A graduate of Lincoln High School and Maryland Teacher’s College at Bowie, Ms. Harris spent the bulk of her career teaching primary education at the Maryland School for the Deaf. A charter member of the AARCH Society, she is called “AARCH’s historian”. Ms. Harris is known for her research of such topics as the US Colored Troops and her development of displays and presentations that have highlighted the African American history of Frederick County and Black culture and artifacts. Mary Harris has had a lifelong interest in the history that came down from her parents and her family’s long association with the Adamstown region. She was born at Montevue Hospital when it was the only available maternity ward for African American women in the county.
In recognition of Black History Month the Maryland Room at the C. Burr Artz Public Library will be sharing selections from their Oral History Collections throughout the month that speak to civil rights and the African American experience in Frederick County.
