Love all the techs claiming the EA888 is unreliable but lumping all three generations together. The gen3 isn't the same engine. The only real weakness is the water pump. Early IS20 turbo cars and some IS38 cars had weak turbo's and later facelift MK7.5 had some direct injector issues, but that's about it. There is no other car that is as good a daily driver bang for the buck as the Golf R. @@volkssturm9694you’re right - but the lack of good sounding EA888s isn’t because of some inherent design flaw of the engine - it’s due to the turbos. The K and IS series of turbos are not great in terms of how they sound when paired with the 2.0T. Look at any G series (turbo by Garrett) build on the EA888. They sound IMMENSE!! They absolutely transform the acoustics of the exhaust and make the EA888 sound genuinely good. The EA888 is a "successor" to the EA113 just as the EA113 was a "successor" to the EA827. The EA888 is essentially the successor to the EA827 unit that debuted in 1974 in the original Golf with a displacement of 1.5 liters. Really, the EA888 is just a reworked version of the 827 unit, so was the EA113 and a few others. @footballcoreano Incorrect. When Honda brought out their VTEC engines in the late 80s they were some of the most advanced, powerful and efficient engines in the world, far exceeding anything VAG had done at that point. Incidentally it was nearly 20 years later that VAG started employing their own take on the VTEC system (as used on this EA888 exhaust cam) so really it was VAG that copied Honda, not the other way round. "Simplest engineering" lol Honda were using double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension even in their small cars since 1991. VW, not so! And as for reliability - Well, check literally ANY reliability or owner satisfaction survey and you will see that Honda consistantly finished ahead of VW, and not just by a little bit! I do actually like some of VWs past efforts but you really need to get your facts straight.

The EA888.1 and .2 Can be reliable tuned as well, Do your maintenance on time, every time. And dont put off repairs for too long or they get worse and can pile up on each other. Gen1 & 2 of these engines (Gen1 ususally considered more reliable in general), Both versions have chain tensioner issues and tons of them still run the same tensioner design. Until the newest revision, All tensioners for these engines weren't exactly "Good" they were just improved. My A3 wasn't included in the recall and had a first revision tensioner that was ready to explode at any moment when I got it. Didn't sound bad at all, barely any noise on startup. Couldn't even hear it with the windows up and hood closed. Don't risk it. Don't even start it again even if its been sitting for months, until you can move it to take care of it. Any chain noise at all is not good on startup and any noise means its already toast. Its not an "I can push it to next week/month" moment Its a "My whole week/month has been ruined" moment. Get your that taken care of or do it yourself (Not a fun job.. Or tooo bad either), Check over everything physically and for leaks. Get a Vag-com or OBD11 and check that everything is operating within OEM spec on the engine side, Timing, Fuel trim, etc... Keep up on the irritating Carbon cleaning ritual, Install an All Metal Water pump when needed, Fix whatever else you need to. And it should be good to go for a long time.

Cars earlier than MY12 should have the revised timing chain tensioner fitted at the very least to prevent potential catastrophic failure due to a design flaw in the original. Stage 1 remap transforms the car but doesn’t hit fuel economy if you need to be economical. On a boring drive I’ll see around 45mpg while on a quiet day I can boot it and still get no less than 35mpg on the same journey. On the S3/Golf R there are many upgrades over the standard 2.0 , they are: 1) different cylinder heads (different aluminum alloy for higher thermal stress) 2) upgraded exhaust valve seat rings(improves temperature stablity), 3) upgraded exhaust camshaft (adapted valve timings) 4) compression ratio of 9:3:1 with different pistons 5)piston cooling jets (higher flow rate) 6)exhaust turbocharger 7) higher charge pressures up to 17.4 PSI 8)high performance main radiator 9) the connecting rods are reinforced. Just wanted to clarify that . Im glad I went with the S3, so far even stock it very quick and has amazing handling characteristics , (tossable chasis and very nimble)

