I sold my V60 and bought a V90 now with 30,000kms. Did the rear brakes and same procedure worked. ACC (cruise control) eats up rear brakes on newer Volvo’s. This trick will save you hundreds $$$ by doing it yourself.

2015 XC70. Your 9V battery trick ROCKS! Positive goes to the round end of the recepticle, neg. to the square end. Takes about 60 seconds to wind the piston all the way in. THANKS!

Thank you for this tip and video. I have just done the rear pads on my V70 only to find that a previous owner or garage had stripped one of the Torx bolts which hold the EPB motor in place so I couldn't remove it. This video was posted in the comments of the video I watched on how to wind the EPB back manually and while I didn't have a 9V battery to make it work, I did have a spare 12v leisure battery which worked perfectly in its place. This video should be considered gold to Volvo owners and in fact anyone who has the similar style of EPB

Thanks for this - I was about to throw in the towel when trying to figure out if I was going to do this job myself. Other videos mention computer, disassembly of the motor, etc. I followed yours and it worked perfectly! BTW, for anyone watching once you disconnect the motor you'll see two obvious legs to attach the battery to - it's not inserting into a black hole as it appeared here (that was just his camera perspective).

There are very few videos that show this 9V battery trick - brilliant! I was hesitant to disassemble the EPB motor, as it is sealed with a rubber ring gasket. If that is damaged or doesn't seal tight, the motor can be contaminated. With the 9V battery trick, retraction is simple, fast and assures that the motor's intact. Thank you!!!

Good video. I wasn't aware of the Electronic Parking Brake complication until I tried pushing back the caliper like I usually would and nothing happened! I found a power supply to an old toy that put out 7 volts and that also did the trick. FYI for other V60 owners. There is no wear indicator squeaker tab on your brake pads. And if you hear grinding, you're down to the metal and will need to change rotors as well. The inside pad seems to wear much faster than the outside pad and you can't visually inspect it very easily!
@markbaker743
@markbaker743 2 жыл бұрын
There is a systemic problem with the EPB -- some hold the pads tight so they wear out quicker (my daughter's 2014 S60) and some do not (my wife's 2014 XCX60). All I can say is, monitor your inside pads any way you can and can before they wear out and score the rotor! Or, in my daughter's case, we change every 40,000 miles or so.

The 9V battery did not work for me... used my lawnmower 12V battery and it worked! Need enough juice for the motor to turn on. Was glad it was not a burned out motor or something else. Brakes were SO easy once that motor is retracted. Thank you so much for the good advice.

Well I tackled this job last night and the only snafu I ran into was a stuck wheel. I was rotating the tires at the same time and one of the front wheels was just stuck to the hub. Finally managed to free it and continue to the rear brake job. The brakes were very straight forward and the 9v battery trick worked like a charm!!!!! Thanks for showing this trick. Saved myself a small fortune by doing it on my own.

Thanks for the video. I will try this. I had my epb always retracting and does not engage. If I remove the epb motor and rotate the piston shaft, there was always 1 full turn to engage the rear brake. I will try to retract the piston all the way in the caliper this time.

Oh I have been putting anti seize on the bolts for decades and using a torque wrench with no issues. the other method is the manual turning of the piston with an allen key or torex key. Take out the two bolts holding the cap on then remove the cap and TURN the piston Clock Wise with the allen key. Then again push the piston back in with a brake tool or pliers.

Just did this on my 2011 XC70.. all went well until I got it all done and then got a 'Electronic Park Brake Service Required'. Only passenger side is working (can tell from listening whilst partner turns on and off)... Is there some way of forcing a recalibration? Should I clear the code using ODB Bluetooth and then disconnect epb once again, and wind it back to fully open and then try and calibrate again?
@prannermedia842
@prannermedia842 3 жыл бұрын
That’s never happened to me. I would try to clear the code and do it again. Try disconnecting the battery before you wind them back. However, due to the age of the car, if they are the original calipers, maybe there is some binding going on. Sliders well lubed? Check that the mechanical aspect is functioning perfectly. That could be the source of what you’ve experienced.
