Despite the weather I tried to move on to some more of the tasks waiting on the Volvo 740 but lifting the wet carpets had some unpleasant surprises..

Originally from Rugby. Two owners. Lovely and clean underneath, cleaned and treated with Waxoyl. Used to be regular visitor to Sheffield and Meredith Volvo experts in Leicester. Stainless exhaust last year (Scottish weather plays havoc with mild steel!), got some alloys in the shed for new tyres this summer. Speedo stopped at 198889 over 5 yrs ago.... not the cog (tried it, failed). Solid car, still boots along (wife drives it like a go-kart) at over 100mph. Nice service due this summer, fluids etc. just had new belts. All new discs and calipers two years ago. GREAT TIP.... rear disc dust shields are impossible to fit in one piece without removing rear drive shafts. CUT OUT A SECTION of the steel from the new ones to accommodate the rear calipers and bolt straight into place. Piece of cake.

Reminds me of the time my dad went through a ford that was to deep for the MK4 cortina took days to dry out with the carpet propped up with bits of wood he gave me car a year later my foot went through the floor unfortunately the water had got behind the mastic sound deadening and out came the welder

Hate to say I got some sadistic pleasure seeing you pull out that wet carpet and groan, because my Volvo 480 is a real rust bucket and I've poked quite a few holes in it. It is really hard to make the hole even bigger before you can repair it. But as long as my welding improves it shouldn't be a problem 🙂

Removing the rear seat is very easy. It’s only mounted at two spots. Start by dividing the seat in 4 equally sized areas in your head. On the front side of the seat, push the seat backwards and lift it up at the line between area 1 and 2. Repeat at area 3 and 4. Then pull the seat forwards.

make sure all the rubber grommets through the firewall are sealed proper or you will have the pool in the foot wells again. well done on not giving up on her yet.

The trials of old cars but well worth the effort. I took my entire tam leather interior out of my E-reg GLE. It was fairly easy but there was a few brittle panels to fix. And yes they always rot just in the same place - bit of a design fault. That underlay goes under the console, I had to cut mine to get it out. Great video and still a fabulous, wonderful car.

I remember my neighboour back in the 80ies when i was a kid doing constant repairs on his old Fiat 124. He was always welding and fixing something. Finally he painted the whole car infront his house with a paintbrush. Today it woul'd be incredible to see somebody doing that.

One thing to look out for in these cars are the relay driving the fuel pump. The solderings on the little circuit board inside the relay get cracks by time. Easy fix is to resolder all solder connections on the board and it will work another 20 years.

A similar thing occurred with the king lead on my 740 many years ago, but I had a spare one in the boot, so it wasn't out of action for long. Also, I'm eternally thankful to the Volvo gods that my example hasn't got any water leaks or crusty bits underneath, despite turning 30 years old this May.

Thank you for making this video. For sure my carpet was not in two pieces at the front and I had to remove the console, which is not as bad as it sounds. Watching you work out how to remove the front seats brought back memories! Now I always check for wet carpets when I buy a car, it’s not always a dealbreaker but I need to know when I buy a car, usually a giveaway is a car that as more than one air freshener and still stinks.

Leave the holes, they allow the water out! Seriously, these cars are perfectly adequate and roadworthy with a few holes in the floor. Out of 30+ Volvo's here in Australia I've only had rust in floors twice, they rarely have issues.

See if you can get some chlorinated rubber paint, coat the footwells in 1ltr of hammerite each and then apply the chlorinated rubber paint. solid!

I am Volvo mad. You have found one of the few problems on the 740...the seam sealer dries out on the seam in the middle of the footwells. They were galvanised from 1987. You have to try to kill these cars, they are so tough. People describe the engine as a 'petrol diesel' ...bulletproof, can stand abuse and will do a million miles. The best cheap fix for these cars is to fit a later expansion tank with water level sensor, so that if a hose blows or you spring a leak, you don't melt the engine before you notice the gauge. One recommendation I can wholeheartedly make for a Volvo of this age is Bosch multi-electrode spark plugs. I used them in my old, carburettor 244 and it improved the fuel consumption by a whole 5mpg and made it a whole lot livelier. This one is fuel injected so it probably won't make that much of difference to the mpg if everything is working right, but it'll still help and they do tend to be thirsty old beasts...

