Totally agreed. Also, the celerio has the best turning circle, meaning that it's the most manoeuvrable in city conditions. City cars should be capable to do the average family shop. So the car with the best passenger and luggage space should win. Most importantly, people mainly buy these cars for lower running costs 62mpg compared with 42mpg. Also the previous reply is absolutely rubbish. The basic entry vw up, only has 3 doors with wind-UP front windows and pop out rears : D

I feel like the fuel economy didn't get put into consideration that much... but speed did. How is speed more relevant than fuel economy on a cheap small city cars? 63.5 mpg vs 42.4 mpg both while driving not that economically.. 21 mpg difference is a fare amount, that would save a lot of money over the long run... The people who consider these cars do prefer cheaper running cost than speed. Otherwise they would go buy bigger more powerful cars..
@MrSensible27 жыл бұрын
abinlukasabraham Since new, my Celerio has averaged about 71.5 mpg. Admittedly, I have a very gentle left foot and do a fair amount of motorway driving but you can get outstanding mpg from the Celerio. By way of comparison, the best I could squeeze out of my old Kia Picanto was 56.5 mpg...

Bharath Kumar I think it’s more the other way around, you don’t have a religious ceremony when you buy a new car, whereas dealerships in India do Hindu rituals of welcoming the car into the family. On the other hand, cheaper cars are more appreciated in India over features, as the fact that it’s a car is good enough as many people don’t have one (comparatively speaking of course as India’s population is significantly higher), where as in Europe everyone is almost expected to have a car, it’s what extras it offers that make it desirable. Also, safety features in cars for India are at the bottom of the list, in Europe they’re very near the top.

I normally drive a Suzuki Celerio SZ4 auto. However I've just driven a base model VW Up! rental car for a month in South Africa. Here's what I thought of it... The 59HP engine in the Up! is pathetically weak. On long hills you're forced to drop down to 3rd to get too the top! Also it's not very spacious. Try putting a big bag of shopping behind the front seat! Then the shiny plastic radio surround reflects the sun into your eyes (v annoying!). You get way more road/tyre noise on the Up! The Up!'s transmission tunnel is huge! Finally, the pop-out rear windows, the mirror simply glued to the windscreen & bare metal in the cabin make the Up! feel very third world. Pound for pound, the Celerio is a far better car than the Up!

Actually, I would prefer my mobile phone's navigation, screen quality and speed over almost any slow car infotainment system. I've experienced quite a few (included the i10's) and only expensive cars (above Golf VII/A3/Megane/308) get decent processor speeds. Even then you're better of firing up AndroidAuto/Carplay instead of proprietary nav. Moreover, you don't pay a million pounds for an already outdated map update without accurate traffic info like Waze or Google Maps. You can spent the money you saved on the sat nav on superior interior quality, engines and handling.

I have an VW UP! Move up with the 60hp engine. (Non turbo) I've also recently had an i10 as hire car. Although the hire car was higher spec than my UP!, I found road noise was awful, it wasn't a nice drive either. My UP! is more comfortable, just as nippy around the town, much less road noise and also much more involving and fun to drive. It always leaves me with a smile on my face. And to top it off it's very eco. I get 45mpg around the city. Yes, it isn't as quick acceleration on the motorway as the others or even this one tested here, but that's all. It doesn't struggle except by hill on the motorway but you get a run up and your ok. It is more than nippy enough around town. I simply love it!

