It’s still probably the biggest stopper to the expansion of EVs right now. Hope more car manufacturers take the TESLA route and integrate charge points network into their offering. Imagine Kia having a public charging network attached to every garage and showroom across the UK. Add a few vending facilities or maybe access to cycle track. Make charging with Kia a good experience. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHjQgIqsp92Hq5Y

Not sure what the situation is in UK, but in North America, it's still too expensive to switch to EV. Gas is way cheaper here, and distances are very long. If I was to buy an ID.4 ( We don't buy small cars out here ), it would take me 10 years to break even. Not making sense yet.

What this - and most - reviews fail to mention is the total cost of ownership for five years. From that perspective, it turns out that even now, an ID.3 is cheaper per kilometer than a 1.5 Golf with similar equipment. Since EV's are so much cheaper to own it's not fair to look only at purchase price.

All 7 of the "series" models available to order (plus the 1st) come with 100kW charging as standard. I'm just incredulous that all electric cars do not have a compartment under the bonnet to store the charge cables! Especially cars designed to be electric from the ground up. There's lots of wasted space up front, especially with the motor of this one being at the rear. The puncture kit etc could go under the bonnet too, giving much more storage in the boot.
@leesmart1971
@leesmart1971 4 жыл бұрын
My Kona has the space for front storage but Hyundai chose to install a fake engine cover instead. I removed it, fitted gas struts to the bonnet and mounted a storage box on the existing mounting points for the fake cover. Cables stored nicely. Doesn't get hot and stays dry, freeing up valuable space in the boot.

As a BMW i3 owner I will be interested in driving rage ID 3 to make a comparison. The design clearly takes inspiration from the i3 but, other than the missing frunk, is more spacious and practical. Just wondering whether it will be as sporty to drive and if the overall quality measures up. IMHO it looks to be a pretty good effort by VW and I really look forward to other iterations on the same MEB platform.

Would be interested if the changing speed wasn’t tacked on as an option. Already have a Nissan Leaf that has a 40 kWh battery witch can only charge at up to 50 kWh as standard. For a 75 kWh, I would expect a charging rate of 100 kWh to come as standard. That in itself would be a big put off if optional. what VW really knows is making a good package with optional features. they don't take away established good things like the display behind the steering wheel and then call it a modern feature. with the touch things they pushed it a bit too far, i think. i guess they will listen to the customers and put a little more effort into the interior of the face-lifted version in three years. for this version they obviously had to compromise to meet a certain price target.

@@Tom55data Taking a quick look at websites it seems Tesla, BMW and DS are the only brands that doesn't have 'On the road price' (featuring the government grant) as the default price on their website. CORRECTION: Diesel Gate was discovered by Virginia Tech University engineering department students who later went on to the News media to report their findings. Then later on the EPA decided to take a look at Virginia Tech's engineering students findings to later conduct their own studies that they should have been doing in the first place. It’s very comfortable and instinctive to drive. Spacious and modern looking. That’s where it ends for me, priced too high range/ efficiency too low and fit and finish quite un-golf like. The hardware and software interface is totally substandard, I’m not surprised so many are available on Autotrader. It’s a real shame, they have a chance to get it right, it feels to me like a wasted opportunity. The ID3 comes without drivers lumbar adjustment in the seat and I can’t get a 5 seater with a 77kwh battery. Opportunity loss for VW.

That is definitely Tesla's trump card but having said that I had a Zoe ZE40 for three years and in 19k miles I only had to public charge 5 times and never had difficulty finding a charger (I did have to plan longer trips though). In other words if you can charge at home and don't do regular round trips of more than 200 miles it will be fine. I think over £20k is still more than I would spend on any car these days so from my perspective it is still expensive. I have a petrol car again now and fuelling it is was more hassle than home charging (I much prefer driving it to the Zoe though).