Against rust, use Owatrol rust inhibitor, search for it, it's used on boats and ships! Works very well use it on in or outside, Marvellous stuff.When you buy a new car for hollow spaces etc there is Mike Sanders grease, you warm it up and spray it hollow space etc Very good stuff.

Great to see more Volvo content! Glad the car's gone to somebody like you who's got all the equipment to get it repaired. Make sure you test to see how waterproof the car is before installing all the underlay and carpet. Door membranes, seals, window seals. Good that you've cleaned out the drains. My old MK4 Golf has developed a leak in the driver's footwell. Will try changing door seal (as that's worn, but I don't think it's that) but I think its possibly a blocked drain hole in the firewall somewhere, or a grommet that's shrunk with age. I'll also be checking for underbody plugs. More annoying than anything as I haven't had the time to look at it yet and noticed it about 3-4 weeks ago. We've also had a lot of rain since then... :\ Keep up the work with the Volvo! Superb motor car :-)

Oh jeah, the same as mine 740 from 1985 :D They rust the same. Check out the boot, there will be more rust comming ;) And It would be better to take front seats out, because underneath them will be more rust to come, and rear passenger floor to. And that floor mats and sound isolation will dry out perfectly....i hanged mine in a heted garage and everything is dry now with no mold at all.

Great video Matt--removing a carpet on a 30 yr car is an eye-opener. Have you looked at where the water has been getting in though as otherwise it will continue to flood,. It seems to me on the passenger side that you have rust in the firewall maybe where the electrics enter the cabin. This is a common problem on e30's and a nightmare to fix and the carpet is in one piece not four.

The HT lead going was probably badly corroded for a while and the power off the jet wash just separated it, done you a favour really, better better than it going while you are out in it somewhere. For the interior water check the drains under the scuttle panel. I have a 75 that sat for 2 years with them blocked. ended up for 3 inches of water inside the car. drain blocked and it overflowed into the car.

I couldn't live with the lack of a headliner. I'd have tried to source one ages ago TBH, would be doing my head in. Good effort though, keeping one of these old tanks going. My mate's dad had a 740GLE Estate back in the day, 2 cars crashed into it, both their fault, both were written off and all that happened to the Volvo was a scratched rear bumper & a broken headlight. Very comfortable aswell.

You cant get good used headliners, they all go the same and have to take out a windscreen to fit them, recovering is the only option, so Ill get to it, but after making it safe and dry!

The water usually gets in thru the windscreen seal... Mainly the front but I would check the rear as well. Also check where the inner fender meets the bulkhead.

Well, at least it's just water in your carpets. 😂 I had an explosive heater matrix failure in my Xantia, and even though I've fixed it many moons ago the carpets are still wet. That coolant just doesn't want to dry, and believe me I've consumed dozens of rolls of paper, ruined a good bunch of towels and spent half of my salary on electricity bills hoping that the heater would finally dry it. I suppose I'll just have to give up and remove the carpets entirely, hang them somewhere and rinse them with water until all of the coolant drips off. And hope I don't uncover any rust holes whilst doing that. It's nice to watch you work on the Volvo, great content!

@@furiousdriving It's definitely the old coolant on the floor as it's sticky and nasty instead of "just wet".. And I believe the leak is fixed since I'm no longer loosing any coolant and am getting mist-free heat. It's not absolutely soaking wet like your Volvo (I did look under the carpet!) but it just feels moist and slimy to the touch no matter what I do. I don't think there's rainwater involved either as I store the car in a garage. I'm sure I'll get it fixed eventually, hope you'll achieve the same with the Volvo!🙂

As a swede I would really reccomend you to take the seats out completely and remove all carpeting. You will find more stuff to fix. Becouse you have now found the 740 disease. And it will have spread!

