The good thing to come out of this, is I hope there are more kurt angle retrospective articles and podcasts. He has a fascinating career worth analyzing. I unironically think the perc angle meme will make his legacy greater. Kind of like how American psycho became a cult classic years after release.

Angle vs Benoit at the 2003 Royal Rumble is a 5 star match. Just look at the standing ovation it gets.

A match getting a standing ovation doesn’t make it 5 stars. Many matches that weren’t 5 stars resulted in the loser getting a standing ovation like Benoit. That match isn’t 5 stars, but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t great.

Definitely not a technical classic but the Shane vs Angle Street Fight at the 2001 King of the Ring PPV is easily a 5 star brawl.

Kurt Angle is the second greatest wrestler of all time by Bret Harts Scale, 11/10 in ring, 10/10 look, 10/10 promo. Greatest is Randy Savage, 10/10 in ring, 11/10 look, 12/10 promo. I’d say Steve Austin is tied with Angle for second.

i wouldn't say wrestling is getting better. But lets face it, Meltzer loves japanese wrestling and doesn't really care for wwe. He watched every wwe ppv between wrestlemania in 1997 and Money in the Bank 2011 and didn't see a single 5 star match. Even now, wwe matches only started getting 5 stars once aew and new japan were getting more than 5. Meltzer likes big moves, high spots, stiff strikes and no selling as well as any matches featuring his favourites/ guys who feed him stories. Story telling, logic and psychology are now lost on him, which is odd since they clearly weren't when he was watching Bret vs Owen

How many shows from Japan have you watched? Could you give me examples of Meltzer rated 5 star matches in Japan that are reliant on high spots, no selling and "big moves" whatever that means and has no storytelling/psychology, or at least very little of it. I'm intrigued.

The Angle never having a 5 star match by Meltzer discourse makes me miss the idiots who would complain that the HBK vs Taker WM matches weren't rated the full five. I honestly can't think of a Kurt Angle match that I have ever given 5 stars.

Angle would prolly be somewhere in my top 50. I'd go 5 on the Benoit Rumble match, that's about it. he Smackdown 6 period was lit tho. Tons of 4 star TV matches then, imo.
