►The 3rd generation VW 2.0 TSI is an evolution of Volkswagen's TSI engine. Although they appear similar, there are numerous distinct differences between the EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines.
The EA888 goes by a few different engine codes depending on the production year: CXCA, CXCB, and DKFA. These engines are most commonly found in both the Mk7 VW GTI and Mk6 VW Jetta GLI and make between 210 and 228 horsepower, depending on the production year.
There are only a handful of common problems to look out for on the VW EA888 Gen 3 engine, such as:
Low priority:
-Spark plugs
-Updated ignition coils
High priority:
-Intake valve cleaning
-Water Pump replacement
-Air oil separator (aka PCV valve)
-Rear Main seal (if leaking, a common side effect of a failed PCV valve)
Other than those mentioned above, the only preventative maintenance you should have to do is regular oil changes. Volkswagen claims an engine oil service interval of 10,000-miles is adequate for the EA888 Gen 3; however, it has been shown that service at 5,000-miles extends the life of internal components.

Good video. Here is some more advice. For these VWs watch out for 1. Leaks from Water pump and coolant flanges. 2. Replace your oil separator every 2 years (or yearly if you can). These always fail and are the main cause of many of the engine oil leaks mentioned in this video. 3. Use quality synthetic engine oil and change it regularly. Preferably every 7,000 kilometres. You will have less carbonisation snd performance issues. 4. Get a real vw technician to check the condition your timing chain once a year. 5. Be ready for some very annoying failures of electronic components... and they are expensive to replace. 6. Once your car is ok, make sure your really drive and enjoy it to make it "pay" for all the agony above.

@@muhammadbakashmar3166 Barely.... Also, I wouldn't take my Volkswagen to a Volkswagen dealer if they were giving away service for free. Absolutely a waste of your money and you'll wind up paying for it when they screw something up on your car. Find a decent independent mechanic shop and go there if you really have to.

My opinion is and I say this because I apply it , I resign I have had Audi cars , but what I do is I buy the car with less than 10 thousand miles certified , never new because you can more money , then the car all the way counts with warranty and apart one more year for certification , All Audi and VW come with 2 free services and one more that the dealership offers you (this is optional) not all offer it, at least in my state several dealerships do, I enjoy them until the end of the warranty and certification which is around 60 thousand miles or 5 years, and after that I change it for a newer one with the same options as the previous one, Why? Because if I would stay longer with them you lose more money in repairs and anyway your car continues to devalue and that money you invested in repairs you will not recover . And you really invest little in maintenance after your three years of free service , Which is an approximate of 800 Dlls for the next 2 years that I have left to change it .... Well that's my strategy , maybe there are other people that many what they do is just rent it for as many years as they want and so they avoid the cost of maintenance and repairs ... greetings .

@@fcpeuro i read something about timing chain tensioner failing on some EA888. I know the timing chain tensioner were updated through out the different generations of the EA888. @@CungNguyenify lol oh yeah!! Mine is a 2014 GLI so its a gen 3. I had a loose timing chain due to tensioner, which in turn made my camshaft rattle and get chipped. So new camshaft, mill the block from what the camshaft damaged, new oil pump and valve check. All started bc i had an EPC light / limp mode which turned out to be a wastegate. So new turbo too lol. My car was a pain in the ass but i basically have anew engine now...but yes tensioner on gen 3 yup is still something to worry about

2018 passat 2.0 b cycle, I finally changed the water pump at 110k but only because I felt like doing it, it wasn't giving any problems. I have not put anything into this car that wasn't completely preventive maintenance. Nothing has broken except a rear wheel speed sensor at 25k miles. I also beat the shit out of it for 800 miles per week and leave every redlight full send. LOL I think the best thing to do with any car is drive it like you stole it every day. Old lady cars always break down more often than cars that get rode hard and put away wet.

I do autox and track about once a year. My issue has been with my turbos, I have broken two wastegate actuators, the first one on the OE is 12, later I upgraded to the is20 and also broke the actuator rod in two pieces. Hopefully you will star selling that Mahle actuator being offer as an option by other places.

