I have had a 2005 S40 for 14 years, and it has been the best car I've ever owned. It's a manual, and as such, I will continue to drive it for as long as I can. It's quick but comfortable, not very sporty but fun enough, and it never lets me down. Brilliant car.

Great simple and very informative video. Thank you. I hear clunking noise coming from under driver's side front like it is hitting at the acceleration pedal, but just once after I move off on low gear 1st, 2nd after 10-15 seconds. I've changed brake pads but didn't lubricate the sliding pins as was rushing so will recheck. Could be also the mounts. Also my rear drivers's side caliper is stuck as disc is rusted so probably will end up with changing it but first will check the sliding pins.

There is a multi complicated coolant hose on this series of vehicles that is prone to cracking, leaking coolant that will overheat your engine if you don’t keep a close eye on your coolant level. This can cause the timing belt to jump time and destroy your engine. The hose is located on the driver’s side underneath the intake and tbody area making it extremely difficult or impossible to see from the top. This hose should be replaced on vehicles with over 100k miles in my opinion. It is a cheap repair compared to buying an engine or a different vehicle.

theres no coolant low indicator except on xc90. the adapter for the pump up tester is usually wrong too so you end up holding the stupid thing on . the cheap chicom replacement tanks leak too. most of the leaks are on the upper hose that you cant see. they happen when the car is at running temp and if theyre on the ends of the coolant crossover like mine, they drip on to the header and vanish so you cant find them except for the puddle. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR COOLANT LEVEL WHEN YOU GET GAS or run your heat and if the heat doesnt work carry extra coolant (away from animals) and top it off. most leaks happen when it ten degrees out too.

I have a 2009 V50 that I bought recently, but basically the same as the S40. I had to replace the rear brake calipers when one didn't want to go in well when I replaced the brakes and was sticking when I put it back together. Also had a vibration in the front that turned out to be at least three things. The previous owner took it to a shop that didn't know what they were doing and I've been having to fix several things they fixed recently according to the carfax. They didn't grease the front brake caliper pins and I suspect that caused the brake rotor to warp. The tires were cupped. And even after those two were fixed, there was still a front end vibration. Ended up being both axles failing. Driver's side started making a lot of noise so I replaced it. But it was still vibrating because the passenger side was bad as well. Headliner is still up, but seems like the foam under may be failing as it's a bit softer than I'd expect it to be.
