As a lifetime musician who's over the hill at 70 something, I remember that kid on the street playing an upside down 5 gallon bucket with drum sticks. That's where creativity lives, simple tools with the spirit to produce something spectacular. The Volca FM2 is where I'm going, as a guitarist I need toys, but minimalistic ones, already have the Volca drum which is a huge little box.

Volca keys and volca drum, uno drum, microfreak, stereo fx pedals, stereo PA system, Maschine studio, Beatstep Pro, 3d MIDI fighter, rc 505 loopstation , midi footcontrollers, countless vsts and mini lab ….cluttering my mind. I watched hundreds of gear videos this year so I am also guilty of gear acquisition syndrome in hopes of making better music. I did learn that one major VST and some MIDI controllers make me happier than a room full of gear, but knobs and sliders can make me excited sometimes and inspired a bit. Love this improvised jam, showing how recording an ever evolving loop, can be done on the FM. Just got my Volca FM2, and absolutely loving it. Works so nicely with my Roland J-6 and T-8. Running MIDI out of FM2, into J-6 creates beautiful layers, for looping heaven, and T-8 adds the beat. Next, will try MIDI out of J-6, into FM2.

Nice again Holger, ive done a few audience attended gigs using just the volca keys, also one using only the Dreadbox Nyx and one with just the Microfreak, they were all enjoyable. Well yes, of course. If someone told a person the best way to learn guitar would be to also try to learn flute, piano and drums at the same time, they'd obviously be skeptical. The real reason people do this with electronic music is the constant prodding to buy more gear coming from the companies. The message, so often, from tech is - buy this from us and it will make you X (where X is 'more creative', or 'a better musician' or ... etc etc). Apple have made society incrementally more irritating - and often abusive - by selling the idea that buying an iPhone will turn you into a photographer / videographer. It won't. What it will most likely do is turn you into an invasive dilettante with an ego issue. If you really want to learn to be a photographer, you'd be much better off spending £5 on an old film camera and actually getting intimate with it, learning to value each frame and the moments of life caught therein. Because - as you so rightly point out here - it's pushing against the limitations that really makes us creative. And as possibilities becomes less and less limited, it's on us to provide our own discipline.
@Volcaniced Жыл бұрын
Oh I like your comment as it reflects exactly what I think and feel too. And yes, I was also exposed to the pressure that the industry is putting on our customers, buy more and you'll be better equipped. Better equipped and definitely better than everyone else who is not equipped. But nobody in the industry tells you: buy an instrument and learn to play it. Why? Because industry doesn't work that way anymore. It used to be different. You bought a synth and it was really expensive and then you had fun with it and above all you had the feeling that it was worth spending time on because the device had a certain value for me. Maybe I had to save for it for a long time or it was a gift I've been waiting for a long time. Today, oh .... today everything is different. Today you can emulate almost anything with VST alone. But I am against that. I like the real, the pure, the manual operation, the feeling, the feeling. And since none of us are millionaires, let's keep it simple. That's why I decided to do as much as possible with as little as possible.
@ukbloke28 Жыл бұрын
@@Volcaniced Yes. It's also a contributory reason at to why so much of the great art and music is made by poor people. A long time ago, I hacked a handheld I had and was able to put unlimited games on it. What happened was that I restlessly flicked through them all, didnt really commit to anything and ended up not playing it at all. I never did it again. I feel for young kids now. The pace of media and the availability of technology due to Moore's law etc means they have insane amounts of possibility but a hugely inhibited focus due to context. We can see way too much. How to see less?
