Climb inside the Volkswagen Polo GTI and you could easily mistake it for a Golf GTI, such is the upmarket feel of the cabin. Build quality is exceptionally high for a supermini and the cockpit is loaded with technology. Mounted on the back of the steering wheel, twin paddles operate the seven-speed dual clutch gearbox and VW's clever traction control system sorts out the handling in sharp corners. The Polo GTI is a very desirable supermini but shares it's running gear with the cheaper Skoda Fabia vRS and SEAT Ibiza CUPRA, both offering similar specifications for less money. Under the bonnet the Polo GTI has a 1.4 TSI litre petrol engine which is both supercharged and turbocharged helping to provide impressive pace across the rev range without harming fuel consumption. Producing 178bhp, it catapults the Polo GTI from 0-62mph in a brisk 6.9 seconds.

This is embarrassing. The Polo has a better looking front than the Golf GTI. I like the styling of the Golf GTI mostly but I find the Testarossa cheese slicers over the foglights odd. I wish it was possible to remove them and swap the front lower from the Polo but they're molded in. One guy hated the cheese slicer styling so much that he cut them off and installed his own. I have no idea how he had them built. They look like original factory body panels! Must have cost him a pretty penny.

Nice review but you forgot that the back seats can be folded down to create a completely flat loading bay if you fold the bottom seats up and practicality wise there are drawers below the front seats for extra storage.

Although the new 2015 version of the Polo GTi has been on-sale in the UK for weeks , I am unable to find any review of this car by any UK-based web or KZbin channel. The new 1.8 litre turbo engine'd version of the Polo GTi looks great on the German-based KZbin channels. Sadly the German channels (obviously !!) don't speak English !! So come on CarBuyer, let us see a review of the new Polo GTi !!!

Carbuyer, you pay a lot more atention to water bottle spaces than to the car itself. This is a GTi, nobody cares if you can't fit 3 bottles at once. Also, if it's always raining there, you might want to find a replacement for the "bottle test". x) Just check if there is enough space for your wallet/cellphone and that's it. Talk about it for 3 seconds and move on. Please.

There is an art in getting the best out of an automatic gearbox, and the VW Group DSG box makes it really worthwhile to take the time to acquire a new skill. My own car has about twice the power of the Polo GTI, and is an absolute hoot. If you cannot drive an automatic box go and learn rather than telling the world of your failing. Good review, shame about the sexist comments and the potty-mouth language. More people displaying their failings...

that's not strictly an automatic - it's a DSG! you have full control of your gears and it's a twin clutch gearbox

A UK extended warranty company listed VW as one of the least reliable cars (along with BMW), because they had to spend many dollars fixing broken engines. That makes sense given all the complaints I hear. (The best was Honda with double the reliability of any brand, then Toyota, Mercedes, and Ford Europe.)

The DSG is a dual manual clutch system with an automatic actuator. So it's a hybrid. Think of it as a manual and auto in one gearbox.

No manual even offered?? Seriously?? I was just impressed with this car in GT7 (for the class of car) and wanted to see what they were like IRL since we didn't get Polos in the US. Wow.. I am unimpressed by no manual. Small engine cars usually have easy to use manual shifters and light clutches.

It's very similar to the current Brazilian VW Gol, despite it's GTi. This make me believe that Gol GTi is finally coming up by 2016. And unfortunately buyers here should pay more than a Golf GTi there in UK.

Bought my Polo GTi two weeks ago. 3 Doors, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors and Air Con. The car has good economy and can be driven in a lazy "cruising" style whenever you want to drive slow. But then, whenever you want to go for a "blast" you can. The DSG gearbox and twin-charger engine combination takes a little time to get used to. But once I had changed my driving style I realised that this is the best engine and gearbox combination that I have ever used. In fact the only thing I would change about this car is that I would have an extra eighth gear for the motorway. Beyond this, the car is great !!

Jan Aike I agreed with your viewpoint regarding manual gearboxes, until I test drove the Polo GTi. Unlike conventional automatic gearboxes, DSG gearboxes really are better than manual boxes.

I have spent some time stuck in stationary and slow moving traffic. All works OK. I use the "N" and "P" selections on the gearbox.

Do not compare the Mark V Polo with the Skoda Fabia. You can only compare it with the Seat Ibiza and the Audi A1. The Fabia is based on the Mark IV Polo chassis.Even it's interior screams Mark IV Polo.

Fiesta only do a 3 door version, no 5 door available. Obviously its a question of opinion, but my opinion is the Fiesta ST looks horrible, the kind of car a teenager would drive.