First i wanted to thank the channel for helping me deciding which car to choose without having any regrets. Well after saying that , lets start. I am recent owner of a hyundai i10 1245cc I went for the active version including some extras i did buy mostly for the looks but some are for practical use aswell. The car insides are great, seats are nice and easy to clean. The driving is nice and steady/linear, the car wont easily lose track even on bad roads, that comes from a guy that lives around vilages in greece, and for those who have visited greece prolly know about our terrible roads. I am a new driver aswell, not long ago i got my license, did had the chance to drive a few cars but the i10 felt like it was easiest to drive for me. You sit quite high, got a nice field of view while the ceiling isn't even near my head, i am 1.86m tall. Usb for playing music from a usb stick, that doesn't sadly support USB 3 sticks and wont charge your phone. AUX so you can play music from your devices. Good sound system with decent bass from the speakers and quite loud if needed. Has no arm pillow for the front seats expect at the doors and in the middle of the back seats. Compared to a yaris it was smaller inside but you can stil fit easily 5 people in it but i recommend it to be for max 3 passengers for a comfy ride. Plenty of space for your keys/devices/cups/ heck it has more space for scrap than our opel vectra vauxhall which is one of the biggest cars. There is more road noise compared to other cars , overall noise is a bit more, mostly during speeding. I went max 80km per hour and the noise is more noticable at least compared to our opel. In term of looks, i would say white/polar and silver are your best choice, modern colors, more adult like and ofc they don't leave visible scratches compared to dark colors. I tint my back windows including my front/back lights and made it look even better, i own the polar version and because the active model didnt had the side door protection i went ahead and did buy them because it gives a even better look and ofc protects your doors from the sides like for example if someone else opens his doors on your car it will hit the plastic instead. Overall its a really nice looking small car, in term of looks i would say the i10 and kia picanto were a hard choice to choose between them, the i10 did win for me because the back was looking better. Easy controls/menu to navigate around. Responsive driving, should be expect from a new car at this age. Didn't had trouble passing other cars when i had to. If you would like a small economic car that has the entire package i would say this is one of the best choice to go, i compared it with the toyota yaris/kia picanto/opel corsa and the i10 felt like it was meant for me, had better materials inside compared to the kia, better looks than the yaris, more realiable engine than the opel. That's how i ended up buying it.

Wifey & me have both owned our Celerios since 2016 & in that time they have proved themselves to be utterly reliable, practical & remarkably fuel efficient (a consistent 70 mpg come rain or shine). In that time I've also driven the Up! (what a pathetically weedy engine) & the I-20 (it drinks petrol like an alcoholic sinks booze). Matt's right...you don't get what you haven't paid for & we all know who paid for this glowing review of the Up!

I don't understand how he made the Volkswagen the winner because he said it was only doing 42 miles per gallon and the back windows don't open and it had the smallest boot and it was the most expensive .. and then at the end of the test he says the Volkswagen up was the winner ??? Sounds all a bit biased to me especially when Suzuki and Hyundai always finish much higher up car reliability tables than Volkswagen.

I can't understand "power for overtaking on the motorway" ? the i10 for instance will cruise at 80 all day long at about 50mpg, you do not overtake on a motorway, but you can go faster than other cars if you wish. However the 1248 motor will overtake easily coming off islands on dual carriageways, often needing care because 90 is no problem either. Funny thing, very surprised by 1litre i10, 3 cylinder rental in Spain, went up the big hills at 60+ much better than the bigger engine. Still only 50mpg though.

The VW gives you the smallest car at the highest price with an overengineered engine, which will cost you a fortune if the turbo breaks down. The Suzuki offers the most space at the lowest cost but it looks a little bit lame and the interior looks really cheap. The Hyundai offers a good design, good space and an engine without a turbocharger. So it is not the cheapest but it is cheap, has no expensive parts that tend to break and it has 5 years of warranty without any limitation. For me, that's the winner. What Mat Watson forgets is that these cars are not meant to be a sports car. Usually, they are just used in cities, not on motorways. I got an i10 last year for my way to work. It replaced my BMW 318i touring, which I still have but I didn't want it to go 200km every day. The only thing I missing is the space if I have to transport big stuff. But here I am talking about really big stuff. The Hyundai can also take 2m boards as long as the width is not too big or some Ikea stuff. I am getting close to 50000 km now and I'm still happy with my car.

I'm a prospective small car buyer and this review was pretty useless. What does "it holds up on the motor-way" even mean and why do you compare a turbo-charged car with normal cars? If I wanted horsepower, I'd buy a bigger car. Also, storage space isn't as important in small cars. Again, if I needed storage space, I'd simply buy a bigger car.
@gratigo12 жыл бұрын
If someone has to buy a small car, wouldn’t they want the best small car they could get? I think cargo space and keeping up with the pace of traffic are important in any car you buy… especially if you do more than just urban driving. And not everyone has the option to just buy a bigger car.
@salehalsayaad2 жыл бұрын
You actually talk quite opposite to what you claimed! Which is quite surprising bcuz a small car-buyer must definitely care about storage space! Cuz that's what's a hatchback is about in the first place! A tiny car to save fuel that can be converted into a huge cargo when needed!

