I wish this video was around when I rebuilt the rear brakes on my Mk2 Gti. Even though my car came with rear discs from the factory it was a pain to source decent 85' rear calipers. If I was to do it all again, I would definitely go with the Mk4 calipers. Great video and great content on this channel. Now that this car is leaving the Mystery Garage...I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for these Sunday episodes.

As I'm doing/replacing the new hand brake cables, I noticed that mine seem too long. I believe I bought the ones for MK3. I'm guessing there's my problem, or they also should fit the MK2 platform? I'm really surprised that the aftermarket doesn't provide standard kits to do this stuff. As popular as these cars are, I'd think that Brembo and the others would make this stuff easily available like they do for so many other cars.

Doesn't this conversion need proportion valves? I know they have a load compensation valve but should it also have disk brake specific pills on each rear line before that? My experience tells me those rears are going lock real early.

Yes sir, more or less what i tried to cover of in the disclaimer a little... Once you open the can of worms too much, you start to go down rabbit holes and i was trying veer away from that why i suggested everyone does their individual research and do what fits their own needs. This car still has more brake upgrades to come in its future, Fronts, Master, etc... so i left that alone for now. Maybe ill cover more on that down the road, have to see! Thanks for the comments, appreciate the watch and the support!! Cheers

For this kind of conversions you need brake pressure reducers, without them the rear discs will block and you will loose control of the car.

Just done this on my 1989 vw mk1 cabriolet but having issues with what handbrake cables i need. I have the mk3 rear calipers. The original cable to my drum brakes was a 171609721C….. the corrado cables that came with the rear disc conversion kit, were a 1HM609721A and i'm being told that the cables i actually need come from a scirroco which is a 533609721 or possibly even a 1H0609721E which looks like they wont fit either. Any ideas?

This video doesn't show the proper way of doing a disk brake conversion. Both the mk1 and the mk1 need special proportioning valves installed when swapping from drums to disks. Leaving them out messes up the brake balance which can cause the car to spin in an emergency brake situation. The disclaimer at the beginning doesn't make it any better. Working on brake systems without knowing what you are doing is already bad enouth. Doing it on someone elses car or uploading a video tutorial about doing it the wrong way despite knowing better is just plain irresponsible.
@MysteryGarage
@MysteryGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha alright man... While you're not wrong on the proportioning side of things, my disclaimer as you mentioned covered off the fact that there are many ways to get to the end target (factory, Aftermarket etc..) so I left that to everyone's personal research, i specifically said that. But i would hesitate to say i don't know what I'm doing... To each their own man... Either way i appreciate peoples comments and their own take, and i take your feedback in stride, not everyone's going to be on the same page as my content and I'm ok with that. When you make a how-to video of your own, send me a link id be happy to promote it, but until then id take it easy on the insults... Appreciate the comments regardless and thanks for watching!! Cheers

@@CodewortSchinken fair enough, like I said I appreciate your take, I’m not here to be misleading in the slightest. I’m also not here for my channel to be taken literally either... if you were a fan of the channel (for lack of a better term, meaning, standard viewer) you would know I’ve stated this channel is not a “how-to channel” multiple times (mentioned almost to the point of annoyance) that it’s just a video log of my auto journey so to speak. I’d love for you to watch more of my content to understand that... everything anyone does on KZbin needs to be taken with a grain of salt, understanding there much more to it... I don’t watch house building video and build a house based on others codes, that’s to be understood. Why I even bothered with the disclaimer in the first place. if I took the videos I watch litterally I would be a millionaire driving super cars laughing at ordinaries like myself. This is a hobbiest channel with hobbiest views. Yours is literal, I’ll let you take it that way and leave it at that. Cheers man! I wish you happy motoring as I do everyone I encounter!! All the best!
@eldarsk8er
@eldarsk8er Жыл бұрын
You are right! He has 100% pressure on the rear brakes! 3/15 brake pressure reducers are needed for the conversion. There are no factory from VW, many were using those from the Opel Kadett GSI, Astra GSI, Peugeot 205/305 GTI. The so called 5th brake valve on the MK2 is useless because you lowered the car and the valve opened up because you simulated that the car is overweight.
@victorh940
@victorh940 3 жыл бұрын
Love your content. When I did the conversion on my 78 Mk1 I used the proportioning valve from a 84 rabbit GTI which is located in the engine compartment on the fire wall. This valve replaced the spring regulating mechanism that was on the rear axle beam on early rabbits.. When converting to discs from drums the old regulator would not compensate for the increased clamping force and the rears would lockup causing a very dangerous situation. I realize the 84 GTI's had drums but for some reason this valve just works. After installing this valve I've never had the rears lock up and the brakes always work as they should. I'm no expert and it's been about 20 year since I built my rabbit but I still drive it today and the brakes work great. I also have the vacuum booster master cylinder system from the same 84 GTI. Here's what the valve looks like. www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=%2bsh7gfsD&id=D8F9A6189F0E7DAD166EA3C17C18FE7A226B0D08&thid=OIP.-sh7gfsDScxpeyfHrM7FkQHaFr&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fth.bing.com%2fth%2fid%2fRfac87b81fb0349cc697b27c7accec591%3frik%3dCA1rInr%252bGHzBow%26riu%3dhttp%253a%252f%252fassets.suredone.com%252f1517%252fmedia-photos%252fcp026445-brake-pressure-regulator-vw-jetta-rabbit-mk1-genuine-oe-175-612-151-2.jpg%26ehk%3dzV9CvrIqeu4wtrR4ZO1BySMhEVlN9LoYFtwdp4tXud8%253d%26risl%3d%26pid%3dImgRaw&exph=800&expw=1044&q=1984+vw+gti+brake+proportioning+valve&simid=607997267040745928&ck=B6A478B01AD79851F597C2F3909C24F1&selectedIndex=2&FORM=IRPRST&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0
