It's tradition for most schools to have their third years step down after the first tournament of the year, and focus on their studies for university, letting the second and first years build chemistry. So unless the teams are actually competing for nationals or the third years plan on continuing volleyball and pursue a pro career, they are told to focus on their studies by their councellors.

So the way highschool sports work in Japan, there are 2 tournaments per year. One is at the start of the school year and one is towards the end. The first one is called interhigh tournament and the second one is called the spring tournament. A lot of third years (the ones who are in their final year) will drop out of the volleyball club after the interhigh to focus on their college exams if they won't do volleyball professionally cause they think it wouldn't be worth it. But in karasuno's case, the players are so passionate they still wanna play nevertheless.

In the beginning when Oikawa is talking to Ushiwaka he calls him "Ushiwaka-Chan". Chan is an honorific used for cutesy things like a puppy or a little child. Its pretty inappropriate for Oikawa to call him that because they are the same age and Ushiwaka is clearly uncomfortable with it. As for the tournaments there are two national tournaments each year each with their own qualifier. The start of this episode takes place in June with the summer national tournament being hosted in August with Shiratorizawa being chosen as the representative for their prefecture to go. Now Karasuno is going to start training for the second national tournament. The qualifiers start in October, with the actual tournament beginning in January.
@Revoltine3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's more of the honorific being very informal, not an age thing (you use it as if it's a pet name and can call others that so long as it's with consent and you're close to the person being referred to), and the fact that Oikawa and Ushijima are not even remotely friends. What Oikawa's doing is actually very rude and condescending and you know how much of a stiff stick Ushijima is.

I think when someone says "I have no regrets in life" it doesn't mean that they didn't regret anything ever, but more like that they've learned to accept their mistakes and learned from it, rather than mourning over it and constantly saying to yourself "If only I had done this like this and that".
@sheelaflower3 жыл бұрын
I actually think it means that they wouldn't do anything differently if they could do over. At least that's what it means for me. Because yeah, I did a lot of dumb shit in my life and that caused a lot of painful stuff that looking back on, I'd really rather forget. But everything I did, including the awful and stupid and cringe and regretable things brought me where I am today and I love where I am today. I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. So while there are definitely things i wouldn't want to do again, I don't regret having done any of them because if I hadn't, I wouldn't be here.
@Sheechiibii3 жыл бұрын
I think youre both right. When it comes to regrets I usually feel like I don't have them: making mistakes helps you grow into the person you are now, so looking back and 'wishing I'd done it different' which is what regret is, seems pointless to me. If I removed those things, I'd never have learned from them in the first place in order to feel as though I should have done things differently. So it seems pointless to wish I'd been different in the past, if I were to go back in time I'd still make the same mistakes because the point is I didn't know better at the time and the reason I do now is due to those bad experiences others might call 'regrets'. That's the way I see it. Learning from mistakes instead of wishing they'd never happened is the way I try to view it.

There are two major national-level tournaments for high school volleyball: The Inter-High and the Spring Tournament. Only one representative from Miyagi - the prefecture in which Karasuno plays - can go to each tournament. This entire first season revolved around the preliminaries to determine the Miyagi representative for the Inter-High. The winner of Shiratorizawa vs Aoba Josai will go to the Inter-High nationals. The Spring Tournament is even bigger and more prestigious, so there's even an additional round of qualifiers. The Nationals of the Spring Tournament don't take place until January, but the prefectural qualifying rounds take place in August, and the preliminary rounds to determine the prefectural representative take place a few months after that. So there's a lot of time between each set of games. Shiratorizawa is and always has been the top dog in Miyagi, pretty much always winning the prefectural tournament and going to nationals - and they've been especially dominant under Ushiwaka. Sorry for paragraph, but I hope that makes some sense. TLDR: there's a lot of volleyball :D. Thanks for an amazing first season of Haikyuu goodness, Coach.

I was partially expecting coach to say he was making these for the views but hearing that he loves making them made my morning! Thank you for all your hard work, my volleyball skills and knowledge have grown tremendously since subscribing to your channel .

To be honest I was only able appreciate the intricate details on the animation after watching your reaction videos. Watching your reaction videos brings another kind of thrill because i know I'm gonna be able to learn new things from them. Keep up the excellent work coach

I have been waiting for you to react on this very as with Suga's moment on extracurricular vs academics thing as an educator and all. As someone who came from an area where academics is above everything else, it feels refreshing to think that life isn't only in the four corners of classroom as what older people in my area oppose on the idea of extracurriculars. Thanks Coach Donny for the episodes you react, it's one heck of a Rollercoaster journey of learning something new that it feels like rewatching this series again with a friend. I hope you enjoy the next seasons to come!

In Japan (based on what I've gathered from this and other sports anime) the third years on a team generally leave the team after the first major tournament so that they can focus on studies and preparation for college.

My toughest loss was at volleyball tournament when I was a junior (11th grade). We were playing the semi-final. I didn't start the game but was subbed in because the girl (senior) who played the same position (opposite hitter) was not getting the timing of the block. I managed to help fight back, but it wasn't enough to for us win. Maybe a little selfish thinking on my part, but it still hurt that I couldn't be the "hero", I guess.

