There seems to be some confusion about what makes a Cupra a genuine K1 and there have been 2 comments so far stating that this car isn't one. If you go to this SEAT website and put the reg in, it will tell you if it's a genuine K1 or not and this one most definitely is (and they should know, right?)

Totally agree with the title..Leon FR's have grown on me over the past 5 yrs..After all..they're a bit like Dr. WHO..its the same engine..different body over the top. Same bits..identical performance etc. I really like them..equally as much as golfs these days..(and thats sayin' summut)....Its a pleasant tough choice ATM between a MK5 GT TDI 170 or a MK2 Leon FR TDI 170..between 06/09.. The lines over the arches are so smooth and grown-up bad-boy..and the trim is mint inside..My mate had one and it must've been about 230bhp..It kept up with..and/or beat most petrol hot hatches that were similar....Quality with the K1/BTCC/Supercopa kit on..The seats on your model are similar to the FR-550 version..Oh Decisions..decisions....:)...

I had 1 5 years ago, and loved it, bought it with 45k at £6500 and 4 years late sold it back to seat for 5k at 90000k miles and bought cupra 280 day and that is a beast . Loved them both still have the 280

The facelift from 2010 is a bit better inside. If you are used to VW or Audi then it's poor but compared to Ford and Vauxhall I think it's there or thereabouts the same.

@@volkswizard I had a mk5 Golf Gti and then a Audi A3 sport Tdi which spoiled me for car interiors, I saw the facelift 2010 one with the Golf mk6 wheel and radio and they do look a lot better, always look for a good interior in a car as you spend more time inside that than you do looking at the exterior, the new shape Leon interior is excellent and would look out for one next time I change car as now its also a 3 door

My wife had a mk5 golf as a company car back in 2007. When she replaced it in 2009 she got a brand new Leon as we wanted to save money. Yes the Golf felt like better quality but it had a rattle in the dash that was annoying and could not be traced. The Leon didn’t rattle and we bought it after the lease had expired.

Great watch as always with volkswizard content! A friend of mine hasrecently purchased a k1 and I've previously owned a nice ed30, so I agree with you on most parts. The ed30 wins hands down for me though overall especially with having the option of dsg, the k1 is still a very nice car though

I owned a near identical Cupra to this. To me it felt more special than a golf and great on track. Engine is a masterpiece mine was stock and was putting out 267 Bhp on the dyno.

volkswizard the dyno I used was at a revo specialist who owned a K1 from new, he explained that even after 2000 miles his was making high 250’s many of his customers obtained similar figures with these K04 engines (de-tuned from an S3...🤔 hmmm I’m not so sure)

here in sweden the cupra r, yeah not the same as the cupra but comes with 265 like the S3 and we also have the normal cupra with 240. I'd still pay the extra for a cupra R idk why.

Personally, I quite like the rather outlandish colour scheme, race-inspired kit and flared arch look, but then I've owned some marmite cars over the years, so find 'different' appealing. Sure there is a void in interior trim quality, but pound for pound enjoyment/performance and value for money, it has to be a very strong contender. That said, you'd need to get that and embrace the 'difference' if a die-hard VW GTI enthusiast perhaps.

Great Q car to some extent albeit yellow paint and body kit give away Cupra status - Spanish Volkswagen’s not imported into Australia since 2000 which is a shame as mark v GTI hold their value so well despite DSG foibles and this is a great alternative - great video:)

Plus would be carrying the little one around too. But am a big fan of the Seat Cupra as great value for money, looks cool and it's easy to maintain as same as any VAG car. 👍

It's a pity you can't drive a car like this without hassle - there are still some places in the UK but not cities. I want a Mk3 Cupra badged FR & TSI in a dull colour, maybe even estate body, that should do the job!

I do think these cars where always a bit marmite. Personally I’ve always loved the look of the K1 to the point I did really want one at one point. My only issue with them is the dashboard, they are very bland for me. Ideal car if you are wanting a track project as the price difference is huge as you said plus, if anything does go wrong your not ruining a nice sort after car in the edition 30.

Andrew, that one looks a fine example of the mark, in the right colour too, the Seat is a very good car, like the GTI of that era they can scratch a bit getting them off the line in the wet. Still a good car though.

