Volkswagen Golf GTI MK 7.5 (Pt.2) Genting Hillclimb - YS Khong Driving

The Golf GTi remains one of the best hot hatches around. It has 230 horses and 350 Nm of torque, but you can put all of the power down without any problems. A slightly longer second gear ratio would be better, but that is only a minor point.

The GTi never had the issue. That was on the 7-speed dry clutch, and that was 8 years ago. If the issue has not been resolved after 8 years, even VW would have thrown it away. As it is, today, let me try to name all those makers, other than the VW-Audi-Porsche group that are using DCTs. BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Renault, just to name a few.

personally drove it (own it). MK 7.5 GTI. the front wheel catches but perhaps it being a FWD, somehow the back tires were dragged. it doesnt really grip well when going 0-100 for the inital start. felt kinda sluggish overall for the "launch" going for tight corners, you will feel like ure losing grip in your back tires and had to ease off with the steering, didnt dare to attack the corner as much (perhaps i was too used to drive my 2seater). i wont say that GTI is a powerful car straight off from start but decently picks up as you run thru the gears. buying it? if it is within your budget or looking for something similar, Leon Cupra, Megane RS would also be good choices. else if can afford and cash is not your concern, perhaps the Golf R, A45, RS3 would be the better option. (understands that R, A45 and RS3 are all diff classes compared to GTI, but if ure looking for both power and performance, i doubt GTI can deliver.)

Nice driving, i have a GTI clubsport, even more HP. Mine has the same engine as the Golf R.... But mine is a manual. I like manuals more.... Nice road too, wish i could drive there, but we have the nordschleiffe, which i driven a few times with my GTI.

You must be from Germany! Lucky you. We pay a lot more here for the same car because of import duties, and it is nearly impossible to get a manual here. Also no options for engines, so we get by on what we get. The road is the Genting access road. The stretch you see is 8.4 km long and the good thing is that 95 percent of the road is a split highway, with one way traffic, so we can take lines. Of course we have to slow down for other cars, so an early start is key. Thanks for watching, and welcome to the channel. I have been to the VW Advanced Driving course once before, and drove the Mk 7 R and Scirocco R there.

Hahaha, yes. I could do with a higher second gear for this hill, but then on tighter turns the current ratio would be okay. In retrospect, I could have used third on most of the places I used second, but it would have been not so fun. The car was so easy to handle

Why is there a lag on the Mk 7.5 GTI when manual downshifting using paddles? In some other performance cars (e.g. Ferrari), the DSG gearbox is very quick on the downshifts too -- needle jumps as soon as you hit the paddle downshift. Has this got to do with the tuning of the DSG box in the GTI, or is it simply not technically possible for the GTI to downshift so fast manually?

You could possibly be accelerating when trying to shift down. Throttle position is an indicator to the DSG whether to shift up or down. The next gear engaged in readiness is a higher gear if you are accelerating, and if you are braking or decelerating, then the DSG engages a lower gear. Also, you could be going at too high a speed for that lower gear, so it wont engage until you slow down to that speed.

Hello, Vario - the Mégane RS 280 Cup has more horsepower and more torque, and handles very well too. Both are just as fun and engaging to drive. I would say the Mégane is a step higher than the Golf GTi based on power, but behind the Golf R.

I think they have the same engine. The GLi is the Jetta 2.0 litre, and if I am not mistaken, is offered in the US. Should be a very nice car to drive. If it is built on MQB platform it will be a fantastic car. We are not going to see it here.

Love your driving videos, but I think it would be more intuitive if you would put a peddle meter like in the f1s where we know when you are peddle to the metal or peddle on the brakes. Just a suggestion. It would teach a lot in paddle control for different type of drivetrain.

Good idea but we already run 4 cameras one sound recorder, and sometimes a light. Anyway, pedal work is intuitive: everybody should know when to brake and when to accelerate. And each situation is unique, no hard and fast rules. Even entry speed depends on car, and driver skills. You cannot see everything just by watching a video. If that was possible we would have a very high standard of driving.

How would you compare this to the Renault Megane RS that you test drove before? Both prices are not so far apart so I am confused which to pick? I would drive it into city traffic for 5 days before heading out to the highways, the remaining 2 weekend days.

As I said earlier, the Mégane is in between the GTi and the Golf R in terms of power and torque. If you want to buy one I suggest you go and test both then select whichever one that appeals to you. Note that you can get a manual Mégane but not a manual Golf. However if you are using it in the city, the auto versions would be better (DCT/ DSG).

Seramics, I fall in love with every great car for different reasons. Each one has its good and bad points. The Mazda 3 would appeal to a different segment. In order to be in here you need to be above 200 hp, or you can t even keep up. I am not sure if the I30N was any faster, but on paper it had a bit more power. Both are about the same weight, so technically the Hyundai is faster.

The R and the 86 are two totally different animals. The 86 is a fun car that is made for playing around and it's narrow tyres are to allow the car to break away easily. It does not have very much power but it is very agile. The Golf R is a serious piece of machinery, for no nonsense, high speed driving, super high grip, hardly any sideways, high grip level. Most people who have the 86 wish that it came with a turbo, and most people spend some money to get some extra horses. There is no comparison; I like both, and want to have both. If you can only have one, the 86 is probably more affordable, and if you are young, that would be more appealing. The 86 is also good for new drivers to learn how to drive and to learn car control. A seasoned driver might find the R can give more speed. It can cruise at consistently high speeds and stops better. Top speed is 250 versus 200 in the 86.
