Volvo S40 BTCC Super Touring Car w/ 2.0L N/A 5-Cylinder Engine: Intake Sound & Accelerations!

This video is about one of the iconic super touring cars of the late 90s when the Class 2 category was at its peak. These regulation were defined by the FIA for national touring car racing in 1993 and it was based on the "2 litre Touring Car Formula" created for the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in 1990. The Volvo S40 was one of the weapon built and developed by TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) for the 1997-1999 British Touring Car Championship replacing the Volvo 850 Estate and later being used in the Swedish Championship (STCC) for 3 consecutive years. Rickard Rydell managed to win the 1998 BTCC title behind the wheel of this S40. The car is powered by a 2-litre, naturally-aspirated 5-cylinders engine, with individual throttle bodies, which was able to produce up to 290 bhp (around 320 during the final STCC seasons) and rev up to 8,500 rpm. The minimum weight of the car was set at 975 kg. Enjoy it!

Yeah probably my favourite game ever, something about it felt so realistic when I was a kid. The fact the Renaults always pulled ahead by miles it felt like such an achievement to catch them. And if you were back with the Peugeots you knew you had fucked up😂

Those where the days, and Volvo spent a fortune by any standards to try and get that engine to it's competitors level, but actually ended up getting ahead of them. The "stock" racing classes can quickly become extremely expensive when they have to work around the rules. Besides BTCC and STCC, they also raced the S40 at Bathurst in Australia 1998 (both whole race and short clips on KZbin) and Rickard Rydell drove the wheels of it, as usual.

Yep, I remember reading an article in was it in Racecar engineering where they explained how the TWR guys ended up turning a 300£ stock cylinder head into a cylinder head that gave something like 30hp power increase and costing around 15 000£ a piece.

@@dudigi Yes they were not allowed to weld the factory heads, so they cut them apart and used screws to hold the new pieces together. An engineering accomplishment beyond anything remotely sensible, they were spending F1 kind of money by some accounts.

BTCC was magical during this time. The starting field and the drivers were top class and the stands were full. My friend and I sat at home in Sweden and watched it on TV and cheered on Volvo. Really miss that time.

The S40 Super Touring is one of the most victorious STCC cars in the hands of Cyan Racing with a total of 22 victories during its five years in the Swedish championship. The car weighed in at only 975 kg and had close to 320 hp from its naturally aspirated five-cylinder Volvo engine that was equipped with an X-trac 6-speed sequential gearbox. In 1997 Volvo switch from 850 saloon to new model Volvo S40, at the end of year he (rikard Rydell) was fourth with 1 victory and 5 podium. In 1998, he finally won the BTCC title in a Volvo with 5 victories and 12 podium, beating Anthony Reid at the final meeting. He also won the 1998 Super Touring Bathurst 1000, sharing a Volvo S40 with Jim Richards. In 1999 he was again third behind the two Nissan Primera with 4 victories and 7 podium.

engine variety is something sadly missing from modern motorsport. the only sport that really has it nowadays is endurance racing but back in the 90s variety was everywhere. f1 cars and le mans cars with 8, 10 and 12 cylinders. btcc with 4, 5 and 6 cylinders. i really miss when you could tell what car was coming by the sound before you could see it.

Them p11 SR20DE primeras are no joke. I swapped one for my l200 pickup sight unseen. And I was like wtf have I done. Pulled up to meet the fella to do the swap seen it was lowered big exhaust and all that i was like err fml. Deals off. Took it for a little test drive, and instantly fell in love with the primera. That sr20 was silky smooth, and all the extra nismo parts he put on it made it pretty damn rapid. I remember doing a quick 3rd pull against a civic type R and I smashed it. Got it off the clock in 3rd, still had heaps of revs to go, mine reved out to 9,200rpm and the intake sounded wicked as! I regret getting rid of that car. Was the rarer red top version too.

I painted the rocker cover ford imperial blue. Pimpers are rare now. Gave £500 for mine in 2008. Can't find em now and if you do you're looking at up to 5k.
