The Concerto in F Major Op. 6 No. 2 by Arcangelo Corelli, complete. Performed on original instruments by the early music ensemble Voices of Music. 4K UHD video from the Steffani Stabat Mater concert, March 2015, San Francisco.
300 years ago, Corelli's concertos, Op. 6, were published in 1714 in Amsterdam: these works dramatically affected the style of the baroque concerto for the next generation of composers. The reception of this magnificent collection, one of the crown jewels of baroque instrumental music, was in no small part due to the music publishing boom which began around 1690, as well as Corelli's signature set of violin sonatas, Opus 5, of which as Michael Talbot notes "at least 42 editions had appeared by 1800". The wide availability of Corelli's works created an international Corellian style. The concertos are written in an expanded trio sonata form, in which the two solo violins and continuo provide the core ensemble within the larger tutti framework.
Corelli composed his concerto in F Major without the usual three or four sections, but twelve sections (many of which are asymmetrical); two of these twelve are simply cadence markers consisting of one or two bars, the the remaining twelve movements are numbered in the video. The work begins with an upbeat flourish which then serves as anchor points for the following imitative sections. The wistful adagios provide an excellent foil to the persistent rhythms of the allegros.
The Musicians and their Instruments

I'll never forget how I fell in love with Corelli's music. I was fifteen and looking for new music to listen to. Before that I listened mostly to Bach and Vivaldi concertos. I read that this Corelli guy is a big deal in how he changed the way people played the violin as an instrument. So while I walked my dog that evening, I listened on my iPod to an album that contained concertos 1-6 by the capella istropolitana ensemble. I had been feeling down at the time, dealing with personal issues, but the moment the fourth movement of concerto No.2 began I brightened up and knew I liked Corelli's music. From then on I would listen to his music often: while riding my bike to school in the morning, doing homework, doing nothing, going to sleep, working. Even if I'm not actively listening to music, I still hear these concertos and his Op.5 sonatas echoing in mind, helping me to make sense of this confusing world, and to rationalise my fears. I see myself listening to Corelli's music for another seven years, and likely the rest of my life.

Renowned violinist and teacher, Arcangelo Corelli spent his entire career in Rome. He composed mainly for the theater, the church and in the service of cardinals, but also powerful patrons. The twelve Concerti Grossi published in Amsterdam in 1714, a year after his death and constitute his last opus. Although they were published posthumously, they had already existed since 1709. In Corelli's works, the concertino consists of two violins and a cello, with the harpsichord providing the harmonies on the bass line (bass continuo). In the twelve Concerti Grossi which make up Op. 6 by Corelli, the concertino trio also plays in unison with the ripieno, making these concertos convertible into trio sonatas simply by leaving out the ripieno players and making some modifications for the viola part. The function of the ripieno is therefore more to add a fourth dimension of sonority to the solo trio than to contrast with it. By observing exactly this opposition or rivalry of slow and fast, loud and soft, of the fullness of the concerto grosso and the delicacy of the concertino, the ear is ravaged by a singular astonishment, just like the eye by the contrast of light and shadow. Another imitated aspect of Corelli's work is his distribution of forces in the Concerti Grossi of Opus 6. The etymology of the term concerto is perhaps debatable, somewhere between the concept of separate forces « in conflict » or « playing together ». The contrast between a group of soloists (concertino) and the entire orchestra (ripieno or concerto grosso) is fundamental to the genre. As Corelli biographer Peter Allsop states, « The telling distinction in Corelli's title is not 'concerto' but 'grosso' because the composer's works are primarily orchestral ». The twelve Concerti which form this opus constitute in fact a form of apogee of this musical form in the Baroque era, at the same time as a testimony to the exceptional talent as a violinist and conductor possessed by this Italian composer. Arcangelo Corelli affirms the independence of the violin with the desire to remain within the limits of the vocal range and a concern for simplicity in the exploitation of the resources of the instrument to which he refuses unnecessary virtuosity. *Lucien*

if i might hazard a guess, im pretty sure thats "baroque tuning" which is pretty much a halfstep below regular modern tuning, which means that if you got a peice of baroque music written in C major, if you played it at sounding pitch on modern tuned instruments, it would actually be in B major, and so on.