So damn true. Things are so fucking slow too, but every kid who barely beats a clapped g35 thinks it’s insanity. The motor basically wrote the book “what’s wrong with direct injection”, right before it burned all it’s other books containing common sense.
@the_first_resort9402 жыл бұрын
People bring their car to you to fix and it’s unreliable? Are you unaware of the business that you are in? You wouldn’t have a job if engines didn’t have failures. I work at heavy duty American truck dealer and these trucks are half a million dollars and guess what?! They come to the dealer ready to be sold and they’re not actually ready to be sold, leaking atf, ps fluid, exhaust leaks, mismatch paint, bent steering components , missing filters etc. we don’t judge reliability off of why their broken we judge reliability off of how often they do break and that isn’t very much with how much power they produce. We make trucks with over 600hp and 2000lb ft of torque and time to time they prove to be less reliable than gas engines.
@the_first_resort9402 жыл бұрын
@@fry.master pretty sure a g35 also has about 100more horsepower and 2 more cylinders so yeah that is something to toot about. You couldn’t be more biased with a name like that could you? As far as direct injection goes, yeah sucks so bad all other car companies followed.

It is a strong, tunable engine but I hear quite a lot of stories of faileurs at under 100k miles, which is not very impressive! They certainly go quick especially when mated to DSG (also prone to early failure) and AWD but they do sound dull even when tuned. I think VAG have done better engine overall in truth. But as modern engines go, it is not too bad.

Bullshit. You can beat the hell out of Volkswagen cars. What starts happening at the 10 year mark is that they start to "nickel and dime" you, but it is little things like power windows, sunroof motors, cruise control....et cetera. A properly maintained EA888 will easily see 300,000 miles.

@@Flies2FLL If there are ANY modern VAG cars still running with over 300k on the clock then I can guarantee they will have had virtually every moving part (and most of the electronics) replaced. I've never owned a VW myself (though family members have) so I concur about all the failing accessories and electronics, but a quick check on any VW/Audi owners forums will reveal no shortage of owners suffering engine/transmission/suspension/electronics issues far earlier than they should and the EA888 is no exception to this. @@thanosdv4501 because it's a rolling disaster that has cost me more in basic maintenance than my Miata did throughout the life of the car including the purchase price. It's a piece of shit. What other car on the planet has blinker switches that cease to function at 90k miles? or the window switch? or the sunroof switch? My heat doesn't work unless it's above 50 degrees. The turbo needs replaced because the wastegate arm is zinging and will get slightly stuck and throw a lean condition code. The day I drove it off the lot, it leaked oil out of the rear main seal, pcv was bad because of course it was, this one never got the updated timing chain tensioners, so I replaced those as well. The water pump on these are a ticking time bomb that usually requires half the engine to be disassembled, so that'll be another $600 some day. The headliner already failed (usually these go at 30k or so), and was already replaced. Both access covers/ housings for the tail lights fall off all the time. It really never ends.

I had a gen2 EA888 engine in a MK6 GTI stock, owned from new. Was great when it was new but quickly wore out. I had the following issues: timing chain tensioner, water pump, diverter valve x2, HPFP, coil packs x2, stretched timing chain, and to top it off, at 70,000Km it needed new pistons, rings and conrods due to the 1ltr/1000km oil consumption. This was also coupled with several other issues with the vehicle. It was serviced well before it was needed and I changed the oil every 8,000km with Mobil1. It was never thrashed or abused. It had only done 80,000km when I sold it but the engine sounded like it had done 280,000km. What piece of shit that VW was and the dealers were worse. I now own a Hyundai I30N and have had zero issues at 65,500km. Please VisioRacer, don't encourage people to buy anything form VAG or sing the praises of any VAG products!

@dom38272 жыл бұрын
You forgot false constructed piston rings in the EA888 1st Gen. Where VW released new rings short after and workshops needed to replace them as soon as they have the engine opened. The coking. After 100k Km you need to get the engine cleaned, or you will cause serious damage and also will have serious power loss. The engine will feel tired and weak. Pistons which like to get a hole burned through ( stock engine, stock software ). The list continues.
