This is an exceptional individual and soldier, this is the first video I have seen where a white soldier actually praised the 761st Tank Battalion (Color) unit that fought straight for 183 days in continuous combat. The US Army failed to recognize the accomplishments of the 761st Tank Battalion. His ability to recalled specific events was remarkable. Thank you capturing this important part of ETO history for the future generations.

I am embarrassed to say that I did not know much if anything about the 17th airborne prior to this video. There have been a good number of movies about world war 2 made. Band of Brothers, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, etc. What Mr. Magill shared is more than enough to make an unbelievable movie, without the artistic "sweetening" that producers like to add. After what he and his troops went through during the war makes what he continued to do after the war all the more impressive. God bless him, and all those that stayed behind so that we may move ahead. Thank you Larry for doing the interview and Mr. Horton for sponsoring it.

Just unbelievable work Larry, John describes his experiences so well that even 75 years later he still gets incredibly emotional about it. God bless you my friend for doing the work that you are undertaking It MUST be compulsory viewing for teenagers in schools today. For the Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children England mourns for her dead across the sea, Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres, There is music in the midst of desolation And glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow, They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again, They sit no more at familiar tables of home, They have no lot in our labour of the daytime, They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires and hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the night. As the stars shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. - Written by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

How old was John in this interview? My Mom and Dad both served in WWII. They got married in France, he was a pilot, and she was a nurse. I wish there were more guys like you documenting the war while they were still alive. There are precious few of these Second World War vets alive now, and it is so important that our children hear these stories. Unfortunately, it was not common for these WWII veterans to talk about what happened to them in the war. It just wasn't spoken about.

John was 85 at the time of his interview with me in 2008. He passed away at 90 in 2013. I miss him dearly. 1500 World War II veterans were passing away every day when I started my work in 2003. It's been 20 years. There were about 4 1/2 million of them alive then. Today I would dare say they're less than 200,000 alive if that. My work has become very bittersweet having lost so many of my Veterans. Thank God for the success I've had having these Veterans open up and talk to me. I provide a very nonthreatening environment for them to tell their stories. They know that I care and will listen to their stories. They trust me. For this I am very humbled. I agree we must be reminded that freedom has a cost, the men of these generations past, are the ones that gave their lives for us to have 3:59 this wonderful country of the United States of America, and definitely, these men are not losers and suckers, like Mr. Donald J Trump set a one time, my grandfather, and probably fathers and grandfathers of other people in America. Those parents might be turning in their graves, these veterans that sacrifice their lives, now to See insurrectionist roaming in our federal buildings, fascists in the House of Representatives, in the Senate, Donald J Trump, the Hitler of his times, it’s so ironic that he is German, not to say that all Germans are bad no, I’m not saying that, but Donald J Trump is a spitting image of him, and Mussolini himself. God bless America and we must hold this country together. 3:37
