Nothingface is probably my favorite metal album of all time. I have listened to it for 27(?) years now. Never gets old. No subpar tracks to skip. I have dug what I have heard so far (of the prereleased tracks) of this album. Can't wait to give it a full listen.

Thomas Horine I completely agree! That album opened my mind to possibilities that I had previously thought were too far out of the mainstream of thrash metal of the day. I was a kid that grew up listening to Kiss, and Sabbath, discovered Maiden and Priest in the early 80’s, and was immediately a thrash fan when I first heard Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Metal Church, but also had listened to a lot of Jazz from the mid 70’s on. Until that album, I could never see any hope of a connection between these disparate musical forms, both of which I loved at the time, and still love to this day. A while later they created one of my favorite songs of all time: their remake (not cover) of Astronomy Domine. An underrated and under appreciated band, I’m definitely looking forward to hearing this album.

As previously mentioned in the comments, this album (like Target Earth) is 'KillingDimensionFace'! Plenty of classic 80s era elements but forged in a fresh approach. Back in 1987 I heard my first Voivod album - Dimension Hatross & it blew my fucking mind. I was already into metal but this was from another planet. Then I heard Killing Technology & my brain exploded. Voivod are true innovators.

Every Voivod album is a challenge. Especially from Hatross on up. It continues with Target Earth but adds a bit more metallic elements. I’d put this somewhere between Hatross and Nothingface. Every Voivod album is a new experience and takes time to fully absorb. I’m a big Voivodian and there isn’t an album they’ve done I’ve disliked. But this one and Target Earth have been a nice return to their classic mid era sound which is great. I don’t think they will ever go back to the pure aggression of their first 3 ( my favorite era) but this still is great.

Been with them since 'Rrooaarr' and 'Killing Technology'. This is one of their best I agree with your placement in between Hatross and Nothingface though Chuy certainly brings some eye opening guitarwork. Overall a great album that lives up to their original vision. Not as much a fan of the Jasonic era as the reviewer.
@metalneanderthal
@metalneanderthal 6 жыл бұрын
Martin Popoff ok I guess I was a little vague. For me Voivod really has 3 distinct sounds. Well maybe 4. The first era is heavy, dirty thrash ( my favorite) then I would say the next 2 are progressive thrash then by Angel Rat and Outer limits it they were full on prog rock. That’s basically the big 3 Voivod sounds. The 4? I guess would be the Jason era stuff, Progressive punk. Every other album I feel is a bit of a different take on those 3 eras. The Forest albums were in a way a throw back to the first 3 albums. Just a bit slower. The last 3 Voivod albums are in my eyes basically borrowing heavily from Nothingface and Hatross. They have the same speed and progressive elements. I’d say this new one is a perfect combination of Hatross and Nothingface.

Just don't find myself reaching for the Newstead or Forest stuff when I need my VoiVod fix. I liked them when they were 'current' releases but overall, I doubt I've listened to either version in the last 10 years. Love your reviews though, what I've seen of them, I'm kind of new to your channel. \m/

Old Goat the Antichrist I can listen to the first 4 any day of the week. Nothingface, Target Earth, and this new one all have a very similar feel to me and a good combination of thrash and Prog. As far as the Eric albums? I actually really like them because they are closest thing we had that have had a strong metallic element. Everything else they’ve done I pop in when I’m in the mood for some Vod but just want something a a little outside my box which is straight thrash/Speed and death metal.

