Volvo C40 recharge 2023 Review | Australia

In this 2023 review Simone looks at the Volvo C40 recharge in its twin motor ultimate trim. Volvo as a brand are taking a more aggressive approach in their shift to full EV with all their cars being fully EV by 2026.
You have a choice between two powertrains. One is a single motor and the other is a dual motor. The single motor option called the Recharge Single Electric Motor sends the power to the front wheels and gives you 170 kW of power and 330 Nm of torque it gets you from 0-100km in 7.3 seconds. The battery is 69 kWh and has a WLTP rating of 434km of range.
We have the Recharge twin electric motor, having 2 motors allows it to be AWD it produces 300 kW of power and 660 nm of torque it's significantly faster than the single motor and skips to 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The battery is larger at 78 kWh and offers 420 km of range WLTP.
The listed charge time for this battery, on a 150 kWh fast charger is 40 mins. That will get you from 10-80%. The battery architecture is 400v and not as fast as the architecture we see in some other EVs which can offer related charging times in under 20 mins.
The pricing structure is very simple. The C40 recharge starts at 81,666 driveaway for the single motor and smaller battery Plus trim. You add $7979 to jump up to this ultimate trim. The total cost becoming $89,645 driveaway.

You can adjust the seat hight, the switch works as a 'rocker' so it enables you to lift the front or rear part of the seat separately. Also you can have the range displayed on the centre stack display too. According to Volvo, there is a roof shield in development for the Australian, and other hot country markets. Alternatively, you can have a window tint added to the glass roof panel

OTA software update 2.9 causes the estimated range to be displayed on the drivers display, right under percentage of battery remaining. It also allows lane-keeping to be toggled on and off with a previously-unused button on the steering wheel and permits Apple Carplay to be displayed on the drivers display.

Nice, but that unshaded glass roof is a total deal breaker. Looking at my novated lease options and could see that this car was in the bargain bin. This explains a lot.

That bargain bin is most likely the new regulation that exempted electric vehicles from fringe benetif tax, import tax, and all other discounts. even an MG ZS EV is cheaper in monthly repayments than a ICE car at the exact same driveaway price.

Seems like major faux pas from Volvo. Can't be too short to drive and not too tall for the backseat. There quite a few vehicles it seems where there is not much headroom in the rear. Form over function!

Unfortunately there are issues with this car as we recently purchased.. it’s already being repaired so one month in and we are driving an XC90 instead 🫤it was however a comfortable & quiet car to drive in when we purchased.

This Volvo C40 has a steering wheel vibration very bad when you drive 65 mph, Felt UNSAFE to drive, especially at high speeds. @Volvo, If you have a defective product, you need to take care of it, you know this is not the only one.

So what do we do with the batteries when they're done .... just let them leach toxins into the water table .....worry about that later and call the car company's green.

You do realise that when the btteries are replaced in a car, they don't get thrown away. They are still good enugh to be used in home storage. So if you are pessimistic, after 10 years, they go to a powerwall, then after anoher 10, they are recycled and almost all the precious metals are recovered. The recycling is alreeady happening today. Nothing like wrecking an ICE car and letting the oils leach into the environment. Hope that clears up your question :)
