Welcome to the VP rabbit hole. A little background, they were on the Sing Off the same season (4) as Home Free. Home Free won. During the contest, the judges said Tim Foust (Home Free's bass with a 5+ octave range) was the only TRUE bass in the competition. Geoff Castellucci (4 octave range) is/was a baritone that could occasionally hit the lower octaves but not sustain them. After they (HF) won & the bands went on tour together, Tim worked with Geoff & some of the other baritones on tour & showed them how to hit the lower octaves & sustain them withoit hurting themselves. Geoff has since then done some tutorials here on YT to help others do the same (to pay it forward so to speak). If you go down the Home Free rabbit hole, do NOT do Mayday until you know which member does what part. As far as beatboxing goes, Layne is good, however Adam Rupp of Home Free is a 2X world champion beatboxer voted as such by other beatboxers and judges in European a cappella competitions. To have your mind completely blown. Check out Adam Rupp's Drum Solo. There are several, but I suggest you start with the oldest first (he's in a red plaid shirt in that one). He is commonly referred to as a freak of nature because of the things he can mimic & do percussive wise. Something to get your feet wet with HF is Man of Constant Sorrow or Ring of Fire feat Avi Kaplan (formerly of PTX). You can appreciate where they all came from/have grown if you go back & watch the season 4 of The Sing Off. I'm a new sub here & I am looking forward to your trips into the various rabbit holes. It's been said that if a cappella was high school, PTX would be the student council, Voiceplay is the theater nerds & Home Free would be the tailgaters out in the parking lot partying on down. Voctave is preatty awesome too. I have only seen a couple of their vids though. HF has over 150 vids on YT, which doesn't necessarily include their solo stuff too. HF has a lot of "fun" covers (some original stuff too). If you want to see their playful side check out their Butts Remix.

Geoff, the bass, has a nearly 5 octave range (C#1-A5). That last note was a subharmonic E1. Even in chest voice, Geoff is good to F1, which is still insane for a bass singer. Then hearing his upper range is crazy. Geoff Castellucci does solo work, as well. Geoff's cover of "Blackbird" is absolutely incredible; he does all parts himself, including playing the keyboard.

Voiceplay's lineup from March 2018 until mid-2020 was: Earl Elkins Jr (high tenor), Eli [pronounced Ellie] Jacobson (2nd tenor), Jessie Nunn III [professional name JNone] (baritone), Geoff Castellucci (bass), and Layne Stein (percussion). That's who you'll see in a good share of their vids. Earl left the group in 2020. JNone left in 2021, got a singing job in the military. And there were COVID restrictions too. So their music vid production was cut way back, and they had guest artists (male and female) in what they did make. I assume those guestings were also auditions in a sense. Recently they added Cesar De La Rosa as a permanent member and listed him as a tenor/baritone. So maybe they still consider themselves one member short, maybe not. Like the other acapella groups you're exploring, Voiceplay never uses instruments unless you can see the instruments in the vid. Layne sometimes plays violin. One other thing that started in 2020 due to COVID etc was Geoff doing solo vids on his own channel. In most cases, he just multitracks himself and does all the parts. ("Melekalikemaha" is an exception.) In his solo work, he does use instruments. To see Voiceplay just showcase their vocal talents straight up, try "Can't Help Falling In Love," "Tennessee Whiskey" or "Carry On My Wayward Son." To see them go full-blown costumes, makeup and drama, check out the other three songs they did from The Nightmare Before Christmas, or "The Little Mermaid Medley," or "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." BTW here's the original Oogie Boogie song that they're covering. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ24g3uQarmZebM

Layne also has a really sweet tenor, and identifies as a baritone. folks who track this stuff say Layne has the widest range of any of them, but his bass notes aren't as round and beautiful as Geoff's are. They ALL have wide ranges, Geoff's is said to be 5 octaves and gets the most chatter. Thanks for reacting to this... it was so much fun to watch. Every single time I see them I end with a smile on my face. Beautiful voices, amazing arrangements - and they know how to play. Truly, there are too many serious people in the world, and not nearly enough who know how to let loose, be silly and just play! Geoff refers to their humor as "our brand of dumb."

You are definitely going to appreciate all the effort that VoicePlay put into their videos. Most of the vocalists have worked with Disney before, and thus have some performance background. Layne is also co-owner (with a former VoicePlay member, Tony Wakim) of a video production studio, and some of VoicePlay's recent videos have been filmed there. They put a lot into their costuming and makeup- their version of You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch makes them look like they wandered off the set of Jim Carrey's film, Grinch included. But even when they opt for a simpler video format, the vocals are always, always on point, and the arrangements always have surprising and creative elements.

Watch the Little Mermaid Medley by VP with Rachel Potter as Ariel. Layne has Geoff painted blue to sing the male Ursula role and he does a D5 to D1 run that will blow your socks off. Layne and Geoff have been friends since childhood and both being tall, they are seated in the video and watching the interplay between them is hysterical as Layne keeps trying to make Geoff laugh. Eli (pronounced L-E) is the short bald guy with a great range who gets Kiss the Girl, J None (now in the US Navy) gets Oscar winning Under the Sea, Rachel does but the Ariel and Vanessa, and even Layne, the beatboxer, sings the song the insane chef had in the kitchen about Little Fishes. Earl (The high tenor with the beard) left the group replaced, though they asked Rachel potter and DeeJay Young, both having sung with them multiple time. Each have other commitments. Ashley Diane, a young jazz singer and friend of Cesar de la Rosa, J None's replacement, did a bang up job on If I were a Rich Man and may be in the running for Earl's position. Layne and Geoff do most of the arranging but all have multiple skills from lighting to using CGI graphics for backgrounds. All live FL in the Orlando area and often use a studio Layne owns for their videos while Geoff's wife acts as producer. The Big Three a capella groups were once described as: Pentatonix - the Student Council Voice Play - the theater nerds Home Free - the guys throwing a tailgate party out in the parking lot.
