Volvo S40 2.4L timing belt jumped timing

This video is sort of a how to on a volvo timing belt job. Now this car came in on a rollback and customer stated something (popped) and the car cut off. Although this thing ended up having bent valves this is still the steps from start to finish on how to change the timing belt on any L5 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 from many models and years. The belt itself works in but not limited to 1998-2013 c70, 07-13 c30, 2000-2011 s40, 01-09 s60, 98-07 v70, 03-07 xc70 and xc90 and much more. The local parts store can look it up to verify the parts you need. Use common sense and if you plan to do this yourself make sure you have an understanding on how everything mentioned in this video works. Do not try this yourself you you're not confident in your abilty.

@@blantondynamics not at all. Looks easier than any other car I’ve owned. Someone totaled my Tesla and I needed a car and so far this $500 Volvo has been a life saver. Easy to work on too.

How did you move each of the cams independently to correct the timing? I just did a rebuild (I'm no mechanic and it was my first time) on my son's 2005 S40. I replaced the timing belt, accessory belts, water pump and tensioner pulley. I checked the timing marks and I THOUGHT I had them right but it won't fire. It will crank and crank and crank without firing. Is there a way to rotate a cam independently if one is off by a tooth or two?

Yes you can rotate them separately

There should be a place on the cams where you can put a wrench.

put mark on cam crank poulie and belt before remove and put mark on new belt

When you pulled the crank pulley at the bottom, was the engine at TDC? To me, it looked like you pulled the crank pulley *without* setting the engine to TDC, then just put the pulley back on the mark. 😳

I'm curious why you weren't able to diagnose bent valves. Do you just not do that type of job?

Mainly because my compression gauge was Busted and the replacement was on back order. And so the customer wanted to do the timing belt because it had only jumped a few teeth.

did the belt snap while you were driving? I have the s40 T5 , my belt broke the other day while driving but so far I did not hear anything from the mechanic yet about the cylinder heads busted . Lucky for me, i was not driving fast, the car came to a complete stop right away but I pray i did not damage a piston or cylinder head but since its at the shop, they almost done, I am sure he would have told me by now if some serious damage occurred. Its an interference engine but does not mean all situations are always the same right? What do you think?

No this belt didn't snap at all it just stretched to the point where it jumped a few teeth. It was enough to bend the valves. Which yes could have been fcat. By removing the head, buying new valves, machining the head, getting the new gaskets and seals and putting it all back together but at that point would have cost the price of another used car. This car had pretty high miles I believe was 205 or maybe 220 but can't remember now. They didn't want to put that kind of money into it.

@@sixraysproductions5105 being interference engine I'd say it has bent valves but I've also seen them not get bent when the belt breaks so I'll cross my fingers for you too. 🤞

Have you heard back? Happened to my S40 T5, too and I believe valves are bent because it won't crank. Got a quote for at least 6 grand to fix it. Trying to decide whether to sell or part the car out or attempt to fix it myself just for the learning experience.

OMG. You did not time that right. You needed a cam holder and to take the valve cover off.. if it jumped time it's off everywhere. Also if it sounded like that before you did the belt. You knew it had no compression. There are timing marks on the other side of the pulleys as well. You didn't top dead center cylinder 1 and then time it correctly.

Ya i agree with you. Junk!!! I have a v50 that skipped timing belt because the AC belt went and wrapped around the crank pulley. What a piece of crap!!!

Yes and that's why I'd never ever own one and normally tell customers once they start to go down its best to get rid of it.