Front carpets are out and rear lifted, the seats have weird wiring so cant come out!

Water in the footwell? Have a look at the heat exchanger diverter valve above the clutch pedal. Went on my wife's car. What a bloody mess and a sodding pig to refit.

So sorry you had to go through all that effort. I had a Renault scenic which threw all the rain and wet into the floor all because of debris making a dam which diverted the water until it was able to enter the car via the air vents so I know about soaking carpets, and now you do too. I had to remove everything out of the car, seats, carpets, took ages to sort out you have my sympathy which of course has no value to you. The person you bought the car from must have known about all this, and so must his garage. I hope you have a better time after this and look forward to the next episode

I bought a low mileage 1988E reg 740 Turbo in 1996 which looked immaculate and all the foot wells were ice rinks in winter. Not what you expect from a Volvo. Also it only averaged about 15mpg with my wife using it for commuting.

One of me pals recommends Cat Box litter ( Absorbent) to catch the moisture in auto upholstery. ( Also use it for Grit on Icy pavements in Canada, works a treat) Is that why the roof liner collapsed? Hmmmmm.... Cheers

I used to have a business where I made office chairs using the seats out of junkyard cars. My four most popular seats were, in order, the Volvo 240, Peugeot 505, Volvo 850, and Volvo 740. I have pulled several dozen 740s. All you have to do is undo the four big bolts, disconnect the heater wire if so equipped, and lift it out, plastic trim and all. You are dramatizing, methinks. Also, no actually, passenger side seats are rarely that grubby at the seat rail.

I know about the security lug in the centre and to slide it back but the central one didnt want to release, and the heater wires here although unplugged still go up inside the seat, so I think its failed in the past and someone has done a fix. Also I didnt want to risk marking the plastic trim as just tugging at them will scratch or snap things

I mentioned previously. They rust in the rear passenger footwell. That's the bad news. The good news it's easily fixed by welding in a new flat panel.

Blimey... if you hadn't repaired the floor sections, the old bus was in danger of becoming 'Fred Flintstone's' staff car. The rotted HT lead connector, I've seen on a Golf 1, I owned in SA for many years. Golf 1's, aka 'Citi Golf's' were resurrected as cheap runabouts by VW SA, from around '87 to 2004ish. Like your 740 my Golf cranked, turned, sparked but refused to start. Until I traced the HT connector to the distributor cap centre, and found it was green powder & air-gap 🙄 Lead trimmed and a new clip costing about 5p solved this issue.

Do you know how the wings are fixed on - is it easy to find all the bolts or are some hidden? I read about that online the other day, taking the wings off is the only way to really clear the blockages

Ref your wet carpets I'm wondering if this is a sun roof issue! I had a similar experience with a 98 Renault Laguna. Finally traced the leak to a broken rain channel pipe leading down from the sunroof tray through the N/S windscreen pillar. The rain water was running down inside the pillar directly onto the floor pan under the carpet. Not sure if it's the same system on the Volvo but might be worth a check by removing the inner trim lining on the pillar at the roof join. Good luck Neil

Its probably the sunroof on the Mercedes but this hasn't got one - its leaking all on its own... There are similar for the scuttle and they do the same trick

I feel your pain - water leaks - Grrr but stick with it. I'm not clear where the source of the leak or leaks were but if you can hunt it/them down you will have a car worth keeping or selling with a good future as the rest of the car seems in very good condition

if you have a dehumidifier put it in the car and shut the door, it will suck up all that water in a couple of days (edit) if you have more welding to do get rid of those little bottles and go for a hobby weld bottle or similar, it will work out a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run and get a peashooter style flow meter if you havent got one.
