You Sir are a real pro ! Thank you for taking the time to make this video . I have a 20th AE GLI and am replacing the exact parts (FOR THE SECOND TIME). Weird stuff happens when the switch burns up, that's for sure .But this time it stopped running and acted like it was possessed ! I will never trust this car on a road trip. :(

I wish you were here now Thomas. This thing is starting to turn into a nightmare. A couple of the wires from the switch is burnt back who knows how far. I've dropped the relay center down and starting looking over that part. There were signs of overheating there, but maybe okay. I'm going to dig deeper on that. And I still got to drop the harness down, but it's being held by some kind of white plastic holder. That's as far as I got so far. I'm rendering the video now for the dropping of the relay center. What were the engineers thinking to put that stuff up in there? I may need to ask you a question or two if I run into a snag. Thanks for stopping by Thomas.

Is there a sweet stop for the ignition switch placement? I insert it and tighten the little flat head screws and the ignition won't turn. I loosen it a little and it turns but doesn't start. I have a parasitic draw on my battery and the s-contact on ignition switch is my error. So, I'm replacing the switch. Its getting dark and I was at a storage place trying to sway out the switch before sunset. I'll have a look at a bentley manual and see what is says or a haynes guide. You'd think it would be gut wrenchingly simple but I'm at a loss at the moment.
@stuzman524 жыл бұрын
Pretty straight-forward on the ignition switch replacement John. You may have to make sure that the key is in the right position when you slide the switch in. You should be able to see the keying to see how things line up.

I have a 2001 VW Diesel Beetle it stopped the other day with my wife. Everything shut off, no dash lights no nothing. After a period of time she was able to start it and make it home. It has set for a few days, i went out and cranked it this morning drove it to Public's came out turned key nothing. Battery New, checked volts 13.27. Still nothing. Could be switch? Viewed this, very helpful, thanks for the video. Getting ready to go back to Public's and see if it will crank, been about 2 Hrs. Any suggestions???
@stuzman523 жыл бұрын
It could be the switch Wayne, but it could be a slew of other things such as loose connection, relay and the list goes on. Hopefully, you'll be able to get it back home and with a wiring diagram take a look at the starting circuit to see some possible culprits that's causing your problem. Good luck on what you find!

In an automatic what what would I test before replacing the ignition switch?
@lamarmarsengill49458 жыл бұрын
Aggravating was exactly what I was thinking when you were working on the 2 screws behind the steering wheel.
@stuzman528 жыл бұрын
You are correct Lamar...those two screws were the most difficult part of this whole job. If the engineers had put the screws about 1/2" out further, it wouldn't be no problem. But with their wisdom, they felt that it would be better to have a screwdriver that would bend it's shaft against the steering wheel to get at the screws. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a comment.

9:10 Well I tried twice on mine to get this bottom panel off without removing the wheel. At first I thought it wouldn't come away because the top panel was holding it in place. So I tried removing that first. But no, it just would not budge no matter what I did.. The plastic shaft housing the left hand screw just protruded too deep into the plastic containing it and the steering wheel blocked it coming out no matter how I turned it or how much force I applied. So I've got to wonder if there's some different parts in play here. Mine is an 03 Bora, which is just the UK name for the Jetta. After 2 attempts I took the wheel off, then sawed the left hand plastic shaft off so that in future I can get down there without removing the wheel. Not crazy about it as a solution to the problem, but I cant afford a torque wrench so want to avoid taking the wheel off too many times. So it had to be that way.

How on earth did you remove the bottom plastic piece so easily - after getting the screws out? On my Jetta, the holes that the small screws were in were a little over 1" long and were nested inside some sort of electrical box right behind the steering wheel. I resorted to breaking them in order to remove the cover, but it went together just fine without those screws.

Hi, this is my first VW! Now I love my Jetta but I'm about to pull my hair out, and then some...... .so that had to replace the ignition switch. That had been done that all went well until now! We went to go start the car long story short.... I had to replac the battery now also. So now we have a new battery and ignition switch. Go to start the car.... The car starts 😁, then it died!! Start the car again, and it died. Now I notice that the "immobilizer" light on the dashboard is on now. Does anybody know if I have to call a locksmith come and program this now with the new switch or can I do this how. I don't have the money for a locksmith and been with out my car for almost 2 weeks now. At this point anything may help!!
@stuzman523 жыл бұрын
I would suspect Linda that the wires on the ignition switch going to the module for security got disturbed, maybe one of them broke. You shouldn't have to program anything for a switch replacement.
