My grandpa bought an Amazon in 1968. It was our car till 2016. I bought an Amazon wagon last year cos those cars will last a lifetime 👍👌♥

In 1964, I talked my family into buying a Volvo 122S 4 door sedan. That was the best car we ever bought. It was in the family for over 20 years. We drove it all over Europe (we were living in Belgium then), then in 1968, my Mom and Dad moved to California. The car was in California for a few years, then the family moved to Connecticut and took the Volvo with them. A couple of years later, my Dad called me and said that they had gotten another Volvo and asked if I would like the 122S. I said yes, and flew to Connecticut and drove the Volvo back to California. I wound up selling it to my cousin in the lase 80's, and a few years later, he managed to destroy it. If I still had it, the car would probably still be running.

I drive a 1966 122S daily, which was purchased new by my Grandfather. I was given the car when I was 16, and it was in bad shape. I fixed it up, and have been driving it for 41 years. I also have a 1965 220S Station Wagon as my second car, and have had it for about 25 years. I expect the Volvo's will last longer than I do, and that pleases me :) I don't really want any other car; although I wouldn't mind owning a PV544 or a P210 too.

The Amazon was also made in Canada in the Volvo plant that opened in 1963 ( Darmouth Nova Scotia ), and was sold under the name Canadian.

1:44 The one with number plate PV454 bears more than a passing resemblance to the 1953-'54 Studebaker with its sloping nose and divided grille, and even the conical wheel covers with concave centers. A striking look.

Yes, the grills look similar to the '53-'54 Studebaker Champion, and other Studebaker models through about '62 ...

I currently own a '66 Amazon and really love it. It's a great conversation starter and readily puts a smile on my face every time I take it out. It certainly isn't the fastest car on the road, but any more it's one of the more unusual cars and gets tons of compliments and thumbs up.

Volvo sold well in Australia 🇦🇺 The model I recognize in the early years looked like an Amazon, but it probably had another name (122S). Popular for Rallies too, as Australian rural roads are very harsh on car suspensions and have lots of dust covered potholes.

The second last Amazon ever made today is in The Danish Technical Museum in Elsinore/Helsingør, as Denmark was a large market for those, till the end. It still has the clear protective plastic on the seats and only the few kilometers from being driven down from Götheborg. Sadly I never managed to look at Volvos own Museum.

Interesting, I might have a look at that Danish Volvo Amazon some day. There is or has been a white 1970 Amazon in perfect condition on display at the Volvo Museum in Göteborg. It even has number plates, so I guess it is driven on special occasions.

I have never owned an Amazon, but I have owned a 240, 245, 740, 760, 940, 960, 850, v40, v70, XC90 and now drive a 19 year old XC70 2.5cc cross country. Volvo made great ICE cars, and my next will have to be a Volvo Polestar EV.

Visited a Saab dealership in 1968 and in talking with the mechanic found that Saab had an absolute warrantee on their motor. No matter why it went bad they would replace it at no cost. Amazing. I wonder if they still do that.

I had an Amazon 1969 made in Sweden and sold in Canada as ''122S'' and loved it. Then had Volvo 142E and 164E.. to finally switch to Saab. I drove many 99, 900, and am still driving my Saab 9-5 2008. This car is a dream and I cherish it as some of my Saabs saved my life in a car accident..or two. Swedish security. I'd drive an Amazon proudly anytime. 😉

What I don't understand is how drivers coped in harsh Swedish winters with their heavy snowfalls in a rear drive vehicle such as the Volvo 122. No front drive. None of that. I LOVE the 122...please don't misunderstand, but driving a Volvo, as well as an early Saab, must have been some trip ( so to speak,) in deep snow there...especially in the outer country outside of Sweden's main city. Peace...🙏♐

Why are all the images of the older models in LHD when Sweden was RHD in that period? Surely Volvos were sold in Europe earlier than 1967 so were made in both RHD and LHD? Volvos were sold in my country Australia from at least 1961, so they were made in RHD prior to 1967 as no new cars have ever been allowed to be sold here in LHD.
@thecarswede
@thecarswede 2 жыл бұрын
Because the driving side of the road switched in the 60's, car manufacturers from sweden started making left hand drive cars for preparation, so that people didn't need to get a new car when it switched
@martintaper7997
@martintaper7997 2 жыл бұрын
@@thecarswede You're not answering my question. All the earlier models are LHD in your presentation, and Volvos sold in Australia (and Britain) prior to 1967 were RHD cars, so RHD cars were made by Volvo prior to 1967 yet I can see no RHD cars in all the earlier film and photos you have shown of the earlier models that drove on the left side of the road! Did Sweden make LHD cars and drive them on the left side of the road - that would have been unique and very strange. This video answers my question - Sweden made LHD cars and drove them on the left - a very strange thing to do and I believe unique. So your video is incorrect, they made RHD cars for export much earlier than 1967 and the change of road side drive in 1967 had no bearing on the cars that were made and were exported. We have both learned something today, that's good. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKmwhKCvm5uHbMU

Amazon is definately not a tank car, they rusted as much as any other cars from the period, despite being treated underneath, the engines went bust as much as on other cars as at least 60-70% of the Amazons has their engines exchanged already many decades ago etc, etc, I own an Amazon so I know what I'm talking about!!!