So, can you see this being the 'default' choice like the golf sort of is? Really, is it best in class for all roundedness (price, quality, power, range, ride and handling, space, efficiency in kWh/mile etc)
@jfe1985
@jfe1985 4 жыл бұрын
It always depends on your personal needs and expectations. But the ID.3 indeed has very good allround qualities, in many respects even more so than a Golf. Use of Space and its effect on driving: It is small enough for the city and drives very well in sharp bends etc. (turning cycle of 10,2 metres which is closer to VW's dwarfish Up with 9,8m than to a Polo with 10,7m or even Golf with 11m!). But it is also spacious and comfortable enough for long distances. The passengers have almost as much space as in a Passat without the Passat's obstacles for their legs and they sit a bit higher up like in a Golf Plus without having to drive an SUV. So in this respect it may actually be the best VW there ever was and even more space efficient than a Tesla. But if you don't care about compact size or driving in the city as much as for a frunk or a (still) larger boot and if you actually enjoy a deep sporty sitting position anyways, there will be better cars out there. Energy Efficiency/ Suitability for long distances: Many drivers seem to get an average consumption around 17ish kWh per 100 km or 60ish miles. You can get around 15 kWh with realistic effort and the right surroundings, but you can also get over 20 kWh. At higher speed the ID.3 is slightly less efficient than a Tesla Model 3 and recharging at a fast charger takes a bit longer, but the difference actually isn't nearly as big as many expected. In other words, you do have a very efficient car (even more so at lower speed) so even on the motorway the comfortable high up sitting position doesn't cost as much range as many thought. Some reviewers have driven 600 miles in one go and neither the car nor the passengers had any issues with this (depending on traffic, speed limits and charging networks, 600 miles took between 10ish and 11ish hours). A Norwegian Tesla enthusiast even drove the ID.3 up to the Northern Cape and back and praised it quite a lot. Quality: You do not get an Audi and you will have to live with some plastic. Otherwise the car seems to be totally fine (no roof falling off etc.) and much of it is even far better than it may appear at first sight. So many reviewers don't mind the plastic, yet many others do. It completely depends on your subjective expectations. If you buy now, you also have to deal with some software bugs. None of them seem serious, but it can be quite annoying. Personally, I would wait for some updates, but all cars will get the updates anyways. Power: It clearly isn't a Tesla Performance etc., but 150kW/ 204hp can easily deal with a car like this. If you don't need to accelerate like a rocket or to drive over 100 mph, you will be fine. Assistance Systems and Safety: The ID.3 actually introduced a lot of features to this class, some of which even Tesla doesn't have yet (Matrix LED lights, head up display, a travel assist which always keeps you at the right speed and even takes you through a roundabout...). It also has good breaks and enough airbags and got the highest possible rating in the newest more strict NCAP crash test. Price: In my opinion, you won't find a better car for the same price, but it isn't very cheap either. Some say, they'll rather wait for the Skoda Enyaq though which is a larger car and may not be far more expensive. The Chinese also may offer decent electric cars for lower prices soon.

@@DanRyzESPUK true but choice is rarely a bad thing. Selling volume is what they need to get the cost down, and lower priced-lower range cars will help them sell this volume. The two most successful 'afforadable' EV's in the UK at the moment are also two of the lowest range - the Nissan Leaf and MG ZS partially because the 40kw batteries of their base models has enough range for many but keep them affordable. Some people need more range - in which case they should be able to pay to upgrade to a larger battery* but there is still a large market for smaller battery affordable EV's and trying to appeal to this market will help increase economies of scale and bring down costs. *They can already do this with the leaf and will be able to do it in the ZS from next year

Thanks for a great review. However, it is very disappointing indeed that VW seem to have no plans to offer the ID.3 with a high performance, dual motor option for those customers wanting something really sporty, e.g. a fully EV version of the VW Golf R , which would compete directly with the power/performance of the Tesla Model 3 Performance. In my own case, I definitely want to move across to a fully electric vehicle when my current PCP contract expires in July 2021. Ideally, I would also like something a little smaller and faster than my current car, which is a BMW 335d Touring. So currently, the *only* option available to me for the immediate future is a Tesla Model 3 Performance - which I will certainly consider, but I have to be honest and say that for me, it is not the most attractive looking car. Am I the only person who wants a really sporty, fast, affordable fully EV car which is *not* a Tesla? And which is also not a Porsche Taycan Turbo S!

There is some irony in the fact that VW couldn't get the software for the ID3 working, yet they managed to write software to deliberately circumvent emissions test on a monumental scale...

well that software was extremely simple due to the extremely stupid emissions test being done exclusively on a test rig and never ever in the real world. Lots has been said about the software glitches in some of the early car reviews but I'm sure they'll work them through and correct with OTA updates. Nice presentation. I have to agree with you about it not being a car design you worry people will talk about when you park it on your drive. It's quite..... 'anonymous'. I'd say its a pretty decent but safe 1st attempt from VW. I love the idea of going full electric but to date the cost & infrastructure has been prohibitive but this seems quite reasonable, although it's still probably too expensive for most of the general public. One thing I don't understand, is why some manufacturers when designing a car from the ground up, insist on making the main centre touch screen look like it is an add on or after thought, oh bother we forgot to add the touchscreen into the dashboard design, it's OK we can stick it on the front? It looks so much better when it is built into the dash itself. Moan over. sorry.