Hey Alistair, I think the nearly new Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres and dry warm roads make the most of the car's relatively limited traction. Not sure what it would be like in the wet with no VAQ differential of the Mk3 Leon? Probably still a lot fun 😁

They are lovely cars. You forgot to mention all the bits you get for the price that i don't think are on the GTI as standard: Hill start, rain sensors, electronic differential. you did mention the folding mirrors and they are heated. the sat nav unit you have in there looks like my old one that i swapped for an android unit ( to get Google maps. Better than Waze would you believe) and that old unit has bluetooth. I am quite sure the one in your car has also. that was standard. I even like the windscreen wiper position. They got rid of all that in the MK3 which is a shame and the discreet rear passenger door lock so the MK3 stock looks very plain. Instagram shows beautiful examples of all the Cupra ranges though. Thanks for commenting. Are you talking about a pre-facelift Cupra like this one? This car doesn't have hill start (nor does the GTI), rain sensors are standard on Mk5 GTI (bundled with auto lights). There is no electronic differential on pre-facelift Cupra, the facelift got XDS - the Mk5 GTI didn't get this but the Mk6 did. This car definitely doesn't not have Bluetooth.

I bought the Facelift version brand new in 2010. The interior on that was a step up from the pfl. I loved mine! And with a Stg1 tune it was pretty damn quick!!

Nice video! I have a stage 2+ Cupra k1 as a fast road / track car. There isn't much that can keep up with it on track! Lose some weight, add an LSD, decent suspension to run alongside the power and they are truly an amazing car. not much, if anything can offer the performance for the cash.

Values don't show it (as it lot cheaper to buy) but do like these Leon's (FR/Cupra) as bumper value for money even if ignored and Mk5/6 Golf GTI favoured more. Keep looking at them, my partner has a 2010 Leon (facelift that came post 2009 the car featured) 1.4TSI 125ps Sport (sport become FR) you can really feel the handling of the chassis/sure footedness and comparing every bit as good as same spec age Golf, you can feel my partner's 1.4TSI 125psi really does use only a fraction of its abilities compared to the more powerful ones that must use the chassis so well. Do think in some ways the MK2 Leon FR/Cupra far more special as "thinking man choice" but badges what they are GTi VW will probably always command more money. The thing now is many of the performance MK2 Leon's left are now 2012 as youngest and mid to late 2000 ones many miles on the clock - Andrew do you feel these MK2 Leon's can be trusted to the stellar miles that MK5/6 GTI tend to have??

I don't see any durability difference between Leon and Golf with the same engine as the parts used are the same. The only variable is the owners and how they drive and service their cars, by all accounts Seats seem to get more abuse and there were fewer sold I'd imagine. All I can say is that if Mk7 Golf GTI & R prove as durable we'll be lucky - going by their clutch life I am not convinced.

@@volkswizard good point, think as part of it as you say fewer numbers of performance Leon's sold to number of performance Golf's. Seat's seem to get less cared for maintenance wise and abused than equivalent VW does (not sure why people do that both marques deserve equal care). Going by some of the issues and failures around VW vehicles MK7 Golf onwards not as you convinced myself reliability is quite what is was with VW products.

My friend has a yellow one but it's a Leon cupra r version running about 380bhp still on stock turbo and clutch. Bought it about a year ago on 37k mint condition. The seats on the cupra r are on a completely different level

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but that red and black armrest is a genuine Seat accessory! That particular colour was discontinued a long time ago though. An all black one costs around 160 quid today.

In simple terms FR uses a ko3 turbo and cupra has ko4 so bigger injectors etc

Now tuned , in hindsight , stage 1 would have been fine , but its now stage 2+ , Also had a2 tdi , a4 pd130 , golf 25th petrol and diesel , s3 8l , A3 3.2 , t5 , t5 california , t4 tdi’s , golf 5 gti , a6 2.7 tdi manual , passat 2.0 tdi , golf 2 gti grant motorsport 8v , golf 2 gti 16v , corrado vr6 , golf 3 16v Love the channel !!!!!!

I want a project car and I think the mk2 Leon sport 182bhp will do... It's basically detuned 2.0tfsi from 198bhp to 182bhp and you can pick one up with 60k miles for £2.5k😉👌 This engine could do approx 260bhp stage1😅😅😅 with better air filter and bigger exhaust... Which is maddnes really and it would be such a sleeper😈 What do we think?

