, etc or just using soundboards in voice chats. Back to Voicemeeter, Virtual Inputs is where you would control your system sound. If you used Voicemeeter Aux Input, then you control system sound from the Voicemeeter AUX section. Change it to output sound to A1, and put A1 as your speakers or headset. You should be able to hear everything your system would make, as well as control the audio of each program below it with a slider, or mute it by clicking the M button beside its slider. Your mic should still be outputting on B1 only, unless you want to hear yourself, then you could output it to A1 as well, thus playing captured audio to your headset as well, allowing to hear yourself. However, what you will hear is raw sound without the EQ. To be able to hear the output of B1, go back into Windows's sound settings, then recording and find the Voicemeeter Output you are using. Go to its properties and then the listen tab. Check "Listen to this device" and click apply and all audio it receives will now play through windows audio.

All you'll basically have to do is send your microphone (by itself) to one of the Voicemeeter outputs and set that output as the microphone in dxtory. You might have to play around with it a bit.

I watched this video because I was looking for the compression/gate settings on Banana, but I got to say, if you're looking for how to set up Voicemeeter Banana this is not the ideal video for you to watch, the set-up can be a bit messy and highly dependent on what you are trying to achieve so you do probably want to understand the way each bit of the software works before going straight in. A couple of quick tips if you do want to give it a try though: 1) Set your Windows system sounds on Playback Devices to VoiceMeeter Input. This will make all normal browser, gameplay and OS sounds play into Virtual Input 1. 2) On your hardware outs, set your normal sound hardware (Headphones or Speakers) to A1. 3) Route your Voicemeeter VAIO under Virtual Inputs to A1 by simply selecting A1 and disabling the rest. Your sound should now work as normal. 4) If you are trying to set up a microphone, select it under Hardware Input 1 (HI1). 6) To hear what your microphone is picking up, route your mic from HI1 to A1, that will send the sound into your Speakers/Headphones (S/H). 7) To send the sound from your microphone to another piece of software, route HI1 to B1. 8) B1 is a Recording Device on Windows named VoiceMeeter Output, whilst B2 is Voicemeeter Aux Output. (Not to be confused with the inputs under playback devices which you used in step 1 for Virtual Input 1 and 2). 9) Use VoiceMeeter Output as your INPUT device in Audacity, OBS etc... If streaming, for example, you can set your microphone (HI1) to send to B1, and then set your Virtual Input 1 (system sounds) to output to both A1 (S/H) and B1. In OBS, B1 (VoiceMeeter Output) would then contain your game/system sounds AND microphone sounds together, whilst you would only hear system sounds and not yourself.

Kyle Blane Plays absolutely, I don't disagree at all, I just looked at the comments as I was looking to see if anyone had what I was looking for and I saw a few people who had no familiarity with the software and couldn't make it work, thus assumed that was happening. Maybe I implied that in the way I opened the comment but wasn't really a shot at you or the video :D

Thanks for the video, was awesome! Have you found any noticeable difference in quality doing live processing through Banana vs doing all processing later in Audacity?
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
While I don’t use this live processing any more (I’ve got an XLR mic going into physical processors), I still say yes, especially for the compressor. I’ve been scolded by some for saying this. I’ve been told the compressor in Voicemeeter isn’t a “real” compressor and that it’s just an extra gain knob. Which is funny because I work with professional audio equipment at my day job and lots of mixers have a single knob compressor just like that. Also, they have no reason to believe this outside of a hunch. Anyways, others have said you can get the same results with Audacity compression, but I was never able to do that. Hope that helps
@Morax
@Morax 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting thanks. I'll have to do some of my own testing. If you still have the old mic, I'd LOVE to hear the side-by-side difference between a USB/digital mic and an XLR going through physical processors! New video idea? :)
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
That might be a possibility. I gave the Yeti to my brother so I'm sure I could borrow it back for a bit. In the mean time there are some comparisons already, though they're a bit wordier than mine would be. lol :D Also, I think they may just be comparing all of them as USB mics, not the XLR. Hello Kyle, having an issue. When setting my hardware output to my headset. I can hear myself, how do I stop this?
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
On the left group of faders (the inputs) you probably have the one that controls your mic being sent to the output assigned to the headset. If that's not the case, another output is also sending audio to your headset. Turn the different A1, A2, etc... on/off to confirm which one is going where.

@kyleblaneplays

That depends on each piece of software. It will (I think) always grab the system audio, but if the software has options to choose an audio output device to use, then yes it can be split off from the rest.

To be fair, your mic is gonna pick up more audio with the compression up to 2 because you're on a condenser microphone instead of a dynamic mic. Also, MME is a higher latency input, it's recommended to use WDM or KS

As far as recording gaming with action and having say discord recorded at the same time, do you know what settings one should use?
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 7 жыл бұрын
It's not something I've done yet, but how I would theoretically do it is keep Action setup the way it normally is. Recording PC audio and my Mic on separate tracks. Then I would send Discord's audio out to one of the virtual inputs of VoiceMeeter. Then send that to both my headphones and a virtual aux out which is then recorded in Audacity. You'll end up with one extra audio file (from Audacity) to sync up with the video. The other option (which results in high quality audio and is technically easier) is to NOT record Discord audio and have your friends send you their mic audio. This obviously only works well if they can record what you need, but you have their direct audio recording, not their voice chat audio.
@Macenator
@Macenator 7 жыл бұрын
Ill give it a shot! Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately i can only try option 1 as the people i play with dont record. That would be way easier lol
@kyleblaneplays

I had a feeling that might be the case. Worst case scenario (if you can't get it working recording separately to Audacity) you can turn the game audio down a lot and capture Discord with Action.
@jwoodCAD
@jwoodCAD 7 жыл бұрын
Excellent tips, thanks! If you have a program that can manually set the audio out (such as Discord and Teamspeak), you can use virtual inputs to bring in these separately so you could, for example, record them to different channels than other (program) audio. Bringing them into Voicemeter means you can apply EQ and such, as well as pipe them into whatever hardware you'd like.