Here's my view on the new Voivod album. I really love it. I've only listened to it twice so far but I think it may be one of their best since Dimension Hatross. Having been a huge fan ever since hearing War And Pain back in '84, Voivod has continually been one of the most innovative bands, metal or otherwise, and this album is another instance of that. From the opening track, Obsolete Beings, to the albums closer, Sonic Mycelium, (there's a 2 cd version of this album that has stickers, a mediabook, and the 2nd cd includes the great Post Society ep and some killer live tracks recorded earlier this year), this album delivers all the things one would expect from a Voivod album, with the usual dissonant guitars, frenetic time changes, slightly odd phrasing in the arrangements, vocals that range from screaming to clean, almost straight up singing. If you're ever in the position to catch them live, don't miss out as they are an incredible live band. It's been almost 35 years since the release of War And Pain in '84, and throughout the line up changes and stylistic changes, they've always held on to the things that make them such an original sounding band. In 2005, as Martin mentioned, they suffered a huge loss when original guitarist (and one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting), Denis "Piggy" D'amour, passed away, succumbing to cancer. I thought it would be over for them, as I thought, due to his most original style of playing and songwriting, that they would never find a suitable replacement for him. I was proven wrong when they added to their ranks Martyr guitarist Dan Mongrain aka "Chewy", who I first saw (on video) standing in for another local band, DBC (Dead Brain Cells) guitarist Gerry Ouelette, who passed away in Nov. 1994. Anyway, I'm getting off track here, but my overall thoughts on the album are that it is a great addition to their catalog, featuring all the hallmarks that make Voivod such a great and again, original sounding band, metal or otherwise. It fits right in with their overall concept, which has developed since War And Pain and keeps on progressing album to album. If you're already a fan of the band I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the quality of the songwriting and particularly the guitar sound and playing, as this is the 2nd album to not feature any of Piggy's music (the first being Target Earth. The band's last studio album to feature Piggy's music, Infini, was made up of riffs and unfinished songs that Piggy, who knew he was on borrowed time, had put onto tape for the band to create the album from). This album's guitar is all Chewy, who again has done a fantastic job of recreating the feel and sound of Piggy's totally original sound and technique, while also maintaining his own stamp and sound as a very accomplished guitarist.Ok, I've really written way more than I planned on but, suffice it to say this is a great album and worth picking up, whether you're a longtime fan or someone new to the Voivod fold. I give this album a 5 out of 5 stars.Now go buy it and get lost in it's pseudo psychedelic metal....you won't want to come back to reality.....Voivod's reality is so much more interesting.

This album for me was without a doubt a 5/5, not at firsth though, it took me several months exploring new music for me to come back to it and fully enjoy it and I gotta say that I am LOVING it. I really like this version of Voïvod with Target Earth, Post Society and now The Wake because it has this weird proggy feeling about it but still kinda raw, dirty and thrashy. I also thought the guitars at times to be kinda psychedelic, dont know if its just me 🤔 And at the last song "Sonic Mycelium" there is a throwback to "Luminous Jack" from 1993's The Outer Limits which is just awesome for a fan who adores that album in particular.

Hey Banger tv, you said that after the patrean had reached the 5000goal you would do one "mainstream" review and one that is dedicated to the undergroung! Now, Uriah Heep, Deicide and Voivod are not undergroung bands (maybe not even Krisiun), that means you owe as two undergound bands in a row! Thank you and keep up the good work you guys! If you like Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, Target Earth or even Phobos then this album is for YOU! This is a conceptual, dissonant as hell, bulky beast with a million twists and and turns. In a certain way it seems almost like an intersection point of all those records without sounding dated. That being said it could easily be mistaken to be solely a step forward regarding the trail Target Earth started when it's more than that. It's almost a sum of what makes Voivod sound like Voivod. Yes, it's a complex and schizophrenic record (nothing new on the the band's catalogue btw). But don't get fooled: if you're really into the aforementioned records these track will almost immediately claim their due space in your head (albeit their intricate structure). And yes... there's a dose Killing Joke - mainly their first 2 records - involved in this. To be honest I hear that influence throughout tha majority of the tracks but if you're a Voivod die hard you would know that source of inspiration has been in Voivod's recipe at least since Dimension Hatross (Psychic Vacuum, Brain Scan). So... if you like THIS kind of Voivod take my word: go buy it NOW! it's easily one of the best records of the year in it's genre. Enjoy.

