Volkswagen Polo Engine Shuts Down After Starting It (read the description)

An issue for the Volkswagen cars, Polo, Golf 4, 5, Passat, Seat Ibiza and some of the Skoda cars like Fabia (since all share the same engine developed by VW).
When you don't use the car, leave it for 24 hours or more, when you first start it, it starts, but the engine shuts down after 2-3 seconds, then you have to start it again in order to work properly. And then it works.
In the video, I show the trick by keeping the right foot on the acceleration pedal and keeping it pressed slightly once you rotate the key to start the car.
For me it works every time if I do this.
The issue is probably related to the gas filter. Or something related to the gas getting dried since you don't use the car for longer periods of time.
Put it on the tester or go to a mechanic if it bothers you a lot, or do the trick from the video and you will be just fine.
In the video, the car is a 2003 Volkswagen Polo, 1.4 FSI, running on gas.

Hello! Solved my problem, identic car and sintomps even the acceleration thing, I'm pretty sure you had the same problem but the mechanic couldn't tell you the truth because the reparation cost would've been very cheap. He preferred to tell a little lie to charge you more. (Then the radiator fan has nothing to do with the engine start) Wath I did: First I cleaned the MAP sensor, it was extremely dirty, car has 200.000 km and never been cleaned. That didn't solved the problem ☹. In the second try I cleaned the MAF sensor, it only had a bit of black smoke deposit. In this second step I also cleaned the trottle body which was in extremely bad condition it had about 0,7 cm of carbon deposit on the inside part which prevent the valve working properly. Cleaned it with solvent and a tooth brush. The second step solved my problem I don't know if cleaning the MAF or the trottle body but both of them should be done. Now the car works fine, I even feel more power when pressing the acceleration, and I don't feel anymore the unburnt petrol odor with the engine cold.

That's great to hear, I will put this comment pinned. I also added recently some additive branded Moly (in the gas tank) that states that it is cleaning the injectors. It really made a difference, the car runs much better now.

Update: I have made a new video where I explain what the mechanic did kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4falaiJr8SIirM Looks like the issue is related to some temperature sensors. I will make a new video where I explain what needs to be done. I will link it here when it will be online. Meanwhile, if you go to a mechanic, tell him to check those sensors.

I have the same issue on my 9N, 1.4, 55 kW running on LPG, mechanic swapped the egr valve with a new and it did not fix the issue 🤬

It works for me as I explained in the video, when I start the car, I press slightly the acceleration pedal.

What car do you have? Because I don't think there are old Polos with automatic transmission. I guess first thing to do is to get it tested with an error tracker device.

@@PSVICEi have an automatic polo from 1996 diesel , it dies after turning it on do you know what it might be the problem, sometimes u have to accelerate to keep the engine on

Cand dai prima cheie moare, la a doua merge? Vezi sa nu fie si de la baterie, recent am dat cheie si a murit motorul imediat, apoi dadeam sa pornesc insa nu mai pornea. A trebuit sa o reincarc.

@@PSVICE pornesc de pe loc mă ține în șuturi câțiva metri apoi se oprește. Când debreiez la fel moare.. Am găsit senzorul g28 eroare pe vcds. 😐😐

@@dennispowers7261 N-am avut problema asta, nu stiu sa iti zic. Eu am fost la un electrician si mi-a schimbat senzorul de la radiator si aveam doua mufe puse gresit ce tineau tot de niste senzori de caldura, insa nu stiu daca este valabil si la tine. Incearca sa intrebi pe Facebook, vezi grupul "forum volkswagen romania". Sau pe forumul softpedia.
