Don't be fooled by modest looking Volvos, especially this S40, because they're packed with all sorts of safety features that are just starting to be included in mainstream car brands.

*2008 S40 T5* 110k miles (177k km) in 2020 Favorite car in 45 years of driving, I love my car. That Turbo 5 cylinder has a meaty roar that matches what it's putting out, a V8 or V10 rumble. Leather comfort and Premium sound, the sub-woofers rattle the mirrors, kinda insane how loud it goes with studio headphone quality, and you feel it like at a concert. Yeah I love my car, pretty in black, grey interior perfect 12 years in. Get compliments all the time, just that styling is timeless

Love my 2012 Volvo S40 2.0, looks so different to the run of the mill similar priced cars everyone else owns. Very comfy, quiet, reliable and so economical for a 2.0 car.

I currently own a 2006 Volvo S40 2.4i. At first I was so excited to own one because they are some what considered a luxury car and it has a lot of power for being a small sedan. Then everything just started to go bad. My truck wiring harness broke and will not open now. The A/C compressor went out and is a 1200$ repair. The replacement parts are expensive and its hard to find shops that have all the right tools and scanners to work on it. Overall, I would not get this car again if I could go back. Better to go with something that is not so expensive to maintain. Hope this helps

You know, this was a good car in it's day, but my 2003 BMW 530i/Sports Pkg. is better in every respect. And I like and have owned 3 Volvos, so I'm not saying that as your typical, arrogant "Bimmer Owner". I'm saying this as a car enthusiast. First and foremost, RWD vs FWD (game over), Chassis dynamics, solidity of suspension, quality of interior materials, and just plain ol' driving excitement that BMW has in spades. Volvos are terrific cars in many respects, but unless you're driving an "R" version, are about as pulse-raising as watching paint dry.

lol Well, there's a reason (many, actually) that the E39 Era (1997-2003) of the 5-Series was at the time, quite literally the World's benchmark in a Sports Sedan. Volvo's are good cars, but not in the same league as BMW. No offense. Just talking as a car enthusiast who has owned, ( used ) Alfa Romeo, FIAT, Volvo, BMW and Porsche. And I swear to God, the steering feel on my 530i has me spoiled for life LOL. Cheers :)

1970borntorun I`m not a Volvo owner, I was just watching videos about small sporty sedans. I would only buy a RWD car with an LSD. I`m currently set to buy Alfa 156.

movement2contact Nice!! That is a wonderful car! If only they were here in the States! The last Alfa we had was the 164. Let's hope when Sergio Marchionne/Chrysler brings Alfa back to the US, we see great looking RWD sport sedans like how the Milano was configured. Take care!

Biggest pile of garbage I ever owned. 2002 s40 and its already falling apart, interior headliner side liner unglued, sensors out after only 120k miles, each one 100s of dollars. Car is made out of plastic don't waste your money on this piece of crap. It's designed to not last, and designed to make even small repairs and replace parts like a simple relay difficult. The only thing good about this car is the engine.

Doing some research might help you. The 2002 S40 was a rebadged Mitsubishi Carisma made at Nedcar. Besides the badges, just about the only thing Volvo about the first generation S40 were the engines which is probably why that was one of the few parts that wasn't rubbish. Also, you may complain about the quality of your "Volvo" (which was really a Mitsubishi) but compared to, say, ten year old Bimmers and Benzes the contemporary Volvos are relatively reliable. Sure, a few parts may be a bit loose by 200K miles, but at the end of the day the fact is that my dad has an '01 V70 with 211K mi and I have an '05 V50 with 152K mi and the two cars start up immediately every morning, burn nary a wisp of smoke, and require very little maintenance outside of oil changes and the preset maintenance intervals. Of course, you can't say they're as good to drive as a BMW but as simple commuter vehicles there's little that beats them in terms of comfort and especially safety.