Futurebreeze I didn’t know it at the time but the sort of driving I do around London consists of constantly slowing down and accelerating which makes it really bad. On the motorway I get around 45 even when revving it a lot

The thing here is, I am looking for the most fuel economic car that I can find for city driving. It doesn't have to be fancy, it doesn't have to be fast, it doesn't have to have loads of space. All it has to do is get me to work and back as economically as possible. I have my eye right now on the Hyundai I10 unless somebody can suggest something else better??? I am open to suggestions.
@pom25845 жыл бұрын
Renault twizy would be great but it doesn't have any doors so maybe the celerio or dacia sandero would be good.

The Volkswagen Up looks good, but the problem is that its made by Volkswagen and their service and reliability is terrible so the i10 wins this test really because Hyundai is fine.

I just traded in my 2010 Golf for an i10. The rear brakes on the Golf got jammed on three times in one year and went on fire. Luckily following motorists alerted me to the problem all times but that was it for me and a newer Golf was just too damn expensive for me only doing 50 miles a week so an i10 at half the price with a good spec was a no-brainer.

problems is pricing, the Up is by FAR the most expensive one, both used and new. I think the I10 has the advantage when it comes to pricing esp if its 2-3 years old and below 50k kilometers driven. Its just not posible to get an up with the same type of extras for as little as the I10. At least not in this country. The suzuki, is horrible i am tall and the only one i couldnt fith into was the Suzuki Celerio.

@oddities-whatnot6 жыл бұрын
That VW interior looks like a hospital waiting room. The Hyundai looks good, looks a solid car and also has a good warranty. The Celerio is a cheap car and Matt clearly doesnt like it but you have to remember, not everybody needs or wants one of these bloody infotainment screens that seem to be getting stuck in every car these days, and dont forget, the more tech, the higher the price. I listen to the radio, I dont need sat nav or bluetooth or apple connectivity etc etc, and electric mirrors are a waste of money. Once you set them so you can see properly, you never use the controls again, so whats the point ? People are so gullible for the latest trends, fashions and gadgets, and car makers know they can sell more cars if they put as much of this crap in them as possible. I got a new Abarth 500 a few years ago and the salesman was going to show me how to connect my phone up but I said im not interested, I didnt buy it for that. They seem to think we all want toys to play with. I buy a car for the driving experience. I often see drivers on the motorway when stuck in traffic, fiddling with the screens, their phones (which I happily point out to them), slurping drinks you name it everything but concentrating and thats half the problem these days.

I have the previous gen Picanto with a 1.0 liter engine, which is piss-poor. Overtaking is a nightmare. And don't even think of maintaining 120 Km/h on an incline. Rather buy an older car that has better performance! These cars are good if you're *never* going on a highway.
@edancase88187 жыл бұрын
i think thats why there called city cars because they have no power and are only ment for quick trips around town, my fucking hamster running on a wheel produces more power than one of those!!

Yeah but unless you live in one of the densest cities in the world you'll have to get on a highway to get to certain areas in a reasonable amount of time.

I think you are wrong about the steering feel of the celerio and i10. Hyundais usually have the lighest steering wheels which render no! feedback. Whereas the celerio is still weighted somewhat. The response of the celerio might not be good enough but it atleast has feedback

I have the car for you. Toyota Yaris 2003 1.3. They go for 1k. This is my current car and I love it. It’s not slow and is very reliable. It’s also bigger inside than you think. Get a T3 spec. I average 42 mpg. 37 in London. If you drive at 50mph you’ll get high fifties. It will also do comfortable cruising at 70 80 mph. 0,60 mph is 11 secs which is decent. If you don’t care about that sort of thing then go for the 1.0 litre.

Had the i10 for a year - no problems - and can confirm it's a very nice solid quality feeling car. It also has the advantage of having a smooth quiet 4-cylinder 1.2L engine - vs the rough and rattle of the 1L 3-cylinder Up! engine.