I have a very different setup now, so I can't remember exactly, but I think it was somewhere in the 70-90 range. This depends on a lot of things though. If you have a Yeti (like I had in this recording) It's best for you to play with both that volume slider and the gain on the microphone. I learned a lot by recording tests at various combinations of levels.

Ok, I was able to get rid of the leak from playback (input 1) into mic (input 2) by increasing the noise gate on the mic. I just don't understand why playback is leaking into the mic. To be sure it's not somehow escaping from my headset ear pads, I reduced the volume to 0 and there is STILL activity on the mic WITHOUT adjusting using the gate. In your video, at around 2:20 where you dinged the PC, I couldn't tell if the dings were being picked up by the mic because you spoke at about the same time, but it would be interesting to do the same thing again on a silent mic and see if there is activity on the mic.

I don't know if I'm just a noob but my computer audio doesn't show up in the second input. And because of this, it's picking up my voice, but it's also picking up my computer audio (aka music being played). I can't seem to get it to not record my computer audio and my voice at the same time. :/
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
I'll walk through a few steps that should hopefully find the problem. - Right click on your volume icon by the clock and select Playback Devices - Right click on VB-Audio Virtual Cable and make it your default device, then click OK - In VoiceMeeter left click at the top of the second input and select CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) - Left click at the top of the first input and ensure your microphone is selected there Your voice and computer audio should now be split between those two channels. To ensure your recording software is picking up one and not the other play around with B1 and B2 (the virtual outputs) for those channels. B1 and B2 correlate with the VoiceMeeter Aux Output and VoiceMeeter Output recording devices you'll want to use as the input in your recording software.

I'm now using OBS because I'm on a new, much better computer. OBS ran like hot garbage on my old system but Action was amazing with the lower-end computer. So I say if your system can handle OBS and you don't mind the more detailed and difficult options and interface, stick with OBS. However Action is much lighter weight and has a great user interface.

Is it possible to improve noise reduction through voice meeter banana?
@kyleblaneplays

Some people use the noise gate, but I don’t recommend that. It’s not meant for that. OBS has the ability to do noise reduction in the audio filters. Too much though and it totally messes up your audio.

Even if I could (I can't because I have a very different setup now that uses hardware to achieve these things) it wouldn't work. Our systems would have to be exactly identical for it to properly transfer over. Also, it's honestly better for you to get it setup from scratch, you'll learn a lot more about the software.

I've been asked to do this a number of times and I really think it's better for you if you play around with it and set it up for yourself. A) I'm not sure if loading my settings would even work. B) Your setup and your voice are completely different than mine. C) It'll teach you the software better which will ultimately make you sound better.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to set up the eq? For removing white noise from the pc specifically? Or just what each EQ nob does? Theres so many.
@kyleblaneplays
@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
Best way to learn the nobs is to mess with them. The main idea is that one nob adjusts the vertical position (how high or low), another adjust how narrow/wide and the third moves it horizontally across the line. For removing white noise you'll want to drop the high end of the EQ down. You won't be able to remove it completely, but that should dampen it a bit.

@kyleblaneplays 6 жыл бұрын
This has indeed happened to me before. It's because Voicemeeter installs some virtual audio devices which it doesn't remove when you uninstall. (Not sure if this is a technical limitation or poor design) I'm pretty sure this is what I did to fix it. Good luck! forum.vb-audio.com/viewtopic.php?t=381
@kapam4061
@kapam4061 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure if you ever fixed this but even though you've deleted the actual program, Voicemeeter tends to leave a part of itself in your devices. You'll have to go to your "Device Manager" in your control panel. Find the tab that says "Sound, video and game controllers," and then find anything that relates to Voicemeeter and uninstall it.

@kyleblaneplays

I'm not sure I completely understand your problem, but I'll make this suggestion. You have to make sure that your Windows audio devices for input and output are both set properly. Playback (output) should be VB-Audio Virtual Cable, Recording should be one of the Voicemeeter Outputs. You then have to play around with sending different inputs to different outputs in VoiceMeeter.
@kyleblaneplays

The virtual audio stuff is setup during the installation process of VoiceMeeter. So make sure you completely uninstall and then try installing it again. That has solved similar issues for me in the past.

@someunownaccount1006
@someunownaccount1006 4 жыл бұрын
Jdado04 There are certain types of sound types in audio. Stereo is the default to where audio is separated in to two tracks;left and right. While Mono, hence the name, takes the two left and right tracks and combines them into one singular track. For a better experience use stereo, although there may be a quality decrease when using mono preset, it could make you louder if that’s what your aiming for. Sticking with stereo is recommended.

The output from Voicemeeter that is being sent to Discord has the Discord audio in it (most like the PC audio). Figure out which output is being sent to Discord and turn that input off. Hopefully that all makes sense, it's hard to describe in general terms.

Well if I may offer some advice from one random person on the internet to another. It made it really difficult to read. By emphasizing more words you emphasize less words. When you emphasize words like MY and ME it can come across as entitled. It makes sense if there's a reason to emphasize your personal experience over the experience being presented by the other party, but that wasn't the case here. No one had previously claimed that this wasn't happening to them. Some of the words you chose to emphasize make reading it odd. Try reading it out loud to yourself. Adding emphasis to these words in particular really stops the flow of the statements: HERE, OPENED, WHAT, DO I'm guessing you have experiences with people on the internet not properly reading what you've written so you feel the need to do this, which is understandable. Fortunately, I'm not one of those people. lol Good luck
