Did you guys know that two of VoicePlay's releases are being considered for 2025 Grammy nomination? "Hellfire" (in one category) and another Michael Jackson cover, "The Way You Make Me Feel," in two categories. Hoping that the guys receive the nominations and get the recognition they deserve even though they are 100% independent.

Since you all mentioned the Steadi-cam operator and how handy it is for filming, I'm going to remind you that one does not NEED it unless you want that camera movement they were doing here. For instance, if you go back to Geoff's outro scenes after his cover of "Unshaken" you can see that it was filmed with a stationary camera on a tripod that he just sets to film him without a separate camera operator. It CAN be done without the big expenses, but it must be well-planned. His most recent "Song of Durin" I believe was filmed that way, there just are not any free BTS shots to witness it. I am going to say that a big part of "How?" VoicePlay can accomplish such great videos on such a reasonably lower budget has to do with all of them learning how to do different aspects of the process themselves. This particular video is filmed on the same 'blank' space that they used for "Hellfire" last year. This is at Layne's production studio "PattyCake Productions" which is really not a terribly large space. The studio is in an old Hallmark store. Now it was a rather large store and we're also not talking about the front of store only, but when you watch some of the behind the scenes you can recognize that this 'stage' is directly behind another set-up that is recognizable in other videos. And it is only the cut in the filming that has J running right for PattyCake's actual back-door. In real life he goes through that other set and their Changing & Make-up area to get to that door. That amazing lighting is thanks to Eli programming a computer set-up to run the lights while they are all 'on-stage'. The really cool part of that is that he programs it to change at key spots, connected to the audio, so when they go for a change of camera angle and set the audio back to that spot, the lights match even from a different angle. As someone who worked in advertising my whole adult life, I tell you I was instantaneously jealous when I realized what they had there! And lastly, I'm sorry to inform you that your dream of watching them record will probably never be realized. Each one of them has their studio set-up at home, where they generally do their own recordings and then send it on to whomever is responsible for that month's arrangement (and so also for the initial audio). I think that sometimes the 'featured' artist is recorded at one of their studios, at least I believe that's the way it is in the Outro scenes on "Drunken Sailor" where Geoff is shown recording José. This was really great fun watching this with you guys. Your reactions are always stellar and I always learn something new. Thanks for a great time!

This would be a great video to watch the BTS, even if you just get a short-term membership. Kathy brainstormed the idea of the bite and the doll Layne yeeted. She visited a Halloween store in the same mall as PattyCake and put the whole thing together in about the same time it took to do her makeup. Their makeup artist had the idea for the zombie transformations. And watching how Goeff did the fall back and standing back up part was hilarious. Eli had the lighting programmed along with the music so it changes automatically. It’s mind boggling how they put it all together with a really low budget and simple effect hacks.

So glad to see that you are reacting to VoicePlay's Thriller. I love it! VoicePlay is so fun! There is a little bit of the BTS for this video in the outro. The cool thing about VoicePlay is how many skills they have mastered to do so very much themselves. This video was filmed at Pattycake Studios (co-owned by Layne and former VP member, Tony). Eli does the lighting. This was Geoff's project, so he did the arrangement, video editing, etc. Vincent Price did the narration in Michael Jackson's original video. VP does an excellent job with the credit in each video description listing who did what for that project. Of course Layne has a carrot....J. None is back (running joke).

I believe that this was a 13+ hour video shoot day with all of the progressive makeup changes. When they shoot using a steadicam, they hire a cameraman & his assistant. They seem to do the filming themselves for videos when they are using only fixed cameras. VoicePlay's release this past Christmas, "Jingle Bell Rock," was filmed on Tony's iPhone at Pattycake Studios because they weren't able to get a cameraman.

Wow - the Vincent Price voiceover is the main thing that I remember about the MJ video (besides the zombie dance moves)! Hard to believe that didn't make any impression on either of you. Speaking of putting a doll in makeup - Kathy, Geoff's wife, is credited as being the "floor zombie", while Greta the Gruesome (a doll Kathy had to go out and find the day of filming, because it was her idea) is credited as being the "flying zombie stunt double". Rick Underwood, their makeup artist, had to makeup the doll to match Kathy's makeup, even though in the final shot you can't even see the face at all.

Kathy is the floor zombie that bites Layne's ankle, but she has a stunt-double (Greta Gruesome doll) that Layne kicks into the next park. Vincent Price was the original voice here and that is the wording. Pattycake Productions studio (Tony Wakim and Layne are the coowners) is where this is and they have the Steadi-Cams.

