Thanks very much for your informative video. I have a 2007 S40 with the rear section sagging and after seeing your video, I'm going to remove the whole hood lining and do the recover. I also have a 1998 first generation S40 with the same problem that I'm going to rectify soon.

Hi, thanks for your comment, here are some Tips for the removal stage: All sedans are either slowly carefully removed from the front passenger door, or rear drivers side door. Have seats all the way back and reclined, apply slight bow to the board to flex out, mainly to keep it away from dragging on any interior parts. If any breakages accur, you can apply small repairs and re strengthen using industrial cloth tape glues into place.

I did this last year on my V50. If I were to ever do it again, I would just clean the orange/brown glue off the headliner board and reinstall it (make spray it too). The board itself, once cleaned, doesn't actually look that bad on its own if you take care of not hurting it when you remove the glue. DON'T use any power tools. I found that a plastic brush and a ton of alcohol did the trick. (the alcohol was to dissolve the glue and was not an adult beverage). Most of the time it took was related to getting the old glue off.

the problem for some may be the year of the vehicle and possibly the market sold. the S40 in the USA market has a different center console, it has a "wave" waterfall like plastic garnish that makes the dimension between the upper corner of the passenger door some 12 cm smaller than the max width of the headliner panel. force it out, and it will fracture. to avoid that, the center console trim has to be removed. WORK. Or, if there is a glass chip- new windshield. Easy exchange then. the sunshade reline is novel, but there is a slight of hand between #76 adhesive and the spray pot adhesive used elsewhere. Applying the headliner material at the handholds to flow well was skipped. As was the removal /reattachment of the of the bonded on wiring. I think that is important to not mess up the side airbag deployment, the sunshade approach is a time saver but there are some steps left out.

Thanks for this awesome video! Our Skoda Octavia 2011 has a saggy sunroof lining and trying to figure out how best to fix. The material seems only about 2mm thick - is the sunroof lining usually different to the main headliner?

Factory sunroof shade panels sometimes have the same fabric, but the foam was removed prior to sticking it on. Usually you can get away with 2mm-4mm foam backing anyways

Definitely easier to remove headliners with front or rear windows out. However we learnt at motor trimming trade school to remove all headliners via front passenger door or rear passenger drivers side door. But definitely comes with practice

Hi there. Can you give any advice on thickness of the headliner material? Recently had our Volvo’s (c30, but sunroof looks the same as your video) headliner repaired at a repair shop, the headliner material is so thick that it’s hard to open the sunroof. And we just broke the plastic handle while trying to close it. They used the same headliner material for both the ceiling and the sunroof. Are they different thicknesses out there? Thank you!

Most foam backed headliner fabrics are around 3.5mm thick. Not sure what you received. Maybe carefully try spraying lubricant in the sunroof tracks and movement sections to help it slide. Or take it back under warranty and express your concerns with operation, most businesses should be willing to try to make customers happy I'd like to assume

Thank you so much for your help! We took it back not long after it was done and the shop installer said it’s just what they get from the manufacturer, and sunroofs that have that border trim around it (like ours) are sometimes tight after installation. The material is thick and felt-like. Much thicker than the OEM material. So thick, there is actually pilling on the sunroof center from it rubbing. But since the plastic handle thingy broke today, I will notify them and request a thinner material, like 1/8” (3.5mm or so). I hope they are receptive. Thank you again.

It was a Flat knit style headliner fabric. Colour would of been a light grey, which can be usually sold as Titanium, Silver, Cappuccino, Grey, Oak.

How many yards/meters of headliner do you think an S40 like this needs to do the roof and the front+rear pillars? Considering doing this myself but with a different textiles. I know the oem S40 headliner fabric 1/8" or 3mm.. but if I go to 5/32" or 4mm (maybe closer to 4.2mm for some wiggle room), do you think it'll cause issues with the sunroof? I've heard common headliners sizes like 1/4" or larger could damage the sunroof but haven't found anything on what the tolerances are, if any.. only ppl just suggesting 1/8" liners.

We remove all our sedan roof boards out either the front passenger door or rear drivers door with the two front seats fully reclined back. I believe the 02 S40 will be fine but we just don't many of the Volvo makes to suggest accurate information for each particular year model. Note: that some boards are thicker than others making it harder to flex out the door, and some boards are super fragile making it a risk in breaking parts. Also the width of the board and width of the opening to get the board out all plays a role in how difficult the job will be.

Thanks for your comment, The Volvo C30 I haven't worked on yet but I do know Volvo's are difficult roof liners to work on, same goes for Volkswagen headliners, they are nothing like easy falcons and Commodores. So take your time, plenty of patience is needed for these usually. Hopefully the c30 is an easier job.

@@MrAlexandreminot disconnecting the battery doesn't hurt, so worth doing. We are not concerned with airbags unless the car has been in an accident or something warrants a concern. And majority of the time we remove the least amount of plastics/pillars required to drop down the headliner board.

Thanks for your comment, We don't touch the airbags during any headliner repairs, they just all stay exactly where they are. But disconnecting the battery is ideal. Just keep in mind with it disconnected during the reinstall stage make sure you don't screw into any wires as that will makes the lights not work when you connect the battery at the end. Not required usually, I like to keep it connected so I know if a wire gets hit by a screw or plug, plastics etc and earth's the system.

We only replace with new because Fabric may only be sagging in a few places & still neat, but if it previously hasn't been recovered, Adding glue to the existing factory material wont work, looks messy, it will leave a visable stain due to glue hitting raw fabric. Over time the foam backing on the fabric crumbles away making it un-stick & causing the fabric to fall down. To fix the sagging issue professionally, the Foam/Fabric needs to be replaced. Here is a video we did explaining in more detail why we never reuse the old fabric/foam, & don't do partial fixes. Well, I must say that I don't know how the heck you got that headlining out of the car. You were sitting on the seat and you managed to get it out over your knees. I tried every possible way and could only get it out by bending the front section in half where the sunroof control aperture is and it cracked right there. Another part of the lining at the back also got cracked when being bent. I can repair this by gluing thin plywood on the back to strengthen it, but how do I get the board back in without bending or cracking it again? What's the secret, please tell me.

The video was informative to me. Maybe you could edit the commercials though. The first commercials were 3:30 seconds long, and the second break was an overwhelming 40 minute commercial, singular. I usually watch the commercials to support KZbin'ers such as yourself, but I was unable to in this case, because 43 minutes of commercials for a 9 minute video, was or is unreasonable in my opinion. The rest of the wire is tucked up in the headliner. You have to give it a gentle tug and the connectors will come right out. There's maybe about 6 inches of wire before the connector after the visor.

Hey, thanks for your comment 👍 Its a great question, one that we get asked about frequently. So We never reuse the old fabric/foam. And dont offer that service. Just full Replacement with new foam/fabric and new glue. If it was previously recovered in new material, then repair can be accomplished.
