The historical context of Sura 9:29 finds Muhammad preparing for a military expedition against the Byzantine Empire in 630, two years before his ordinary death of a fever in 632. Indeed, some scholars regard Sura 9 as the last sura to be revealed from on high. Therefore, it sets many policies for Muslims today, and is often interpreted as abrogating or canceling previous verses, even peaceful ones. Muhammad heard a rumor that the Byzantines amassed an army some 700 miles to the north in Tabuk (northern Arabia today) in order to attack Islam, so he led an army of 30,000 holy warriors to counter-strike preemptively. However, the Byzantines failed to materialize, so Muhammad’s belief in the false rumor was misguided and his expedition was fruitless, except he managed to extract (extort) agreements from northern Christian Arab tribes that they would not attack him and his community. An army of 30,000 soldiers from the south must have deeply impressed the northern tribes, so they posed no real threat to Islam. They are the ones who paid the "protection" tax mentioned in Sura 9:29 (and so do tribes and cities after Muhammad’s death). Therefore, Muhammad’s forced tax was aggressive and hence unjust, not defensive and hence just. Muhammad’s military expedition qualifies as an Islamic Crusade long before the European ones. After all, in 638, only six years after Muhammad’s death, Muslim armies conquer Jerusalem. Today, Muslims should never again complain about European Crusades, unless they first come to grips with their own. What the ten reasons mean for us today These ten aspects of violence that have burrowed into the hemorrhaging heart of early Islam have eight implications for us today. The first three are theological; the rest are practical. The theological implications are as follows: First, as each reason in this article has hinted at and the links explain more thoroughly, Christ never, ever engaged in such violence. For example, he never assassinated opponents, whipped adulterers, cut off the hands of thieves, or launched his own Crusades (what the Medieval Europeans did is not foundational to Christianity). Christ expresses the love of God. Therefore, Christians and all fair-minded persons have the right to question whether the true God would reveal the Quran when it contains such violent verses that conveniently support Muhammad’s violence, whereas the New Testament does not have such violence. Second, Muslims believe that the New Testament is corrupted, whereas the Quran is inerrant. Even if we assume only for the sake of argument that these claims are true (but they actually are not), then why would reasonable seekers of the truth prefer the "pure" but violence-filled Quran over the "corrupted" but peaceful New Testament? Before Muhammad is allowed to throw around unsubstantiated charges about alleged New Testament corruption, he and his Quran must pass a down-to-earth test regarding his dubious, violent practices. But he and it fail the test badly, as this demonstrates, whereas Christ and the New Testament pass with a perfect score. Therefore, if Muhammad is so wrong about down-to-earth matters like whipping adulterers and cutting off the hands of thieves and beating wives, then he is likely wrong about unresearched accusations of New Testament corruption-and factually he is wrong. Third, since Muhammad who claims divine guidance is so wrong about practical matters, why should we believe him about theoretical matters like the deity of Christ and the Trinity, both of which he denies? Clearly, he was not divinely guided in practical matters because the true God would not degrade religion by endorsing such gruesome violence six hundred years after Christ came-the historical span is critical. Christ and the New Testament do not have even one example of such violence. Again, if Muhammad first fails the down-to-earth test, then he likely fails the theological or theoretical test-we have no reason to believe him in such high doctrines, especially since he was no theologian and his revelations are now empirically suspect.

Yes many many problems in doing this cherry picked statistical analysis with many factors which severely skew the interpretation and even the categorising of the statistics here. Clearly this was done with a very strong pro islam bias to get more people on board to this chameleon of a religion.

Yes, the author takes that in consideration, he takes into account earth population and the percentage of every civilization throughtout history (0-2008). Read it, it's only one section of the book, the whole study is only about 20 pages or so.

I think something to consider might also be the fact that civilizations with high levels of large massacres might also be related to the density of population in which those civilizations exhist and the high level of military competition and technological advancement that ensues. China and Western Europe and India being well reknown for relatively high densities of population throughout history thus capable of larger war scales

He casts the stigma of violence on other religions, although the wars in the geographical area of those religions were POLITICALLY motivated (NO religious ideology), the religion being ONLY a pretext. The difference I pointed out is that ONLY Islam preaches war in its very teachings. NO other religion does such a thing. Islam never denounces other religions but preaches its own and truth of nature that lies in laws of nature and stresses upon the one omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient Who is creater of whole universe. Other religion believers accept Islam as a superior ideology of life but person like me or Paul or any brainy accept Islam as a absolute truth after assessing the true nature of things. History tells that man fought war as you spoke rightly, for the cause of his self conceived goodness e.g. territory, influence, descendents, wealth, resources, power and so on based on self preservation. And still be predicted to be on for such grounds. Interesting findings. I am not a Christian, Jew nor an atheist, but as an academic empirical researcher (in social sciences), I would like to comment on these findings from a scientific/academic perspective. The findings are indeed interesting. But in my opinion, they are interesting as they raise the need to dig deeper and try to understand why certain areas e.g. Europe/Soviet Union, countries or civilizations have caused or initiated the most of amount of wars or the most violence; but not to draw conclusions about which religion is the most violent as the video sometimes makes. In my humble opinion, the findings suffer from many limitations to draw conclusion about which relgion is the most violent as the catchy title of the video asks. First, it is difficult, yet very important to identify the "real/true" motive behind a violent act such as a war. In other words, it is important to understand whether it was due to material motives, ideologocal motives other than religions, or religious motives. If the motive such as the motives behind WWI were not religious, then it would be very misleading and unfair to claim that a religion is violent because of that. What makes it even harder is that often, violent acts were often undertaken under the name of religion but for purely material motives, which would also make the conclusion and judgement on the religion itself misleading and unfair. Second, I find it very important to control for certain factors/variables especially power e.g. political power, economic power, military power or even the size of the population, or at least to show their distribution (as it was done for the number of deaths causedl) before drawing any conclusions. This is because, especially back in the days, often the ones with the most power were the most violent and aggressive; simply because they are more powerful. It is more common for a big and powerful country to invade a smaller and weaker one rather than the other way round. Thus, the reason for countries/regions with certain religions not to be violent might not be due to their religion being less violent, but because they did not have much power to do so. The question is, if they had as much power, would they be less violent? May be a better way to try to answer the question of the video is to study how the different religions or atheism were spread or have become dominant in their regions e.g. how did Christianity become the dominant religion in Europe/USA, how did Buddhism become dominant in some parts of Asia and how did Islam become dominant in the Middle East? Is it by using violent or non-violent measures? I also find such empirical evidence without a deeper study of each religion's books/scriptures and doctrines lacking meaning and highly limited to answer the question the video is asking. I truly appreciate the effort done though.

Never trust statistics. As most of the wars with historical written records were between European countries and these would be grouped in the "Christian" column, I would expect the largest number to be there. We should also not forget that WW1 and 2 had more deaths (military and civilian) than most previous wars put together. The whole topic is far more complex than presented here.

Actually, if the "standards" in categorizing wars like you mentioned above were to be applied on all wars disregard of religions, almost all of the wars that involved Islam can be categorized as caused by political factors instead of religion factors. There were very few wars that the real and sole cause of the conflict was religion, like the crusades, or wars during early Islam. Even the wars during the first and second caliphs of Islam could be attributed to the meddling of the Persian empire at the time that started to see the united Arabs as a threat to them by using their proxy states. So in a nutshell, by using the same definition that you may want to apply to refute the statistics, that would make it even less wars that could be attributed directly to Islam.