Good car. Review the 1.8tsi seat Ibiza cupra. Only comes in manual and was released in 2016. Don’t see many 1.8tsi’s about at all. They are great cars and surprise a lot of people. Proper little pocket rocket with 200bhp as standard from the factory, very tuneable as it has the EA888 engine.

@@volkswizard stage 3 clutch. Its making 340 hp and almost 500nm of torque. A got the stage 3 clutch in case of me wanting more power in the future. 100 more hp, you can see a good deference 🙂

I'm sure you are wrong! Mechanically it's 100% the same apart from centre exhaust. This review uses the original press release and doesn't not state anything else changed. www.topspeed.com/cars/seat/2008-seat-leon-cupra-k1-ar53128.html The K1 changes have been discussed in depth all over the SEAT forums for years so have a search and you will see. It does run a K04 turbo and it does have big brakes (bigger than Edition 30 for example) but so does the standard (non K1) Cupra. 👍

Good video but I don’t get the point of it as a genuine k1 will cost you now day 9k-12k so there no cheaper that edition 30!! And just a note the bumper on the car in the video is wrong for a genuine k1 it’s off the later super copa

Hi James, others have said that about the bodykit being wrong how does it differ? It wouldn't surprise me if it's been replaced as these things happen (rest of the paint including bonnet looks original). The car was originally owned by SEAT UK so that might explain inconsistencies. The point of the video is that the Mk2 Cupra is a dynamic match if not better than an Edition 30 for a lot less money. I say at the start of the driving bit, forget the K1 bit. I see K1s advertised at over £10k but from my professional experience with this one (whether K1 or not though Seat Insurance list is as a K1..), the sellers are being stupidly optimistic especially in the difficult trading conditions we are currently experiencing.

volkswizard pretty much like you said the side grills are different not 100% on this but I think there bigger on the bumper you have got but looks wise there different . And I get that bit of the video but k1s iv seen change hands for are up the 10k and over mark ! The only way to tell a genuine k1 for a cupra with the kit stuck on is emailing seat uk with the reg and vin and they will confirm weather it’s genuine or not ! That’s what I did with mine

Agreed but drive it hard and you forgive that - but I do understand that real world driving involves a lot less exciting driving and cabin ambience is crucial especially if carrying passengers - hence why I personally wouldn't buy a Hyundai i30N however good they are to drive (and they really are!)

Owned an FR 2.0 with DSG and it's a capable car, ride was a bit firm though and the interior is quite a bit worse than the Golf. Otherwise, not a bad car.

IMO the facelift 59/10 plate interior looks miles better than the golf, get the golf head unti and wrap the dash black..looks mint like

@@cupra2Jock. The face lifted interior is a lot better, I found the red dials hard to read at night and I think they rectified that with the facelift. The dashboard material and door cards are still pretty crap quality though. We also have a Mk2 Fabia and that felt better built in that regard. Saying that the Leon interior is definitely less boring than the Golf!

Also the speekers are very weak in the leon which is another down fall i suppose but you can always get uprgraded tweeters and sound system. Looking to get a mk2 cupra this coming month only 19 and the insurance is 1700 quid. Bargain if you ask me hahaha

@@t5jerry it's the gimbal (stabiliser) motor that's the camera sits in - that was the first film in literally years I made using the GoPro internal mic - if you look at earlier vids you will see I use a clip on mic. I was hoping to make filming less grief doing this but the noise is the downside. I will try and pad it out in the future to try and avoid the noise transfer.

Exterior is great! Interior on the k1 is rubbish. Mind you, the cupra r, facelifted, is a much better place to be. Diamond stitched seats, flat bottom wheel, digital climate control etc and you dont get that nasty looking gear knob

K1s were never made in yellow, that will be a Cupra with a K1 body👍🏼

I'd love to but I'd be doing all the same things I did to my Edition 30 and needing all the same bits I gave away for very little extra over the price I'd have got for a standard car. Plus I need to move on and MQB Leon Mk3 will be my next track car for sure so stay tuned - when they hit £10k it's gonna happen 👍

Read the title, watched no more than the first 20 seconds and the radiator grill and light set at the front is horrid and the back end, well, it looks like it's taking a dump and prolapsing out of that single exhaust hole through the middle. Not much thought needed, the answer is no already. "They really did make a great effort...**pause...slams glovebox 3 times before it shuts properly**...with this car.".
