My suburb has a local MG dealer. To draw people into the premises, a proper MG from about the 1960's takes pride of place where passersby can clearly see it. To be attempting to link the British MG's with the latest Chinese built models is very insulting to the public. My son has an MG and went for the 'oil drip' option, basically a calibrated control of drip per minute from a reservoir under the engine. He's also opted for the loud cranking rattle on starting (death knock) so fondly remembered from the good old days of Austin.

Stellantis are doing the same with the new Leapmotor T03, which they'll launch in the UK under the Vauxhall name. I love my 15yo Honda. It has no modern garbage that tries to take over the driving. It has no spyware or tracking or dodgy drive-by-wire crap. It's not lit up with screens and gadgets that I don't want or need and cost a fortune to repair. I like driving a manual and it has a nice 6 speed gearbox. It's as reliable as a brick and has barely cost me anything to maintain. Just tyres, batteries and servicing. For my money, cars only went downhill after that model was made so I've never been tempted to trade it in on anything new.

Re: ev's and the new Spirit of Tazzy ferry that will be launched soon. Late last year, 2023, I spoke to one of the current ranked staff and he told me that... The new Spirit will actually allow ev's, on one deck, there will be fire curtains everywhere around it ... and.. falk lifts. The idea is that if there is just one indication of smoke they will lower rhe ramp and quickly push every one of them into Bass Straight and keep going, they won't even stop the ferry. Yep, I think the best plan is to just NOT let them onto the ferry to start with, the risk/cost analysis is just not adding up.

Electrical fires, cars both electric and conventional getting swept away and battered by debris, stationary gas tanks also getting ripped off of their foundations and carried away and punctured, possibly meeting an electrical fire, also whatever damage happens to the gas main (which has been shut off, but still contains something), chemical facilities, hospitals and pharmacies losing all their contents in the water... A flood isn't just a water hazard, it always caused secondary hazards be it chemical, biological and even fires before EVs were a thing (it's simply become exponentially more likely), the fire hazard has only become much more significant as these vehicles apparently aren't rated to stay safe in the eventuality that they get dunked in water, or maybe the debris and the intensity of the water currents were enough for that not to matter as the casings were damaged. The risk of fire by flooding has always been there, simply doesn't help that these burning batteries can act as a firestarter for all the unlit fuel floating on top of the water, as it is resistant to getting put out by water. The solution? Well, which direction to go to mitigate the effects of climate change which is the cause of the weather becoming more extreme every year can be argued about, but cities that know are at risk of flooding should take every measure they can to harden themselves against floods, so you don't have water carrying around combustible material and burning EVs around. Regulations could mandate for a higher IP rating for EVs, so they are resistant to impacts, crushing, puncturing and water penetration which are all relevant in event of a flood and could severely reduce the fire hazard, if not the number of EVs in the streets.

Don't overreact,I'm pretty shure that in natural disasters gas pump stations quickly run out of fuel or stop working altogether without electricity. If you have fully charged EV in that case you're king of the road plus your car don't waste energy idling in long cues and is most efficient in stop and go traffic which is almost inevitable in those situation - so it's not all that simple. Plus yes few EVs caught fire but all ICE cars get useless when flooded too. You can not drive ICE cars in deeper water and well-sealed EV might just be able to do that because it doesn't have air intake for the motor combustion like ICE cars.

This is what I have observed by being alive long enough. It is oil, not fossils. Petroleum is like water, there is plenty of it underground where we can not see it, but the PTB have control of it and tell you it is scarce, in decline, and you will have to pay more, you wasteful horrible person. Since the 70s, we've been told we are running out of oil, yet the populations and those who drive cars, have exploded in numbers, yet the flow of oil continues. The militaries of the world use countless amounts of oil per day. The plastics industry, which has exploded since the 70s, is entirely oil-based. The pharmaceutical industry is entirely petroleum based. If we have improved our extraction processes, then those diminished supplies should be long gone by now, yet the flow of oil continues.

Funny isn't it, my 15 year old diesel Jag has never missed a beat despite the naysayers telling me how unreliable they are. My neighbour bought a Chinese MG, while delighting in telling me I was stuck in the past after I advised him not to. In 8 months it has been back to the dealers 6 times, and for a total of almost 5 months - so they have had the car in their drive for just three months, and some of that time was waiting for it to be collected to go back to the workshop. What's really funny is that including the deposit he has now paid more than I paid IN TOTAL for my Jag in total 4 years ago, still has a piece of junk that most of the time doesn't work at all, and he doesn't own it while I could cash mine on for a few grand cash any time. 😂

Unfortunately it's the usually driver error when they confuse the accelerator pedal with the brake because their brain says need to stop press harder so they just keep pressing the accelerator pedal if you're lucky you do it in a field and you do doughnuts for about 20 seconds until you figure out you have to press the other paddle (happens to new or old drivers)

Hmmm. You say that, Automatic lane keeping, Automatic speed control, is fine. That’s what Autopilot is. FSD supervised will (mostly correctly) route you, lane change, enter and merge with traffic, understand traffic signals and intersection signage, make all required turns. Ultimately, someday, it will drive point to point, doorstep to destination including parking lots, with autopark. This driving system has a ways to go before Level 3 autonomy is achieved. The “Supervised” term is the definitive catch, implying the driver is ultimately responsible for safe driving. That means, don’t hit those surprising things in the roads like pot holes, water submerged curbs, parking lot access control gates, anything smallish suddenly running or falling into the road, confusing construction signs and temporary lane markings, the exceptions go on and on. Just like regular manual driving! Oh, and don’t forget that the FSD cannot “hear” things like emergency vehicle sirens, traffic control verbal commands or understand hand signals from construction crews or traffic control officers. Other than that, you’re good to go with FSD Supervised. Quite the adventure.

Back in the day, the plastic parts in the car's cabin, which included the dash frame, didn't have enough stabiliser and the ABS plastic disintegrated at about 10 years out . Costly and turned the car to junk. I wouldn't have a European car. Stick to the Japanese cars. Toyota and Honda.

Don't know about the US, but UK & and Europe have annual inspections. And it takes years for corrosion to cause a problem with ICE.

@@Renegade1127 Some states in the US don't have inspections. There's a multi-state zone in the US referred to as the Salt Belt where they salt the roads. With the same construction materials and corrosion protection, an EV will corrode slower than an ICE as there's no hot exhaust knackering the paint and undercoating under the car. The most common places for underbody rust are the wheelarches, sills and around the exhaust.

By the time they packed their cars after the evacuate order was issued they joined 4 hour queues to get fuel. Inevitability every servo in town was soon dry. Leaving many stranded without enough fuel to leave. I saw a Canberra family holidaying in the place across the road charging their EV as they packed it. No doubt they had smiles on their faces as they drove past those peeps waiting in long lines for fuel.