I think that long standing voivod fans would class Dimension hatross, nothingface and angelrat as their pinnacle albums where the first two mentioned are truly 'prog' and with high complexity. This new album has thrown them, and me back there. I feel we're listening to Hatross part 2, and i am very happy. Chewy is a stunning guitarist who's taken the spirit of piggy's style further and created an amazing, challenging listen. This is high level technical guitar work. They should be very proud, because the die hards are loving this. Splendid, complex and engaging. A++++

This album is really too good for a band of this age and with all the changements that happens in the last ten years.The work made Daniel Mongrain replacing Piggy is unbelievable. Nobody could replace Piggy but he did. It’s even more incredible when you think he composed every song. Snake is still inspired and with a unique singing, Away is definitely one of the best drummer in the world and hats off to Rocky for fitting perfectly in Blacky’s shoes. The Wake as Target Earth is a come back to the sound of the Nothingface area with more complex structures and prog elements than in the Jason Newsted period. So maybe the minor negative point I could give to this album is that there is no really step forward for the band compared to some older albums. The albums from the golden age with Snake were all different, making each time a step in another direction. The Eric Forrest area was a strong regression in my opinion but i think i need to give it a second chance now. The Newsted area was interesting cause they came back to the original sound but with a much more tight and simplified music, with very few Thrash or Prog elements. So it’s a paradox feeling, cause in a way it’s very cool to see the band returning to the sound everybody loves in Voivod, the Nothingface, Dimension Hatross sound but in the other way i miss a bit the challenging side they had before. But I think this band stays unpredictable so maybe there will be surprises with the next one! Longue vie à Voivod 👊🏼

tbh, I think Negatron is very good now that I've listened to it these past weeks. a super heavy sound is just something they had to try and good god did Piggy write some monster riffs for it. It just crushes, it's elite in it's genre.The vocals are of the throaty hardcore kind, like Obituary or even Sepultura and are a perfect fit for these tunes. More over, the dystopian sci-fi sound (Voïvod's signature) is still present and acounted for. I really enjoyed my recent listen, it gave me a new appreciation for the record.

Got my LP today. Good stuff. I will see them next month. By the way, I loved the 500 metal albums and 500 metal songs-books, Martin. I contributed to the album book and am proud to say that my vote is the reason that Metal heart is a better album than Danzig. :-P

As a non Voivod fan, the album is really cool if you like progressive music. Vocals get a little repetitive throughout the whole of the album, but I came for the guitar and the guitar tone is awesome. I agree about Clutch, that new album is missing something... a producer maybe?

With the dissolution of his depression, Snake made a fundamental step forward to his true nature as a writer. Lyric wise, the album ends up with a happy ending which is a major cornerstone on how he´s seeing things now. Lyrically there´s a lot of spiritual content packed on the album. I find that just awesome! Btw: super review! I´d give it 4,5 out of 5. Just saying.

I don't understand the challenge part. The production is cleaner than most of Voivod's earlier albums, and the music is more tuneful to my ears. Are we supposed to think switching between proggy and thrashy is challenging, in 2018? Or is the challenge in hearing it all in one album, instead of across albums as we have most of Voivod's career? Honestly, I don't understand.

best album since "The Outer Limits" record, maybe even since "Nothingface" album....... songwriting, musicianship, production, lyrics...... nothing to criticise here really...... I thought "Cruel Magic" from SataN will end up being hands down the best metal record of 2018...... but this is probably even a bit better...... seems like "alien superband" from outer space is BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragonlord definitely isn't Symphonic Power Metal, it's very much Symphonic Black Metal by the book, and it's actually not bad. Fans of old Dimmu Borgir would do well to check it out.

"If you are new to Voivod, this album might be a challenge to you" - hahahhaaah, if you're listening to run-o-the-mill copypasted commercial metal, which regurgitates the same shit over and over again. This album is easily the best album of the decade. Abolute, undisputed masterpiece.

Voivod is hands down my favorite band. This guy does not know early Voivod. This album is great and is not a challenge for Voivod fans like he says. btw Enslaved's Below the Lights - Ruun era reminds me a lot of Voivod's Dimension Hatross - Nothing Face era. It's good stuff if you don't mind it a little blackened. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2nXpHWFpJiapKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJfNn4ecfNNod6c
