It is potentially concerning if and when Mount Spurr erupts, due to the potential for widespread air traffic disruptions and heavy ashfall. However, Spurr is seemingly still quite far away from having a likelihood of erupting, hence its yellow rather than orange alert level.

Now, there's an advisory of a volcano MT Spurr....
@RetiredEE2 күн бұрын
@@AlternatedudeII if we do have several months before a potential eruption, that would give the government time to drill down a few miles to the area of earthquakes, and use a relatively low-yield device to relieve the pent-up strain. In the meantime, all flyable aircraft from Elmendorf must be relocated immediately to Eielson and AF Base-X.

I was on a flight to Anchorage when it blew, was sitting on the right side of the plane, pilot said something about it, but no one on the left side seemed excited. Unfortunately I am hard of hearing and didn’t realize that he said that Mt Spurr was erupting, so I missed seeing it, but our plane was one of the last to land in Anchorage for a while.

Get your respirators now Anchorage. ( I lived there a decade for college and while my father taught at University of Alaska now retired) Also watch ford motor company recommendations on running a car in volcano ash. You need to use compressed air can to blow out air filter on car. Get two extra. And get felt for air intake in car for vents in car. Use water on windshield not windshield wipers or windshield scratches. Go buy a respirator for elders or sickly ahead of time darlings.

Waiting for the last minute is a recipe for disaster yes. Buy what you can when you can little by little if we must. But some preparedness definitely offers some peace of mind! @erinmac4750

What kind of respirator? There are different kinds and grades from simple dust amelioration to Volatile Organic Vapour protection, full or partial face covering. Depends on the gas content and particle size. Even N-95 or N-99 cannot filter out the microparticles generated by combustion of any kind. I have an N-99 VOC mask which does pretty well. Anyway, not ragging on you - great suggestions - just wanted to augment and specify.

I am an aircraft mechanic at ANC airport. It is currently the 3rd busiest air cargo airport in the world, last i knew. The impact from a disturbance would be significant to trade. Since we are always getting mauled with flights, it would be a nice break IMHO.

While air passenger traffic is fairly nominal, air cargo traffic uses the Anchorage hub like no other airport in the world: any disruption there for more than a day or two will likely cause economic impacts to ripple worldwide.

I’ve been curious about the Double Glacier Volcano that’s just west of spurr and north of redoubt I wanna say , since it’s only been known of since 2002, and hasn’t erupted since discovery, there’s no timeline to get a sense of its eruption cycle , so I’m curious with the intense amount of melting permafrost and our the entire ecosystem not being able to really catch up, if we will see some of those volcanos make some activity :)

I could imagine if that thing erupted in the winter it would be a nightmare to clean up all that volcanic ash stuck in the snow and ice in multiple layers. Even worse would be spring time when it all melts leaving all the ash to blow around in the wind.

My wife and I were in Anchorage and Kodiak in the year 2000. I did see some of the ash from Mt. Spurr's 1993 eruption, more so in Kodiak than Anchorage. We took a sightseeing flight from Lake Hood over Palmer and up over the glaciers on the Chugach Mountains. It was a clear day, and on the way back I could see Spurr and Iliamna in the distance. It was easy to see how an eruption from there can affect Anchorage. Alaskans, we are thinking of you!
