Oil quality and change intervals has a major role here, but eventually it will wear out no matter what. We had a pd116 with some cam lobes almost round, but lifters still good today, none of them worn all the way. The engine is down on some power but still runs fine.

The failure looks like the tree huggers campaign on removal of ZDDP from oils has resulted in issues for diesel and older model engines. I use ZDDP additive at every change (88 VW Fox gas job) since the lifters suffer otherwise. Using a diesel specific oil like a Rotella which does have extreme pressure components should help avoid the issue. Gotta love bad science.

Looks like a lack of 505.01/507.00 oils :P

Did you fix it? How much did it cost?

what's the cause that damage the came and lifters
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
+عبدالله العريبي Most of this new low emissions oil they have removed the zinc from the oil, so any kind of flat tappet lifters don't last very long.

Hey dude what symptoms did this show to lead you to check the cam followers? My 2.0tdi started bogging really bad only under 2000rpm and I've been advised it could be the cam followers.. cheers
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
+flabbybaps This one was rattling real bad, and missing.It was pretty obvious something mechanical in the valve train was coming apart. If yours isn't tapping or missing I would say that is probably not the cam followers.

grease monkey101 So I guess the bogging I'm getting in low revs is just some misfires. The engine is a little loud but no nasty noises. I started it from cold today (problem started when it was warm), and the problem's gone... any idea? 😅

Still pretty bad at that mileage but I wonder if its been run on the correct 507 spec oil for those engines
@kyranoboyle33782 жыл бұрын
505 01 is correct spec 507 is too thin
@MrCrabbing2 жыл бұрын
@@kyranoboyle3378 it is over spec perhaps but is fine to use in PD and CR engines, I owned a service and repair garage for a little over 20 years and we never had a problem with out customers VAG group engines using the long life spec oil

Did it still run with the lifters worn right through like that?
@westerntruckandtractorrepa13537 жыл бұрын
micheal zandbeek Yeah, but not very good.

grease monkey101 I'm look to buy 1 that has the same thing going on but it won't start. I was thinking this would cause a no start
@michealzandbeek54937 жыл бұрын
I can see 1 of the lifters that is worn right through and is sitting down far enuf that the cam lobe isn't touching. Do you think the issue goes farther than just cam and lifters causing a no start

+micheal zandbeek Is the timing belt broke or the ribs on the belt gone to where the crank is just spinning in the belt and not turning the cam?
