The first time I saw him sing this, I cried. To see such anguish and loss in his face brings the knowledge to the viewer of all the misplaced love he spent a lifetime trying to recapture. Saw this movie for the first time a couple of months ago and have watched it probably 10 times since. It has quickly become of my favorite films of all time. HDS was perfect in this role, and that role was perfectly tailored for him. You can't ask for a better farewell to the screen for this legendary actor. Known through his career was a great supporting actor, he nailed the lead here. Fade to black.

In real life, Harry Dean Stanton was a very interesting guy. A life very well lived. He didn't shy away from allowing other cultures to influence him, especially the music. He was friends with many prominent musicians, including Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Hearing an old man sing this song from his soul just gives it so much more meaning. Reminds me of when Johnny Cash covered songs like "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and "In My Life" by The Beatles. "Volver, Volver" is a beautiful song that gets relegated too often to drunk people singing it for entertainment purposes. Not trying throw any shade though. People singing together in fellowship is often a good thing. But I like this version better. Well done, Mr. Stanton.