7:05 its not really the fact that he combines the 2 names of wakatoshi, but more the -chan afterwards, since the suffix -chan is mainly used for girls, kids, animals and is really informal.
@serenecj3 жыл бұрын
'Chan' adds a 'cutesy' vibe but while Oikawa is totally a pompous douche, I don't think he actually does this to be disrespectful. I think it's one of those anime character differentiation things. His preferred honorific for literally everyone is chan. Including all of his teammates. Iwa-chan. Makki-chan. Kyoken-chan(sp). With the exception of Matsukawa who gets Matsuun and I think that is even cutesy-er. Most everyone calls Ushijima "Ushiwaka". Just a sports short moniker like calling Michael Jordan MJ

I used to enjoy just watching reaction videos for the sake of seeing someone's shock or excitement for a certain moment, but your reaction series for Haikyuu has been a breath a fresh air. I never got into volleyball, or many sports for that matter, but there's something so interesting about listening to how you break down plays and go into technique or mindset. I love the anime, but you add so much to it with your reactions which I feel like most reactors don't. I'm hyped to see what you think about season 2

what coach said about passions being important too was great, and its especially something that i think a lot of asian families in particular don't really understand (coming from a chinese family myself, and having seen a lot of friends have to give up their passions in favor of academics) i think people underestimate how important it is to participate in extracurricular activities like sports or clubs. you learn a lot of soft skills that you dont get taught in academic classes, and for sports especially you learn how to be more resilient and how to push through setbacks. even though i ultimately went to design school (so shout out to coach for mentioning all the animation tidbits and camera shots, those always make me super happy to see and hear), im still a very athletic person and i think that has only helped me in the long run!

About Hinata changing direction of his spikes. The thing is that he can control the direction if he hits normal quick with opened eyes. But he cannot do the same when hitting his super quick with closed eyes. So if blockers catch the direction of super quick (like Seijo did at the last point), the attack will likely get blocked.
@seekittycat3 жыл бұрын
*Minus the time he did the quick staring into Oikawa's eyes. Literally just instinct though.

soooooo excited for season 2, season 1 is super important to set up alot of plot points, character arcs, interactions, backstory, etc, but season 2 expands so much from there and the character growth is just absolutely incredible, i wanna point out specific incoming events lol but no, no spoilers :3 just know it's gonna be GREAT

This is by far one of Coach Donny's best reaction. I really love how you discussed the importance of sport. There are still a lot of people (especially Asian parents) that underestimates the great lessons that the sport has taught us. Being in a team sport will not only make you healthier physically. It will also teach you humility, kindness, selflessness, resilience, and a lot of things. One important lesson that it taught me is that it's not always all about winning, but how you played the game. The journey, the time spent with your team mates, the lessons learned, will always be the best memories that imo, any player will keep in their hearts for the rest of their lives.

In this anime, they have national tournaments twice a year.
@starryabigail29883 жыл бұрын
One is Inter High (which is the one they competing for in Season One), the second one is Spring tournament
@vdinh1433 жыл бұрын
So because of that, losing here at Interhigh regional does mean Karasuno misses out on their ultimate goal: playing the national tournament in Tokyo. But they get another chance later with this roster before the 3rd years graduate.

So the next arc in the story is called “Summer of Evolution”, and I’m excited for you to watch it because you keep saying how Hinata needs to evolve, and you are exactly right! Thanks for doing this, it’s super enjoyable to watch these videos, and also super awesome to get a vb insider’s perspective on it all.

Coach Donny, the reason why the ball type keep changing from mikasa and molten is because both of the brand sponsors this anime. So it is like they are try to make the brand has equal show time.

For Coach Donny and anyone else who's wondering about the nickname Ushiwaka, it was the name of a famous samurai military leader and from around 1100 AD. By combining Ushijima's first and last name, they're playing on that to make an intimidating nickname. There's a part in Season 3 (I think) where Hinata calls another player on Shiratorizawa "Benkei", and is surprised when that isn't his name. It confused me because they didn't explain it, but Benkei was a warrior monk who became Ushiwaka's retainer after being defeated by him in a duel. Maybe not the most essential information, but I thought it would be fun to share!

I recommend watching the "Lev Genzan OVA after Season2 Episode 4. Even though it happens before season 2, it may spoil the introduction of characters in the main series. Coach Donny could just watch the OVA as a flashback.

The conversation the third years are having is because typically the second half of the year the third years retire from the club to focus on exams to get into college some powerhouse teams like seijoh and shiritorizawa don’t but the karasuno third years need to make that decision

This series was recommended to me by a friend. The moment i got hooked was when they lost to seijoh, i said "i have to watch season 2". I was looking forward to seeing Coach's reaction soley for the fact that i wanted to see the exact moment. I was excited to see the moment he got hooked to this anime. Obviously there's always a high chance of him not liking it (which does not seem to be the case as my big brain has deducted). There's also moments that can hook you further on, but in my opinion those aren't as impactful as season 1's loss. The main reason for that being that many people would drop the show if they didn't like it early on, so I feel the first season had to be impactful. there's probably many people who wouldn't stick around to see those other moments. Either way i'm grateful i got to see his reaction regardless of people spoiling it (though I may harbor some negative feeling towards them but i'll stay positive and be patiently waiting for his next reaction, or jump training video since that's all i can practice).