Excellent information. 65 K on my 2018 Golf 1.8 TSI Gen-3. Change oil every 5K, use Top Tier gas, almost all highway driving at 75 mph, 2300 rpm. Mileage is amazing (41-43 mpg). No problems yet, and following the maintenance schedule without variation. Not keeping up with maintenance on a VW is an invitation for expensive problems.

Keep in mind this is the company mill for VW/Audi they’ve been using this engine for 10+ years in millions of different models world wide. Engines that have major issues are a very very very small percentage. I personally have 138K miles on my 2015 GTI and it runs like new with routine maintenance and I drive it hard. Also, this isn’t a knock on FCP or any other company but they are here to sell you parts so of course they’ll make a video like this telling you everything will break.

I cant believe you forgot the wastegate actuator! My Passat is going back and forth with limp mode, and now starting to "creep." And the dummies @ VW thought it was a good idea to have to wastegate built-in, so you cant try even try and attempt to stiffen the arm. Damn p0229 has been kicking my ass, but that's partly my fault lol... I really appreciate the info bro, I got my first sedan and it's a European car, so the transition has been a little rocky, especially having only standard size tools and learning they only use metric. That was annoying as hell at first, but I just got VCDS, so if you can do any videos on VCDS on how to code a turbo after replacing it, would be much appreciated🙏🏽 Look forward to the next video, subscribed. 🤝🏽

I need some info & help RE; 2016 polo 1.8 gti tsi bluemotion 192hp DAJA. I have noticed a very small amount of engine oil on the spark plug thread on the last cylinder (air filter side), i believe that the leak is coming from the valve cover seal around that spark plug& dripping onto the nut of the spark plug , i think that when i removed that plug the oil dripped down the crush washer onto the thread ? The actual spark gap is normal & dry. So i now need to reseal the valve cover but there is a lot of hoses , valves etc to move so i can lift the valve cover out, i cant find any vids on how to do this on this engine , im no stranger to doing valve cover gasket relpacements but this one has made me think twice about doing it myself , i need as much info & help with this as possible , am i over thinking this task or is it a relatively easy task?? Normally a valve cover gasket job is a easy & straight forward proccess, obviously my engine is chain driven but will i mess the timing up when i remove the valve cover ? I dont want to undo anything that i dont need to undo or remove ,i just want to do the easiest straight forward way to do this . Tools are not an issue as i have the relevant tools needed . Thanks in advance If you or anyone has done this proceedure on the same engine ir has found a tutorial vid of it on this engine please can you let me know it will be very much appreciated , my email address is Sentinal123p@gmail.com

One way to let your timing chains last is don't follow VW's extended oil change interval. Get that crap drained out of your engine at 3k-5k miles and change it with whatever oil spec VW wants. Edit: Yeah I commented before he said 5,000 miles lol.

I have asked several experienced VW techs and no one knows 1 what the purpose is and 2 when to replace them or if they are needed. My concern is what happens if they break and leak in to the cooling system clogging heater core or radiator.

MK6 2.5 SE lasted 8 or 9 years at eighty something thousand and killed by a wreck (I seem to be a target - bit hit a total of about 5 or 6 times in my life). To be fair it never occurred to me but nothing ever happened to indicate it was necessary.

My mk6.5 1.8t has rough idle on cold starts, which diminishes in sport mode or after driving for a bit. Pulled code P0441 - EVAP system, incorrect flow detected. Also had misfires like you're saying, and camshaft over-advanced. Fuel trim went up to 32% at some points while revving in park. I don't wanna throw parts and time at it so I'm gonna take it to a shop. Engine power seems fine, pulls well on the freeway but the engine bucks so hard on cold starts.

@@SlowBoiGang I’m not really looking for performance. I’d probably put a new intake, bov(if turbocharged), better intake manifold possibly and the rest would mostly just be aesthetics, maybe new exhaust tips and a little bit more aggressive muffler. I’d like features such as sunroof, push start, command start(I could install it), and Apple car play. I’ve always driven a manual but I’ve been considering getting a auto for my daily and building something else as a project.