VoicePlay records their own vocals in their home studios. These sessions are available only on Patreon BUT there's an old set of videos that Layne made after their "My Shot" video that shows his process for creating drums in his home studio, and how he records voice (using Eli). If you're curious to see this part of their process, search on YT for 1) How To Create Vocal Percussion featuring VoicePlay - Full Sail University, and 2) How To Isolate Vocals featuring VoicePlay - Full Sail University

The camera is called a Steady Cam. Voiceplay, Geoff and Pattycake Productions use them all the time. It's less tiring for the camera people from having to hold the heavy camera constantly making better videos. The zombie on the floor is Kathy. The doll Layne kicked is Greta The Gruesome. Their makeup artist Rick Underwood made her face look like Kathy's in case it was seen. It was Kathy's idea for Layne to kick her (doll). Rick suggested the zombie infection to Geoff. Geoff loved the idea so much he rearranged the video.

Most of their behind the scenes videos are only available on Patreon, and probably shouldn’t be reacted to anyway. But the closest you might get and enjoy are interviews with Geoff and Layne on The Charismatic Voice’s KZbin page. Layne especially went through a good break down of his arranging on Pro Tools for their Classical Chaos piece which you can only imagine how intensive that was with 12 songs, five vocalists and a whole lot of “Laynebrain” insanity haha. Well worth the watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eanLo2aZisl3qZYsi=AouB4aNrJ6Q4fVKY He also did the Moana medley with Elizabeth too. Love your reactions. Such fun!

Pretty sure VoicePlay filmed their last year's Christmas release (Mean Girls' Jingle Bell Rock) with Tony Wakim's phone because their usual camera guy couldn't make it. It is still a flawless (and hilarious) video! Also filmed at Pattycake Productions (co-owned by Tony and Layne) like most of their videos.

This cover has been in the works for several years, with Omar Cardona the original choice for collaborator, but they couldn't make the schedules work out. Makeup was by Rick Underwood and Renette Feren. The "progressive zombie infection" was Rick's idea. Having a carrot as part of Layne's zombie look was Geoff's idea. Kathy Castellucci is the zombie that bites Layne. It was her idea, during setup for the shoot, to have Layne kick "her" away. The doll Layne kicks resembles Kathy's character thanks to Rick Underwood's magic and is from Spirit Halloween. They call her Greta the Gruesome (actually, she's Little Greta and Kathy is Big Greta). Fun fact: once he becomes a full-fledged zombie, Geoff never blinks when on screen. Ed Boyer does their audio mixing. Each member records their own tracks (often multiple tracks each), they're sent to whomever is the arranger/lead for the particular video (In this case, it's Geoff), he gets back to them with any notes/retakes needed, then everything is sent to Ed for mixing, going back and forth until they are happy with the final product. When needed for a shoot, Matt Hutchens is their usual stedicam operator and Andrew Cox is his assistant/focus puller. This is shot at PattyCake Productions (studio owned by Layne and Tony), using their props, augmented by suggestions from Kathy, using lighting owned by PattyCake, VoicePlay, and Geoff, all programmed by Eli. The door J. None tries to run out is the actual back door of PattyCake Productions. You can always check out the video credits in the description.

The closest we're likely to get to watch them record is two videos they did last year, VoicePlay Loop "Choose Your Fighter," and then Return to Sender. Each guy films himself recording his tracks, then the arranger edits them together. No theatrics or make-up or whatever, just them in each guy's studio. Featured guests often record with the arranger, like we see José recording with Geoff in the outro of Drunken Sailor, if they don't have their own studio setup.

Voiceplay doesn’t have a ton of BTS stuff available that isn’t paid Patreon content (their Patreon stuff is fantastic, for anyone interested though, definitely worth signing up for!). If you want to see how they normally record their vocals, I would suggest checking out the Loop videos they did last year - 1st - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJzSoZaFfLtkjac and 2nd - kzbin.info/www/bejne/earVd4iGedlpgMk . For clarity, these are not how they normally *arrange* music, just a fun game they are playing, but it does show each of them recording their vocals at home with their personal set ups, which *is* normally how they record. As far as actual Behind the Scenes videos, the only ones I know of that are public are these two for This Is Halloween from 4 years ago - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKC0dJ-mfq2Cfrs kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZapopWdZ6-Cp7c

So you were talking about their insane production quality. If you look in the description, they are usually good at giving credit where it is due. For this one, they list Ed Boyer for audio mix but they didnt really list the audio production which is normally finallized by Geoff or Layne. I know during the VID of 19, they all started recording their own parts and even did some of the production individually then Geoff and/or Layne would put the final polish on it. Really not sure how they are doing things these days but I have watched an interview with Layne and he opened his computer and showed a little of his process for building the percussion tracks. It's kind of cool to watch the guy work. Hit me up if you want the link, You have my number.
