Thank you, unfortunately there was too much rust on this car and would have cost a fortune to replace panels and sills and weld them up so has been retired to the scrap yard. RIP Betsy!

Good video, but might it have been a bit easier if you cleaned the calipers off before you started working on them?

I would have liked to spend more time cleaning them up and maybe spraying them too but I had limited workshop time so the main goal was just to get them working again.

Judging by the thicker mounting lugs on the caliper these are Bendix. Girlings have much thinner lugs. Also, the twin pipe calipers you have are non-ABS. I have just had a massive learning curve with my wretched and very rare 1990 740 GLT (16v B234F) which is fitted with the rarest calipers in universe for the UK: twin-pot, single-pipe ABS Girling calipers. It finally failed the MoT on them. My local garage were sent replacements that look the same as yours but they don't fit the slider and are non-ABS despite showing up as 'compatible' for the car on parts lists. I have actually had to order them up from CVI Automotive in Sweden, the only people I could find with them and hopefully the saga will be over. Anyone with one of these cars be warned and double check what you have fitted: single pipe = ABS, twin pipe = NON-ABS.

Thank you for the info, I seem to be learning more and more about these classic Volvos. Hopefully you get yours sorted, although it’s not mentioned in the video I had the same problem with ordering the right size pistons, the first set were 1mm too big even though it said they were compatible so I had to order a second set before I could finish the job.

That union piece at 1:20 - haven't figured out why they are there... My 740 has them in the other front caliper but not on the other one... Brake hoses are screwed directly in the caliper.

I don’t know why it’s there but I’m glad it was, getting the brake hose off was much easier when I could take it off the car instead of trying to do it in situ!

hi very good video ,i tried to refurbish my front callipers but gave up i now have new front callipers in my 23rd year on my current volvo 940TIC auto 1995 model

Friend, I have a Volvo 740 gle from 1988, petrol and gas, it costs a lot to get it. I give the key several times and it won't start. I'm getting very sad, because it was a childhood dream to buy a 740. Please help me!

First check you have spark by taking out a plug and leaving it against the engine then turn the key and look for a spark. Then check the fuel is coming through, take off a fuel line near the injection system, turn the key and see if fuel pumps out. Then check air is not blocked and finally check compression is ok on the cylinders. Hopefully you will find a fault along the way and be able to fix it.

I’m not too sure, I don’t remember seeing any wording on them to say they were Girling calipers. I know they were hard work to fix though!
