its not just about weight but also rigidity. wheels will flex when cornering costing you camber. volks are very rigid as well as light due to press forging. the face of the wheel is forged and cleaned up with maching vs other cheaper forged wheels that are machined forged where they take a forged blank and machine out the whole wheel.

As I learned in engineering class, if you take the maximum amount of weight allowed for a pinewood derby car, and fix it all into the wheels, you will get an amazingly, horrifically, hilariously car that will take forever to come to a stop. I'm not sure how much of an effect 12lbs in weight savings has in terms of sprung/unsprung (I've seen 2:1 but I havent seen a derivation)... But the fact that those wheels are rotating means that saving 12 lbs total is probably more on the order of shaving almost 100 stationary pounds off the chassis of the car.
