Bach's genius is indisputable. Parts of this concerto are so inspired and inspiring, so fiery but exquisitely controlled, the voicings and phrases, the complexity and interpolation, and astonishing coherencies, everything about it's architecture and beauty, are truly fantastic in the most extreme sense of the word. In all the billions of people of all time, there was only one Bach.

I love No 54, how he creates so much from so little. My fav is the old B/W BBC footage with Glen Gould speaking about him, the piece, and then the beautiful singing. It's just a piece of magic I am so so lucky to have on my PC. We are all so lucky right now to have this much accessibility which may not be available to any of us at any point in our blind future. Peace and love to all.

Baroque is my favorite genre of music, and this is one of my favorite Baroque pieces. For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a German nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.
@VoicesofMusic4 жыл бұрын
The concertos were not lost and they were performed. For example, Brandenburg 5 was played as a piano concerto in the classical period.
@@VoicesofMusic :"...The concertos were found in the archives in 1849 and published the following year, 100 years after Bach's death. Much of Bach's instrumental music, especially from his Köthen years is known to have been lost so we're doubly lucky that the Brandenburgs ever reached us."
@Caroline12614 жыл бұрын
@@VoicesofMusic The problem with Bach’s gift to Christian Ludwig was that he hadn’t really thought at all about the recipient. The court at Berlin wasn’t as musical as Prince Leopold’s establishment in Köthen and there simply weren’t the musicians capable of playing these concertos. The manuscript was put away in a cupboard, unused and forgotten, and no payment or acknowledgement was sent to Bach. The concertos were found in the archives in 1849 and published the following year, 100 years after Bach’s death. Much of Bach’s instrumental music, especially from his Köthen years is known to have been lost so we’re doubly lucky that the Brandenburgs ever reached us. It’s easy to wonder how many other masterpieces have been lost but rather than mourn what we don’t have, I’ll continue to take my dose of happiness from those six sunny, fortunate concertos. from : bachtrack.com/article-brandenburgs-baroque-portrait#:~:text=The%20concertos%20were%20found%20in,the%20Brandenburgs%20ever%20reached%20us.

"Everytime I hear it, it's a revelation of a kind of ordered miracle. I regard music as the most representative of all art forms, because music speaks of everything... Everything in a musical piece is a part that exists in relationship to a harmonious whole, and it has its own intrinsic reason for *being,* and it *speaks* of meaning. I don't think people can live without music for that reason, and it's also opaque to cynicism... I don't think that's true of any other art form; I never met anyone cynical about music." - Jordan Peterson on this piece.
