of all the vids of these i've seen, you are literally the only one thats actually shown that you treated the rust properly..it set my ocd off when i see a vid and i don't know if they've fixed the rust or just covered.. it also gets my ocd off when they drill into metal to mouint stuff, but don't treat the bare metal they've caused in the process...

Thank you! I try to avoid drilling into the van for that very reason, but like you say, no one treats it.

I'm shortly buying a VW Caddy Life and will do a simple conversion like this (I mean, you did it properly), for anyone watching who's thinking of getting a small van like this, to convert into a camper, the Caddy is a good choice, there's also a Peugot Partner tepee, A Fiat Doblo or a Ford Tourneo Courier, and others.. a slightly larger but good, reliable van would be something like a Nissan NV200...You can get it with windows all around like the other cars mentioned too... I prefer PVC instead of Wood,It last longer,and It weigts less. For the floor i would have used a flexible glue as the engenier floor needs to be able to expand and contract,may be vinyl flooring it has more resitance to water . That rust 😟 remember the open rocker panel construction - behind the inner fender you can look into those for the whole lenght to the rear wheel. Our Caddy from 2005 had fist size rust holes in both sides just after 8 years - it was a beloved and well maintained family car. We cleaned the rocker panel twice a year but no chance against rust.
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! That's awful, where is the inner fender? I've nor heard of that before. As in the rear wheel arches?
@rupprechtknecht31032 жыл бұрын
@@willsvanadventures to get a look onto the mess it is enough to turn a front wheel to the outside ( steering wheel complete to the right ) - then remove the two lowest screws of the inner plastic fender and look behind the fender. There will be a lot of dirt and in our case it was more than 3 liters of water / mud mixture which came out of the rocker panel. It was when our Caddy was 6 months old. Also have a look on the deflector panel at the wipers. The rhd version will have two open holes on top which are for the lhd wiper arms. Those holes must be closed with plugs - otherwise the leafs will fall into and later there is a lot of soil there. The water / leafs / soil is guided to fall direct to the open position of the rocker panels. It looks if VW made that with intention....

I understand the following question would be down to personal preference, but what's the general consensus on declaring this to the insurance company? How much of a premium would it add?
@willsvanadventures Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's personal preference, more the fact you'd need legal and valid insurance. You'll need modified camper insurance, without out it, your insurance will be void. Doesn't add much but insurance all depends on your personal circumstances. Typically I paid £500-£600 a year. This year switched to Brentarce and it was cheaper than I've ever paid! Even with everything going up.

Very nice!!! I need to change vans since mine is getting more expensive to keep where I live and this is a great alternative. Is it cheaper to maintain? I love my VW T4 and want to stay with VW since they are so reliable. How is the caddy? And do you need get a camper licence for this type of built?? Great job!!
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you! Ah that's a shame but yh a smaller van will be cheaper! They are reliable like you say. I can't say if replacement parts are any cheaper but I know they are great on fuel. From my 1.6tdi engine I get on average around 60mpg. Most I've had is 70mpg doing 50mph and least on hills is always 45-55mpg. You don't need a camper license or anything like that either. 😁

I always declare them, as if you don't, you're insurance is void and could possibly be done for fraud. Just get good insurance such as Adrian flux who cover all modifications.

I Didn't use the sheep wool as it holds moisture and therefore, can go moldy. This would then cause illness and would smell.

@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
@@Nordschwarzwaelder it can get wet from the condensation in the van. Van's tend to have much more condensation build up then houses. I could be wrong, I'm only sharing the knowledge that I've learnt online from various other people building Vans. The majority of people avoid classic insulation due to holding moisture.
@Nordschwarzwaelder2 жыл бұрын
@@willsvanadventures The majority is not always right. Again, wool does not retain moisture, otherwise the sheep would always be wet. My wife comes from a sheep farm. Lanolin is in the wool to protect the sheep from getting wet. The wool on the sheep dries very quickly. Wool as insulating material doesn't get wet at all! Simply stuff the cavities with wool. Again, the wool keeps the sheep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The lanolin is produced by the sheep itself. LG from the pearl of the northern Black Forest Die Mehrheit muß nicht immer recht haben.

What’s difference between the silver stuff on the floor and on the wheel arches
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Hey, so one is thermawrap and one is sound deadening. The thermawrap is used as a condensation barrier and also reflects heat. The sound deadening absorbs vibrations making the van quiet while driving etc. Are you converting a van?
